The Brezelina shop at Stachus

Brezelina at Karlsplatz I'm often on the go and rarely, if ever, eat at home. The only exceptions are when I'm trying out a new product while cooking at home or having something delivered to my door for my delivery service review series. But sitting down at a table in a different restaurant every time I get hungry – I simply don't have the time. That's not so bad, though, because it means I can always grab a quick snack at one of the many places in Munich that offer a quick bite to go.

One of my top spots for a quick and satisfying meal is Brezelina. Brezelina has been in Munich for seven years, and since October 2015, in addition to its location at Karlsplatz Stachus, it also has a branch at Marienplatz. The name says it all: Brezelina makes pretzels. Specifically, freshly baked pretzels daily with a wide variety of toppings. They also offer various types of braided pretzels and... Plain croissants, croissants with cheese and ham or Nutella, as well as cheese-topped pretzels are offered. For those who prefer a hot meal on the go, Brezelina is the place to go. In addition to their delicious pretzels, they also sell freshly prepared mashed potatoes in convenient pots with various toppings. I've now taken a closer look at Brezelina, met with the friendly managing director Josa Gräber, and want to tell you about it.

Pretzels with 11 different toppings

What's available at Brezelina?

At Brezelina on Stachus, you can choose from eleven different pretzel toppings. In addition, there's an eleventh pretzel variety whose toppings are "replaced" and recreated every two months. Pretzel braids are available for purchase, with or without toppings. Currently, you can choose between pretzels with "Honey Mustard," "Chives," "Cress," "Soft Cheese," "Obatzda," "Turkey Curry," "Emmentaler," "Leberkäse," "Ham" (South Tyrolean ham), "Butter," or "Arugula." The 12th pretzel variety, or rather the current "highlight" pretzel, is the "Liverwurst Pretzel.".

My personal favorite, besides the classic buttered or plain pretzel, is the pretzel with Leberkäse (a type of meatloaf) or hummus. Delicious, I tell you! One thing all the pretzels have in common, by the way, is that they're nice and soft, not baked too crispy, but still have the perfect bite. Plus, they're all generously spread with toppings covering the entire surface. Don't you ever find that? You often buy sandwiches, rolls, and snacks to go in Munich, and either the first or last bite tastes dry because there's not enough topping. Not so with Brezelina, which, by the way, brings us to the "idea behind it.".

History, prices and more

Why topped pretzels, and how did it all come about? Quite simply, the founders of Brezelina felt there was a lack of variety. Hundreds of bakeries offered countless different rolls and breads with various toppings. But the good old pretzel was always just plain or with butter. "There has to be a better way!" thought the creators of Brezelina seven years ago, and today they run Munich's only and best topped pretzel shop, "Brezelina." Incidentally, they start baking, splitting, and freshly topping German pretzels, croissants, and braided loaves as early as 5:00 a.m. And they continue this process all day until closing time at 8:00 p.m. So everything is always fresh. You can't really miss this little shop at Stachus, because the basement level of Stachus is constantly filled with the aroma of fresh pretzels. An additional advantage of Brezelina pretzels: Due to the dough composition, the consistency of the pretzel remains nice and fluffy, the pretzel stays soft for longer and can even be enjoyed the following day if necessary.

Brezelina's blank pretzels. Don't they look great?

And the next positive aspect: the prices. Butter pretzels cost €1.20, toasted pretzels €1.60, and filled pretzels start at €1.80 to €2.90. Plus, these pretzels are a bit more filling than a regular pretzel, since they're made with 110 grams of dough (not the 80 grams most pretzels have). Did you know or notice that? 🙂 Filling braided pretzels with toppings are available for €3.20 to €4.20; plain croissants are €1.40, with Nutella €1.95, or with cooked ham and cheese €2.20. Cappuccino, latte macchiato, café au lait, or even black coffee (from Alfredo) are sold here for €1.50. If that's still too much for you, I'm afraid I can't help you any further.

Brezelina's mashed potatoes

A very popular offer at Brezelina is the combination of "mashed potatoes with two toppings of your choice and a soft drink" for a reasonable €4.50. I've stopped by many times myself – even on cold days – and grabbed some mashed potatoes. A total of nine different toppings are offered at Stachus (Emmental cheese, cucumber, Mediterranean, pesto Genovese, fried onions, arugula, sour cream, ham, chives). (At Marienplatz, there are two additional toppings: pulled beef and Sicilian sauce). The mashed potatoes themselves can, of course, also be ordered plain for €2.90 including a topping. My favorite is the combination of pickles, sour cream, and fried onions. Give it a try! 🙂 Once you've decided on your toppings, you can watch as freshly cooked potatoes are enriched with milk, butter, and nutmeg and then freshly mashed. Half of the two toppings are stirred into the mashed potatoes, the other half is spread on top of the mashed potatoes. Vegans can have it made with water instead of milk. Of course, you can either eat the whole thing right away or take it with you to go in a tightly sealed container.

Hard facts and information about Brezelina

Brezelina also has a handy stamp booklet. After 10 visits, you get a free pretzel. And if you can't get enough of Brezelina, you can take home a Brezelina-branded thermal mug (for €6.90). What also personally won me over: You can bring your own container or mug, and the Brezelina crew will happily fill it with your mashed potatoes or coffee and give you a discount of 20% (!). It doesn't matter if it's an empty Brezelina mashed potato cup or not, because the core idea is, of course, Brezelina's environmentally conscious approach. Cool, right?

The meatloaf pretzel with cucumber

You should definitely be able to find the stores. They're located at Stachus, not far from the train station entrance, on the mezzanine level towards the Mathäser cinema. The moment you spot the pink and white polka-dotted walls and the stylish yet simple design, you'll know you've arrived at Brezelina. Oh, and by the way... Brezelina also offers pretzel delivery. You order in advance, specify the location and time, and the pretzels arrive fresh, fluffy, and generously topped. Very convenient. Enjoy and stop by. If you like pretzels, you'll love Brezelina. Try the Leberkäse pretzel! Mmm.
