Aloha POKE on Türkenstraße A brand-new hotspot is opening in Munich's Maxvorstadt district: Aloha POKE. Poke (pronounced "poo-kee") is Hawaiian for "small cuts." Aloha POKE is bringing a major trend to Munich. At Aloha POKE, tender raw fish, crisp vegetables, fresh fruit, various spices, and homemade sauces are combined and served on (wild) rice or salad. With their small shop, the two Munich-based founders—who stumbled upon poke bowls by chance during a trip to Hawaii—are tapping into a global trend. A real hit in Hawaii and coastal cities across the USA, the poke trend has finally arrived in Germany. Healthy, delicious, light, and endlessly customizable—these are just a few of the qualities that define Aloha POKE bowls. They'll be available in Munich starting Wednesday, April 5, 2017.
Aloha POKE – that’s how it works!

The concept is quite simple. Once you enter the cozy and relaxed restaurant, which seats about 20 guests, you first decide what you're in the mood for at the counter: Are you really hungry? – Then the large poke bowl (for €12.40) or perhaps the regular size (for €9.40)? Once you've decided, you choose the base (salad, wild rice, or white rice) for your poke bowl. Step 2: Tuna, salmon, shrimp, or organic turkey. Tofu is available as an alternative for vegetarians. Then it's time to choose your toppings, from which you can select three per bowl. These include, for example, avocado, kiwi, mango, edamame, celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, and much more. The foundation of your bowl is ready, and now it's time to "tune" it, i.e., choose your sauce (for example, "Peanut Coriander," "Hot Mayo," "White Peach Wasabi," or "Orange Honey Mustard"). The final touches are then added as a "happy ending": goji berries, coconut chips, roasted seaweed, fried onions, macadamia nuts, and much more.
In the end, you'll have a unique poke bowl, completely customized to your own taste. But no matter which combination you choose, it will be incredibly healthy, delicious, and satisfying. Stir once before eating and enjoy!.
My personal test
There are countless options to choose from. Besides the fresh taste, what I liked best was the intense focus on fresh ingredients, high quality, and sustainability. The bowls are really filling, but you don't feel stuffed or overstuffed afterward. You can taste the freshness with every bite.
For my report, I had the opportunity to visit before the official opening and sample the food. In an interview with the two founders, Tom Kruse and Claus Kratzeisen, I learned more about the concept and founding story of Aloha POKE. As mentioned, it started more by chance than by design, and has since become a well-thought-out concept implemented with considerable expertise: Aloha POKE. Read more in the interview here:
Interview with the founders:
Ask: What exactly is Poke?
Tom Kruse: Poke is a Hawaiian dish, and the term means "cut into small pieces." Fishermen simply tasted their fresh catch right there on board. Raw and unprocessed.
Ask: Not more?
Tom Kruse: It doesn't get any fresher or more authentic than this. The fishermen then mixed together the ingredients they had brought from their gardens: vegetables, fruit, nuts, various spices – that's it. Poke thrives on its mix. Every bowl tastes different, depending on the combination.
Claus Kratzeisen: And that's precisely what's so exciting. We don't change anything, we don't adulterate anything. We offer the ingredients in excellent quality. Our guests can then put together whatever they feel like.
Ask: Do you have any experience in the restaurant industry?
Tom Kruse: Not me at all. I come from television and did documentaries. I'd still be doing that today if I hadn't tasted the best food of my life during a three-month stay in Hawaii. I can hardly believe that I'm actually opening my own street food bar now.
Claus Kratzeisen: I come from the restaurant industry. For many years I was the gastronomic director at the Bayerischer Hof hotel and responsible for purchasing and quality management at Käfer delicatessen.
Ask: And now for the ingredients for „Aloha Poke“…
Claus Kratzeisen: Exactly.
Tom Kruse: Claus's meticulousness when selecting products is truly remarkable. For example, we spent four months trying almost 80 different types of coconut chips. By the end, I couldn't stand the sight of them anymore. Then, one day, Claus tested a completely new sample and declared, "This is it!" And indeed, the chips were fantastic. It's the same with the tomatoes. They're smaller than currants, but their flavor is enormous. With Claus, it's always either perfect or it's gone.
Ask: How did you two get together?
Claus Kratzeisen: We've known each other for 20 years, we play football together. Then Tom suddenly came up to me and asked me to try something, namely the "best fast food" in the world. I laughed, and two weeks later I actually tried it in his garden. That's when I stopped laughing. I quit my job and am now a partner at Aloha Poke.
Tom Kruse: When I returned from Hawaii with my wife and two daughters, I initially only prepared poke for friends and acquaintances. When they were just as enchanted by poke as I was, we thought: So many more people should be able to enjoy something so incredibly delicious! And then it all began: idea, concept, planning, and finally, the perfect partner at the right time.
Ask: Why will poke be a hit in Germany?
Tom Kruse: Poke is a huge craze on the US coasts. No wonder, because poke is incredibly delicious, light, healthy, and easy. You get your bowl in less than 90 seconds, stir it, and: Wow…
Ask: No catch?
Claus Kratzeisen: The food is amazing, the ingredients are fantastic. The fish is sustainably caught or farmed, and the packaging is compostable. The only catch: hardly anyone here knows what poke is. Yet.
