Some time ago, my companion and I had dinner at Spezlwirtschaft, a restaurant in Munich's city center. Several people had recommended it to me beforehand. The entrance is located in a narrow alley, leading up a relatively old and unremarkable staircase, behind a simple door with a white "Spezlwirtschaft" sign \u2013 similar to a cellar door \u2013 and even after entering, it exudes little ambiance or cozy atmosphere: simple wooden tables and chairs, dormer windows, and basic light bulb lamps or huge, black lampshades over the tables.<\/p>\n

We hadn't made a reservation and were given a table for two at a large round table next to the simple wooden bar with large, black, round lamps. Overall, the restaurant is very basic, sparsely furnished, and somewhere between rustic Bavarian and simply, even somewhat uninspired. Opposite the bar are about three or four smaller tables for two to four people, very basic without much decoration, fuss, tablecloths, or frills. Two doors lead directly from the main room into the other, much larger dining room with numerous wooden tables, roughly L-shaped in layout. All the tables were occupied, and some people had to leave hungry due to lack of space.<\/p>\n

The Menus<\/a> We received our food immediately after being seated. I chose a salad (\u20ac10.80), and my companion opted for K\u00e4sesp\u00e4tzle (\u20ac9.80). We ordered our drinks beforehand. The Spezi (\u20ac3.80) and the Diet Coke (\u20ac2.50\/0.2l) were served very quickly.<\/p>\n

Otherwise, the menu doesn't offer a huge selection, but it's a good mix, providing plenty of choice \u2013 for example, Wiener Schnitzel with fries and cranberries with a small salad for \u20ac16.90, suckling pig loin with spinach and potatoes for \u20ac14.90, Tripoline with green asparagus, tomatoes, and Parmesan with white wine sauce for \u20ac11.80 or with basil-almond pesto for \u20ac9.80, to name just a few options. Additionally, you can order "Rahmfleckerl" (classic with sour cream, bacon, and spring onions, or cheese) for \u20ac4.50, snacks, and desserts (chocolate cake with a molten center or sour cream pancakes with a forest berry cream cheese filling, both for \u20ac5.80). And of course, the K\u00e4sspatzen (cheese spaetzle), which we ordered, or various salads. I chose the vegetable pesto salad with marinated vegetables and sprouts on a bed of colorful mixed leaves with a delicious dressing. It was very tasty, served in a very deep bowl, and, along with the bread that was served with it, quite filling. My companion's K\u00e4sesp\u00e4tzle (cheese spaetzle) was also delicious, very cheesy, but flavorful \u2013 I couldn't quite finish the portion, but it was very generous. We paid \u20ac29 including tip for two main courses and two drinks \u2013 quite reasonable for Munich city center prices; the quality of the food matches the price and is even better than one might expect from the restaurant's initial appearance.<\/p>\n

The staff \u2013 we had a young waitress \u2013 were very friendly and attentive. We were served promptly, our food arrived quickly, and as mentioned, the prices were reasonable. If you'd like to sit for a while and chat comfortably, I recommend making a reservation in the back area. While it also has bare walls and simple seating, it's a bit quieter and more private than the front. Card payments are accepted at Spezlwirtschaft.<\/p>\n

Opening hours are Monday to Sunday from 5:30 pm to 1:00 am. Give it a try; you can't go wrong with the food, and it's not uncomfortable either. As always: with the right company, even the smallest place can be a good spot. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

I'll be back:<\/strong>\u00a0Basically yes, because there's really nothing against it. But no emphasis should be placed on ambiance or a special atmosphere.<\/p>\n
