Recently, my companion and I had dinner at Rigoletto. We actually stumbled upon it quite by chance, as we had a voucher for a main course at this restaurant, spontaneously made a reservation by phone, and drove there. The restaurant is somewhat secluded in the middle of a residential area and appears rather inconspicuous and isolated. If you didn't know that a restaurant \u2013 or as it calls itself, a "dining caf\u00e9" \u2013 was located there, you wouldn't find it. Admittedly, it's not exactly inviting \u2013 even from the outside \u2013 and we probably would have left without the voucher. Upon entering, the very simple, light-colored furniture, the basic and eclectic interior, and the rather basic ambiance immediately catch the eye. The restaurant is very long and narrow, with tables scattered throughout, including along the bar in the center of the room, behind which the kitchen is located. The walls are painted orange, the floor is dark, and there's a rather overly elegant gold lamp that stretches across the entire width of the restaurant, along with a few pictures on the walls. Since we're not entirely free of prejudice, we were expecting rather mediocre to "too simple" food. Only two other tables were occupied: one by a large group of women who eyed us strangely as we registered, and the other by an older gentleman with a laptop. Otherwise, the restaurant remained empty the entire time, and there were only two other couples sitting on the terrace.<\/p>\n

Our waiter brought us the menus as soon as we were seated at a table for four near the window and the exit to the spacious, furnished terrace. One of the first things I noticed was that the small cauliflower cream soup cost \u20ac3.90 on the menu, but \u20ac4.90 on the sign above the kitchen counter. A large portion cost \u20ac5.60 \u2013 which is what we opted for to share. It took a very long time for the soup to arrive, mainly because the restaurant was practically empty. When the bowl was finally placed in front of us with two spoons, we were pleasantly surprised. A good portion, very tasty \u2013 and the bread we ordered afterward was also quite good. It could have used a little more salt, but it was just right and very flavorful. For our main courses, we chose from the diverse selection. I ultimately decided on the Rigoletto salad with goat cheese, honey, and thyme for \u20ac11.50. My companion opted for the cordon bleu with potato salad for \u20ac13.50. Considering the price, the dishes were reasonably priced, and after the empty appetizer plate was cleared and we waited a bit longer, we were quite satisfied. The lettuce leaves in my salad were a bit too large, and I had to chop everything into bite-sized pieces myself, but the goat cheese medallion was enormous, very tasty, and tasted quite good with the salad and the well-balanced dressing. The goat cheese was served on half a toasted bread roll \u2013 I left this because I didn't think it went well with the salad \u2013 but it looked fine and was nicely crispy. My companion's meat was a bit borderline breaded. It was quite dark and a little too hard, but still edible. The meat itself wasn't tough, but rather soft and tender. The potato salad was fresh, typically Bavarian, and overall a success. For \u20ac13.50, one could argue whether the portion was large enough \u2013 we didn't eat in the city center \u2013 but there was really nothing to complain about with either main course and we had expected "worse".<\/p>\n

For drinks, we ordered two Hugo cocktails for \u20ac4.90 each. Very reasonably priced for Hugo, and the portions were quite generous. The glasses were full \u2013 well over 0.2 liters \u2013 and the mix was delicious. No complaints there. Don't like goat cheese or Cordon Bleu? Then perhaps the various Thai curries (turkey, organic chicken, or vegetarian) for \u20ac12.90, \u20ac15.50, or \u20ac10.90 will appeal to you. They also offer baked Camembert for \u20ac6.90 and Wiener Schnitzel with fries for \u20ac11.90. For children, there are children's schnitzel, fish fingers, a crudit\u00e9s platter, or pasta with tomato sauce for between \u20ac3.90 and \u20ac5.90. All relatively simple dishes, but as I said, the taste was excellent. Cakes are also available. For example, hot apple strudel with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream for \u20ac5.50, organic shortbread cookies, nut slices, butter croissants, quark pastries, or cakes and tarts from the counter \u2013 priced between \u20ac2.90 and \u20ac5.50 for the apple strudel. So, perfectly reasonable. In the adjacent organic bakery, you can also find fresh rolls, croissants, bread, newspapers, etc., starting at 6:30 a.m. (8:00 a.m. on Sundays and public holidays).<\/p>\n

In addition, breakfast is offered seven days a week, with one free refill of any hot drinks ordered \u2013 a rather rare find. For example, you can order two bread rolls with jam, honey, or Nutella for \u20ac3.50; a pretzel stick, a bread roll with butter, ham, salami, or a cheese platter, and a glass of tomato juice for \u20ac6.50; two bread rolls and a pretzel with a small cheese platter, ham and salami, and jam for \u20ac7.90; or organic muesli with fresh fruit and milk, jam, honey, a small cheese platter, butter, a whole-grain roll, and a glass of orange juice for \u20ac8.90. Numerous extras are also available from \u20ac0.50 to \u20ac5.90, such as an organic egg, natural yogurt, a croissant, etc. I haven't tried them yet \u2013 they sound simple, but perhaps tasty and reasonably priced. We paid \u20ac43 including tip (minus one main course, which you obviously wouldn't have to pay). Not exactly cheap, and considering the restaurant's somewhat remote location and lack of inviting atmosphere, it felt a bit pricey. On top of that, while our waiter was friendly, he wasn't attentive. As mentioned, our soup took a very long time, and the main courses weren't served until two minutes after the appetizers \u2013 we were still finishing our soup! Once we'd finished, and our main courses had been kept warm, it took even longer for them to arrive. Our waiter's colleague cleared the empty plates because he was busy distributing napkins. So, the service was rather disorganized, and we were probably lucky it wasn't too busy.<\/p>\n

If you don't place too much importance on a fancy atmosphere and don't need a lot of fuss, are happy with simple fare, can tolerate somewhat slow service, and happen to be in the area, I wouldn't discourage you from visiting. It's definitely not suitable for a long evening in a chic setting. If you want good food at fair prices, then in my opinion, you can give it a try. But don't be put off when you walk in.
