Some time ago, my companion and I spent a weekend at the Gasthof Oberbr\u00e4u in Holzkirchen. The Oberbr\u00e4u is an Austrian-Bavarian restaurant with excellent cuisine from these regions. The entire menu is displayed in a large glass case outside the entrance. The Oberbr\u00e4u building is enormous, and upon entering, we weren't initially sure if it was open, as no other tables in the vast dining room were occupied. However, after a short while, the friendly server noticed us and offered us a table of our choice. We opted for a corner table in the still-empty room. It seemed a bit strange to me that it was completely empty at 6:00 PM on a Sunday.<\/p>\n

We hadn't even taken off our jackets, let alone sat down, when we were asked what we wanted to drink. This happens to me all the time in restaurants, and I always find it a bit too pushy. Anyway\u2026 The food and drink menus were handed to us without much of a wait, and we got down to ordering. The Oberbr\u00e4u offers a good mix of dishes. I opted for a mixed salad with two large rounds of goat cheese and three slices of garlic bread. The salad dressing was excellent. Often, in more rustic restaurants, the salads are quite simple and plain, as the focus is on hearty dishes \u2013 but in this case, I was very satisfied. I didn't eat the garlic bread, but there was absolutely nothing to complain about with my meal for a reasonable \u20ac11.90. My companion chose Viennese onion roast beef for \u20ac15.80 with green beans and baked potatoes \u2013 also a fairly generous portion. The small potatoes were delicious, the meat was plentiful, still slightly medium-rare, and also very good, perfectly complementing the delicious beans. To drink, we chose a Diet Coke (0.3l for \u20ac2.80) and a large Spezi (a German soft drink) for \u20ac3.20.<\/p>\n

Those who don't fancy goat cheese or roast beef with onions can choose from grilled sea bream fillet (\u20ac15.90), ribbon pasta in wild garlic pesto with strips of veal, white and green asparagus, and Parmesan (\u20ac12.20), Viennese boiled beef (\u20ac12.60), crispy fried chicken with potato and lamb's lettuce salad and fried parsley (\u20ac11.80), Wiener Schnitzel (\u20ac15.40), medallions of venison in cherry and pepper sauce (\u20ac18.90), grilled rib-eye steak (250g for \u20ac16.80), or many other dishes. Vegetarians are somewhat limited, as they are limited to either the goat cheese salad or wild garlic dumplings on a bed of vegetables with salad (\u20ac11.80). Meat lovers, however, will find plenty of options and a good mix on the menu.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of desserts. Kaiserschmarrn \u2013 small for \u20ac4.90 or, for those with a bigger appetite, large for \u20ac8.30, apple fritters for \u20ac5.40, ice cream dumplings with apricot filling for \u20ac6.20, or marinated strawberries for \u20ac6.10. We skipped dessert during our stay, but I would definitely come back to try one.<\/p>\n

The interior is typically Bavarian. Dark furniture, a fireplace in the dining room, checkered curtains, small vases on the tables, cushions in the corners, a sturdy Bavarian wardrobe, and many other playful details all contribute to a pleasant and cozy atmosphere. In the courtyard, there's a terrace with plenty of seating under large, white umbrellas, perfect for enjoying snacks and other delicacies. My companion, however, seems to recall that the sun is rather scarce there.<\/p>\n

Although our food took a while to arrive after we ordered it \u2013 my companion's impression was different \u2013 it was served by another exceptionally friendly waitress with a standard basket containing two pretzels. The wait was worthwhile; the prices were reasonable and the service was excellent. Even the fact that the restaurant, divided into two rooms \u2013 a large dining room where we sat and a room more like a pub with a regulars' table \u2013 remained almost completely empty until the end of our visit did little to detract from the cozy and comfortable atmosphere.<\/p>\n

In the basement, where the very clean restrooms are also located, there's a bar. You can get an idea of what it looks like from the photos. Of course, it was closed and unmanned at the time, but it looked quite cozy. My companion has also been to the bar when it's full and said it's quite nice there in the evening. (Note the double entendre!) \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Overall, there was nothing to complain about, except perhaps that the food took a little long in my opinion, which was possibly just because we were the first ones there and the oven had to heat up first. :-)<\/p>\n

If you have a car \u2013 or like to take the S-Bahn (Holzkirchen station) \u2013 you can certainly try the restaurant; in that case, you probably don't need a reservation. Card payments are accepted at Oberbr\u00e4u. It's open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to midnight. We paid \u20ac36 including tip for two main courses and two non-alcoholic drinks.<\/p>\n

The restaurant "Papst," also located in Holzkirchen near the train station, is run by the same owner \u2013 I'll definitely try it out too. \ud83d\ude42 So I would definitely recommend Oberbr\u00e4u. It's even more fun with the right company, as always. Summer's coming, so you've got to get out there! \ud83d\ude09 Have fun!.<\/p>\n
