Recently, my companion and I ate at the Gasthof zur Post in Unterhaching. Many thanks for the tip, Vanessa! We drove there, as the only public transport option is via a nearby S-Bahn station (Unterhaching). If you're coming by car, parking isn't a problem.<\/p>\n

As the restaurant's name suggests, the Gasthof zur Post is an old, simply furnished, Bavarian restaurant. We were greeted immediately upon entering by a friendly waiter who informed us that we could choose any available table in the spacious dining room.<\/p>\n

In my opinion, the restaurant's decor is a bit too basic and almost "uninviting": very simple, light-colored wooden furniture, red placemats, blue bench cushions thrown into the corner of the otherwise bare wooden benches, a few Easter decorations on the windowsills, daffodils on the tables, and overall few details to create a cozy atmosphere. Furthermore, the back of the huge restaurant was dark, the lights were off, and service was limited to the front area \u2013 with only three of the approximately 35 occupied tables \u2013 making it feel a bit like being in a giant dining hall \u2013 like a restaurant at a rest stop or a sports bar.<\/p>\n

Well\u2026 Bavarian ambiance aside, there was absolutely nothing to criticize about the service, friendliness, or food until we left the restaurant. The menus were handed to us immediately after we were seated. There were also special offers on the tables, valid only for Easter. The standard menus offer a good mix of Bavarian cuisine. Very meat-heavy, but there are also options for vegetarians, such as K\u00e4sesp\u00e4tzle (for \u20ac7.90) or creamed mushrooms with bread dumplings (for \u20ac9.90). In the end, we opted for pike-perch fillet on a bed of spinach with parsley potatoes, and my companion ordered the Cordon Bleu with fried potatoes \u2013 both for \u20ac14.50 each. The food arrived relatively quickly, and the drinks we ordered \u2013 a lively, dry Chardonnay from France (0.2l for \u20ac4.10) and a Pinot Grigio Verona, Italy, IGT della Provincia de Verona (0.2l, also \u20ac4.10) \u2013 also arrived promptly. I specifically ordered my fish cooked all the way through because I don't like it slimy, and this request was honored. The fish was delicious, not too fishy (which I also don't like), and the accompanying potatoes were tasty, soft, and a delight with a little extra salt. My companion's meat was also excellent, not tough, and perfectly proportioned and breaded. The accompanying fried potatoes were also edible and sufficient, so the main courses left us quite satisfied. My friend Vanessa, who recommended the place, also told me that the J\u00e4gerschnitzel (hunter's schnitzel) is very good here \u2013 so if you ever come, you could try it.<\/p>\n

I had originally planned to order the cauliflower soup from the menu as a starter. However, my companion announced while we were ordering that she wanted the Kaiserschmarrn for dessert. So I skipped the soup and \u2013 which turned out to be a good decision \u2013 joined in the Kaiserschmarrn. It was served relatively quickly after we ordered, which isn't always the case with Kaiserschmarrn, and our mouths were already watering just at the sight of the large plate and the small bowl of applesauce. The Kaiserschmarrn was absolutely delicious and left nothing to be desired. The waiter was also kind enough to check with the kitchen if a half portion was available \u2013 it was, but only for one euro less \u2013 so we opted for the large portion for \u20ac6.90. The Kaiserschmarrn tasted excellent. There was nothing to criticize, and it had the perfect consistency. Kaiserschmarrn is truly a science unto itself, and everyone defines "good" differently \u2013 the Gasthof zur Post gets it right.<\/p>\n

For those who don't like fish or sweets and prefer meat, there's roast pork in dark beer sauce with dumplings and coleslaw for \u20ac8.90, pork knuckle with crackling in dark beer sauce and potato dumplings for \u20ac9.90, hunter's schnitzel (pork) with mushroom cream sauce and homemade spaetzle for \u20ac10.90, roast beef with onions (beef sirloin) with fried potatoes, fried onions, and gravy for \u20ac13.90, a fillet platter with two fillets (pork and beef) with homemade spaetzle and mushroom cream sauce for \u20ac14.20, or veal Wiener Schnitzel with fries and salad for \u20ac13.90. Soup of the day is available for \u20ac3.80, and there are also small dishes under \u20ac4 on the menu (two white sausages).<\/p>\n

Overall, it's a typical Bavarian restaurant with a fitting menu, very friendly and attentive staff, relatively reasonable prices, and\u2014to put it kindly\u2014room for improvement in terms of ambiance. The restaurant's focus is clearly on good food\u2014which it delivers\u2014so a cozy atmosphere might not be its top priority. We were very satisfied, and it's definitely worth the trip for good fish or meat dishes\u2014especially if you want to avoid the typical big-city tourist crowds found in Bavarian restaurants in the city center.<\/p>\n

We paid \u20ac52 including tip for two glasses of wine, two main courses \u2013 meat and fish \u2013 and a generous dessert. Considering that, the price was reasonable and it was worth the money. Furthermore, every Monday from 6 pm \u2013 except on public holidays \u2013 we offer a quarter of oven-fresh roast duck with dumplings and red cabbage for only \u20ac7.90. Try the inn, you'll love it.<\/p>\n
