„WINE MAY ONE“: This is what it was like at ELLA & what's coming in July – The sixth event in Mastercard's monthly series of wine dinners, in cooperation with the city magazine inMünchen, has now concluded with the June event. This means six outstanding menus with wine pairings – each time in a different fantastic Munich restaurant. In June, the wine dinner took place at Restaurant ELLA in the Lenbachhaus, right on Königsplatz. It's a restaurant well-known not only to those with a passion for art and fine dining, but also to anyone who appreciates wine, Italian flair, and sunny days for a relaxing day. I was therefore delighted to be able to attend the sixth wine dinner. What follows is a look back at the menu I enjoyed (…to whet your appetite for the July event ;-)) as well as a little preview of the wine dinner in July.
Wine Dinner June 2018: ELLA at the Lenbachhaus – that's how it was!
I've known ELLA at Königsplatz for a long time, and I've spent many a winter's day there – bundled up in a jacket and with a wool blanket – as well as countless sunny hours on the terrace or in the stylish restaurant. So I was thrilled when I learned that the Weinmahleins event series was also stopping at ELLA. In June, this meant that participating guests enjoyed five exquisite courses, a wealth of wine knowledge from Export Manager Karin Mausser of the world-famous Frescobaldi winery, and a great atmosphere at the table. Even after setting down the plate for the first course, it was clear: this evening was going to be delicious. And it remained so until the last sip of wine was drunk and the cutlery was laid down. From authentic Italian bread to lovingly presented courses (here From reviewing the menu in detail again, to the Italian-inspired background music, everything was presented in a unique way. Karin Mausser's brief "wine presentations," interspersed between and before each course, gave each wine its own story and character, allowing for even greater enjoyment with every course and glass.
The evening began, in liquid form, with a creamy 2013 Spumante Leonia Pomino Brut – a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – which accompanied the evening's amuse-bouche (arugula sorbet with a perfectly balanced Spumante jelly and fried tomato skin). The subsequent octopus (with vineyard peaches, wild herb salad, and a panzanella chip) was paired with a 2017 Massovivo Vermentino from the Ammiraglia winery – one of ten wineries owned by the Frescobaldi family. My favorite of the evening: the very special rosé (made from Syrah and Vermentino grapes) from last year. I happily accepted a refill, which, by the way, is readily offered at Weinmahleins upon request. The rosé also served as a demonstration of their willingness to answer any questions about wine. If you have any suggestions regarding the wines served during the event, please feel free to share them with the wine expert, the restaurant manager, or the team. For the main course – elk with Vinsanto figs, polenta fries, and artichokes – the wine finally turned red, paired with a 2013 Syrah from the same Frescobaldi winery as the rosé. Not my favorite of the evening, but it complemented the dish well. Last but not least, the cardamom brownie with hazelnut cream and citrus salad (delicious!) was followed by espresso, a sip of wine, and pleasant conversation to reflect on the evening.
What I particularly appreciated about this wine dinner was that Managing Director Florian August took the time beforehand to give a brief introduction, talking about ELLA, its history, the art on the walls, and, of course, its culinary style. The guests were thus welcomed and sent off into the evening with the right mindset and a corresponding sense of anticipation for the meal. Also present at the table, of course, was the city magazine inMünchen, which was hosting the wine dinner at ELLA. so perceived.
Preview: Wine dinner in July: Restaurant Blauer Bock
At the end of July, you can enjoy a special wine and food dinner at the Blauer Bock restaurant. All you have to do is head to the centrally located Sebastiansplatz, take a seat at your pre-reserved table, and relax. On July 27, 2018, starting at 7:00 p.m. (dinner begins at 7:30 p.m.), a four-course meal with perfectly paired wines will be offered. Managing Director Stefan Grosse and Head Chef Hans Jörg Bachmeier have come up with something truly special. This time, the wines are from the Comunità San Patrignano – a village near Rimini that houses Europe's largest drug rehabilitation center and provides employment for up to 2,500 former drug addicts. This includes the production of high-quality food – among them, exceptional wines, which you can sample on the evening of July 27th in conjunction with the menu. The Blauer Bock restaurant focuses exclusively on wines from Germany, Austria, France, and Italy. The winery, which presents its wines at the Blauer Bock restaurant, is managed by Riccardo Cotarella, an Italian oenologist. The wines have been featured at the Blauer Bock for over eight years, and the winery has also been visited by the team and recognized by the Munich restaurateur as a unique enterprise. This also naturally supports the restaurant's extensive social engagement.
This evening will also offer a culinary treat. It begins with a Vitello Tonnato "Blauer Bock 2018" accompanied by a Franciacorta from Spumante Berlucchi. Next comes pappardelle with porcini mushrooms and white peach. The third course, the main course, is tagliata of US beef with arugula, heirloom tomatoes, and mountain Parmesan. The evening concludes – at least culinarily – with "Michaela's Tiramisu" and fresh berries. You'll have to let the accompanying wine be a surprise. 🙂
The winery is overseen by the renowned Italian oenologist Riccardo Cotarella, and several San Patrignano wines have already been awarded the prestigious "Tre Biccheri" by the Gambero Rosso wine guide. Eight years ago, Stefan Grosse himself visited the estate, accompanied by San Patrignano wine export manager Stefano Bariani and Sigrid Brantl (Signora del Vino), to gain firsthand experience of this truly unique enterprise. Since then, the Blauer Bock restaurant has carried the wines, thereby supporting the estate's extensive social engagement. Stefano Bariani and Sigrid Brantl will both be present at Weinmahleins and will share insights into the wines and the San Patrignano institution.
The city magazine in Munich shows in his article Incidentally, this is also a small preview of the wine dinner in July.
