Taxis Garden | Beer Garden When I feel like leaving my southern corner of Munich, I absolutely love going to Taxisgarten. The beer garden is beautifully quiet, right in the heart of Neuhausen, and for me personally, it's a bit like the "Neuhausen" Michaeligarten – another beer garden that, as you know, I really like. You'll probably only truly understand why I see certain parallels once you've been to both. One thing is definitely the idyllic natural setting, which gives Taxisgarten its special charm. Beautifully green, beautifully peaceful – just nature. Since you can't eat nature, my gaze then wandered from the green of the trees directly to the menu of delicacies on the building's side. "Absolutely fantastic!" – there's a good selection. So I took a seat and started sampling.
What awaits you in the Taxis Garden?
If you walk through the main entrance, under the official Taxisgarten sign, you can't miss the beer garden. It's divided into a pavilion area in the front third, furnished with white furniture and located directly opposite the salad bar (more on that in a moment), and a spacious, classically Bavarian-style beer garden area with wooden benches under imposing trees. It's cozy and not as hectic as many other beer gardens in the city. But don't think the Taxisgarten is quiet – not at all! It can accommodate 1,500 people, and it's not uncommon for people to have to squeeze together to make sure everyone gets a seat. Pure beer garden atmosphere. Of course, good beer (Hofbräu München beer | liter €7.90), snacks, and other Bavarian fare are also available. It's definitely worth a closer look.
Snack platters, spare ribs, sausages and more.
I'll let the cat out of the bag: the ribs are the best. And the sausages. And the salads. No, seriously. The ribs are—or so I'm told—so good that carnivores flock to them in droves, demanding them. But the thing is, I was already there with my sausages, my starter salads, a shandy (a liter for €7.90), and various Obatzda cheese spreads. Then, anticipating my next visit, I also needed something sweet, so the ribs were reserved for my next trip. But so you can still see them, I grabbed one of those aforementioned men at the checkout and quickly asked him for a photo of the ribs—without him in it. Don't they look great?
I can really comment on the taste when it comes to the numerous main courses. They're of above-average beer garden quality, and the selection isn't bad either. First, let's talk about the salads, which are usually the first thing you eat. Or as a side dish. It doesn't really matter. They always taste great and are prepared with a lot of love in the Taxisgarten and attractively presented at the serving counter. (Click through the pictures to see the counter and the selection.) Unfortunately, they were out of the green Obatzda I love, but the friendly cook didn't hesitate and simply made a huge bowl of it. You can't get any fresher than that, and I was even allowed to peek over the shoulder—or rather, into the mixing machine.
As you can see from my pictures, my companion and I – who goes to a beer garden alone, after all – ordered seven different salads and five different cheese and cream combinations, or rather, variations of Obatzda (a Bavarian cheese spread). Always sample sizes, of course. One Obatzda was classic, another with dried peppers, another green, and so on – a look at the gallery will help you see the variety. Quite creative and diverse. We also had two small, very fresh pretzels, spritzers (rhubarb and apple), and a small shandy. Those who prefer to abstain from alcohol are well served with non-alcoholic wheat beer (a liter for €8), which is also very popular at Taxisgarten. (Incidentally, the Taxis Women's Clinic is just a stone's throw away. Proud new fathers probably prefer the alcoholic beer when visiting a beer garden, but this option allows pregnant mothers to join in the toast.)
Anyone who thinks that's all is mistaken. As is customary, there was a short break after pretzels, salads, radishes, and the like, and then everyone tucked into the main courses. From delicacies starting at €3.10 (spare ribs, chicken, fried chicken, pork knuckle, suckling pig roast, roast pork with crackling, pork schnitzel, currywurst, pork sausages, meatloaf, bratwurst, and meatballs) to various vegetarian dishes starting at €2.90 (creamed mushrooms with bread dumplings, baked potato, grilled vegetables, millet fritters with ratatouille, or homemade vegetable fritters), to various side dishes starting at €2.20 (such as fries, country potatoes, corn on the cob, potato dumplings, etc.), there really is something for everyone. At the salad bar, there are also various snacks starting at €1.40 (open-faced sandwiches, Landjäger sausage, Kaminwurzn sausage, radishes, etc.). If you can't find anything you like there, you're either not Bavarian, weird, or full. 😉
And how did it taste?
We ordered the aforementioned millet patties (€5.20) to try them and the pork sausages with sauerkraut (€7.20). I don't need to mention which was more filling, but the millet patty, combined with the rather soft and well-seasoned ratatouille, wasn't bad at all. What other beer garden is so creative with vegetarians? My sausages were fantastic! So good, in fact, that while writing this, I feel like having more. But you can't have everything, of course, but you could always get some or enjoy them on-site in a sunny or shady spot within the beer garden. The pretzels are nice and soft, but not soggy, the beer is just as you'd want it, and the... you remember... Auszogne (€3.30) and the fresh apple cake (always €3 on Sundays and public holidays) were also delicious. The apple pie was, strictly speaking, much better than one would expect – stereotypically, as is typical for Germans – in a beer garden. So leave that "sugar corner" in your stomach free for cake and other treats.
„"A table for 10 please!"“
Taxisgarten wouldn't be Taxisgarten if there wasn't something extra. In this case, it's the opportunity to reserve a table in the beer garden, complete with a snack platter featuring South Tyrolean speck, Obatzda (Bavarian cheese spread), radishes, a pepperoni sausage, and a small pretzel, for yourself and nine friends. You simply call, make your reservation, and your table will be ready on the specified date. (Available from €5.90 per person, making it an affordable treat for just under €60 for 10 people. Beer is not included, of course.) I'll definitely try that sometime.
Key facts and personal conclusion
Taxisgarten, run by Haberl since 1982, is located in Neuhausen – just a stone's throw from the "Gern" U-Bahn station. Parking shouldn't be a problem in the area, though getting there on the way back might be ;-). The building itself, where the delicacies, salads, and other dishes are prepared, dates back to 1924 and is still quite impressive. If you have the chance to visit Taxisgarten, do it. And if I may offer a suggestion regarding the menu: spare ribs, chicken, pretzels, Auszogne (a type of Bavarian fried pastry), and beer – that's all you need to be happy here. For a true beer garden experience, choose the area in the back; the "white" pavilion area (for 250 people) with real olive trees is a bit more like a restaurant terrace – lovely! The clientele includes local residents, young people, couples, businesspeople, and just about anyone who can walk. Keep checking my website – it won't be long before I'm giving away a table with food and drinks. Just wait and see... no... have a beer! And for the kids, once they're out of the Taxis Clinic and old enough, there's a small playground area. It gets especially cozy in the evenings. Fairy lights in the trees and a relaxed evening atmosphere create an even more authentic beer garden summer feeling. Pretty nice, right?
