Café Ignaz in Schwabing is a well-known and long-established (over 29 years) relatively small and intimate café specializing in vegetarian and vegan cuisine, located on Georgenstraße. Café Ignaz offers 35 seats inside. The owner has been a vegetarian for over 30 years and therefore only offers vegetarian and vegan dishes.
From the outside, the café doesn't really draw you in, and even after entering, standing inside and looking at the counter on the left, which stretches along the long room and displays baked goods, numerous cakes, and various small dishes, it's hard to imagine sitting comfortably and eating inside. Outside, there are quite a few wooden tables with aluminum wicker chairs and blue tablecloths for guests (40 seats).
As mentioned, Café Ignaz offers baked goods (all made in their own bakery) and light meals, as well as soups and appetizers, various main courses, and desserts. They also have a breakfast and brunch menu, as Café Ignaz offers brunch on weekends. (Reservations for brunch can only be made on the day of your visit, starting at 8:00 a.m., and cost €9.90 per person; children up to 10 years old pay only €4.00. Brunch is served Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). All dishes are also available for takeaway for €6.00. There is a wide selection of appetizers and soups ranging from €3.00 to €7.50, such as vegetable tart, soup of the day (e.g., tomato or vegetable soup), small or large mixed salad, carrot salad with walnuts, Greek salad, and an appetizer platter with soup and various salads, etc.
Those with a lighter appetite can choose from the menu's selection of small vegetarian snacks – for example, vegetable patties, spring rolls, fried potatoes with seitan or mushrooms, onions and arugula, salad platter with goat cheese, etc. These snacks start at six euros and cost a maximum of 8.50 euros – but they're quite filling. For instance, a large slice of vegetable tart with the soup of the day costs 7.80 euros – no complaints there. A breakfast buffet is also available from 8:00 am to 11:30 am for 7 euros per person, even on weekdays – except Tuesdays.
There's a very extensive selection of main courses. They all cost €9.90, except for the pasta dish with oat cream, carrots, snow peas, bell peppers, smoked tofu, and arugula, which costs €19.90. Otherwise, it's a paradise for vegetarians: various cheese-topped dishes such as potatoes with zucchini, broccoli, or feta cheese (this is the one I chose – very substantial, very filling, I couldn't finish it all!), or gnocchi with your choice of banana, zucchini, and Gorgonzola, or spinach and mushrooms, or dates and zucchini, or or or… endless variations. The same goes for the couscous dishes, the wok dishes, and the Café Ignaz classics. Check them out! Map The best thing to do is simply try it out yourself. We sat for a while at our small – somewhat cramped – table in the café and couldn't decide because of the large selection.
My companion chose the Thai vegetable stir-fry with noodles, ginger, coconut milk, and raisins for €10. The portion was perfectly adequate and the food tasted good, but I wouldn't necessarily order it again: it was a bit bland and the vegetables were too firm. It also took quite a while for us to be served and for our food to arrive. As a starter, we ordered a rice and spinach soup, which was very flavorful and quite filling. (Next time, I would probably order something with couscous or a vegetable cake as a starter.)
The service was very friendly, but overall it was rather uncomfortable, as it was very crowded with some noisy children, and the noise level was quite high due to the full tables. We were there on a weekend; the brunch buffet was set up and looked quite alright, but from what I could quickly see, it didn't offer anything particularly special – I might try it again soon.
The tables in the café are very close together, in a separate room from the entrance area with the aforementioned counter. The furniture is simple and rather old-fashioned, but perfectly adequate and quite pleasant for sitting and eating. Just give it a try. I'll definitely be back. In addition to the standard menu, there's a very extensive daily menu with numerous vegetarian dishes and even two different set menus with a starter, main course, and dessert. After finishing our meals, we ordered an apple cake and a redberry cake from the counter – you really can't go wrong with the cake at Café Ignaz.
Card payments are accepted at Café Ignaz. We paid only €32 including tip for two non-alcoholic drinks, a starter (soup), two main courses, and two large slices of cake. Give it a try – perhaps for breakfast or cake after lunch. It's certainly not fancy – more like trendy. Enjoy!
I'll be back: Maybe sometime when I want to dine in a more unusual way and don't care about space or a fancy atmosphere.
