For almost six weeks now, Munich&#039;s Isarvorstadt and Ludwigvorstadt districts have boasted a new culinary hotspot. Where Coco de Mer was located just a few months ago, the &quot;avva Restaurant and Wine Shop&quot; now awaits you in all its renewed glory. I visited the establishment, chatted with the incredibly charming owner, Preshika Wright, about the restaurant&#039;s origins, philosophy, and cuisine, and of course, sampled the offerings. The restaurant focuses on South African wines and modern European cuisine with strong South African influences. The dishes are inspired by South African flavors, spices, and ingredients, presented with a modern twist. This results in an ideal and truly unique blend of new components and familiar flavors. It&#039;s divided into a well-stocked wine shop specializing in South African wines, a separate seating area with a large round table for private groups, and a spacious restaurant area with approximately 15 tables for two and four people. The premises are cozy and inviting. You can get the best impression by looking at the photo gallery below: subtle lighting, original parquet floors, deep orange walls and high ceilings, elegantly set light wood tables with fresh flowers, fully stocked wine racks, creative lamps, and personal photographs on the walls in the bar area. I felt comfortable immediately upon entering on my first visit. To begin, we were served a crisp 2009 Avondale and Armilla as an aperitif, along with a basket containing two kinds of homemade bread \u2013 a pan-fried &quot;vetkoek&quot; bread and a white bread baked by the chef. The first course was a delicious cauliflower soup with a hint of nougat, served in a shallow metal plate, accompanied by pheasant breast and cinnamon wafers. A very successful start. I also appreciated the contrast between the elegant presentation and the simple tableware. The next course, served on a round, quartered tile, was a marinated mackerel prepared escabeche-style with brioche and bacon croutons, capers, tarragon, and cinnamon potatoes. What I particularly liked here, besides the personal appearance of chef Luke Rogers at the table, was that the individual components of the dish were clearly discernible and at the same time harmonized perfectly as a flavor combination in the mouth.<\/p>\n<p>The third course was accompanied by a South African white wine from the Arendsig winery (Arendsig, Site Specific, 2013, Inspirational Batch 3). Arendsig&#039;s Inspiration Batch wines all come from vineyards with unique soil, a perfect climate, and an ideal location. Natural yeast, not enzymes, is used during fermentation, and the wine is aged in neutral vessels to preserve its unique character. The wine was served with mussels in small pots, topped with gremolata and piri-piri (a specific type of chili pepper). The mussels are a specialty at the avva restaurant and are usually served in large pots (1 kilo for 2 people, normally \u20ac17 per person). I highly recommend ordering them. They are accompanied by fresh &quot;pot bread&quot; in a separate pot (a typical African bread traditionally baked in old tin cans). (Saign\u00e9e literally means &quot;bloodletting&quot; and refers to a time-honored method for making ros\u00e9 wine, in which 10-201 tbsp of the must is drawn off without pressing and then fermented further to produce ros\u00e9 wine.) If you&#039;re ever at avva, you should definitely ask about the ros\u00e9 wine and, in my opinion, generally get a wine recommendation for each course \u2013 that way you&#039;ll get even more out of your meal. I certainly did this for my fourth and next course: wild boar bobotie (a kind of &quot;meatloaf&quot; from South Africa) with banana cream and puffed rice. A glass of red wine was served with it, which was also my clear favorite of the evening: a 2015 South African Wind and Sea Pinot Noir from Newton Johnson. If you like red wine, you&#039;ll love this robust and intense red. The meat was incredibly tender, and combined with the lentils and mushrooms, it was a culinary triumph. Last but not least \u2013 as we all know, there&#039;s always room for more: dessert. My companion and I were each served two different options. One was a milk tart with coconut curry ice cream and pistachios (regular size \u20ac9), and the other was a fig tarte tartin with cardamom ice cream. We also had an espresso macchiato and a cappuccino. A very sweet, but also very successful, ending to the meal. Even the dessert reflected the restaurant&#039;s concept: familiar tastes paired with new flavors, such as the coconut curry ice cream.<\/p>\n<p>(It&#039;s best to look at the pictures of the individual dishes.
