Christmas markets in Munich Hooray! It's that time of year again: Advent and Christmas. And of course, just like in previous years, I've put together an overview of Munich's Christmas markets. This year, I even asked you a bit about your favorite places and, of course, I've taken your suggestions to heart.
My list of Munich Christmas markets covers everything from classic and colorful to cozy and inviting, perfect for a leisurely stroll – there's something for everyone. Included are the Medieval Christmas Market in Munich, the Munich Airport Christmas Market (or, for the first time this year, the "Winter Market" at the airport), Tollwood on the Theresienwiese, the traditional market at Marienplatz, the market at the Chinese Tower in the English Garden, the market at Blutenburg Castle, the Munich Fairy Tale Forest, and more. Opening times are always listed so you know how long you can enjoy drinking, celebrating, and getting into the Christmas spirit. The area surrounding Munich and the region around our beautiful city also has plenty to offer. I'm sure you'll find a market that meets your needs. Take a look!
THE CLASSICS
Anyone who knows Munich, lives here, and strolls through the markets every year will certainly be familiar with all of these. Even though they are among the most popular and sometimes very crowded markets, a visit is definitely worthwhile. They are all very centrally located and easily accessible by public transport. Marienplatz For example, you can admire Munich's largest Christmas tree with around 3,000 lights. Medieval Christmas Market In contrast, Salvatorplatz impresses with its extensive stage and music program, numerous craftspeople and exhibitors, and the winter landscape and idyllic setting. Chinese Tower The view over the (snow-covered) English Garden is simply unbeatable. Every market – even those known far beyond the city limits – has its own special charm. Airport Christmas Market / Winter Market Personally, I find it a bit chilly, as the surroundings don't feel Christmassy at all. However, the mulled wine, potato pancakes, and other treats are especially delicious.

THE G'MIATLICHEN (for non-Bavarians: The easygoing ones)
In my opinion, some Christmas markets are simply much cozier than others, or that I absolutely wouldn't want to miss. The following belong to this category for me personally. Haidhausen Christmas Market It's incredibly idyllic, probably precisely because it's quite manageable in size. The mulled wine tastes fantastic, and the various stalls and booths, arranged in a circle, invite you to browse, drink mulled wine, and linger. But the... Neuhaus Christmas Market, as well as the inviting Christmas village in the Munich Residence Definitely worth a visit or two. I'm there every year for a couple of mulled wines, at least. Blutenburg Christmas Magic It only lasts four days, but you should definitely visit it – if only for the magnificent castle. And also on Sendling Christmas Market There is plenty to see right at Harras, as well as various Christmas treats. The Bogenhausen Christmas Magic Forest This year marks the 7th edition of the event, which attracts visitors with numerous exhibitors, culinary delights, and a charity event every Sunday. They are all very cozy.

THE „SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT“ CHRISTMAS MARKETS
Boring is so yesterday. 😉 You should definitely visit these Christmas markets if you like things a little more colorful, vibrant, unusual (and longer). Pink Christmas It's the legendary Christmas market for Munich's gay scene, but of course it's open to everyone. It's also Munich's only market where the stalls are open and the mulled wine mugs are full until 10 pm. The... Alm Wild Market At Hacker-Pschorr, right on the Viktualienmarkt, with homemade tarte flambée, great mulled wine and a real party atmosphere. Munich Ice Magic You're probably all familiar with the opportunity to go ice skating, rent skates, and drink mulled wine on the upper gallery – it's great fun every year, even if it's not particularly traditional. Get your skates out and off you go! If you enjoy it Swedish If you have, then you should look at the Swedish Christmas Bazaar with Swedish crafts and culinary highlights from Sweden. Feuerzangenbowle at the Isartor It's not a typical Christmas market, but somehow a must for all Munich residents and visitors.
Not specifically listed below, but also worth visiting according to a tip from acquaintances: The Winterhof Munich, located in Courtyard of Café Cord. With hot drinks, street food and music, the summer terrace of Café Cord transforms into an inviting winter courtyard for cozy hours.Website).

Alcohol, in the form of delicious mulled wine, and driving don't exactly mix, but at least the passengers can enjoy a cup or two. And for the drivers, these wonderful Christmas markets surely offer plenty of delicious treats as well.
1. (Reader's tip!) Andechs Christmas Market: (December 4th – December 6th, 2015, daily from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM), Christmas market on the Holy Mountain with a live nativity scene, lots of handicrafts, delicious mulled wine and a very rural setting. Very idyllic; Website

Perger Market near Breitbrunn am Ammersee: (November 29 – December 1, 2015, Fri. and Sat. 2:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., Sun. 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.), Herrschingerstraße 51, Herrsching am Ammersee; this year marks the 12th time the event takes place; enjoy the pre-Christmas atmosphere between the orchard, candlelight and fire pits in front of the cider press – directly on the Ammersee, enjoy a campfire atmosphere under apple trees or in the heated tent.
