CHOCION_Finest_Chocolate_Haidhausen_LogoCHOCION FINEST CHOCOLATE – Heaven on Earth – Is there anything better than discovering a small, newly opened chocolate shop with pralines, hot drinks, and other treats on a cold Saturday afternoon? No, and if so, very few things. That's exactly what happened to me recently on a freezing cold weekend day during a walk in the new Haidhausen Werksviertel district. Luckily, I came across the brand-new and inviting shop CHOCION FINEST CHOCOLATE. Now, after sampling some pralines, ice cream, coffee, and hot drinks, I'd like to tell you more about my experience and CHOCION FINEST CHOCOLATE.

While there, I had the opportunity to chat with owner and operator, professional chocolatier Andreas Mohrs. His main job is as a pilot, but he also runs two CHOCION FINEST CHOCOLATE shops with great passion. Besides the shop I discovered in Berg am Laim, there's a second shop roughly twice the size – about 140 square meters – with a spacious terrace. (The Berg am Laim branch will also have a large terrace starting in spring 2017.) What both locations have in common: they sell exclusively handmade chocolates, crafted with meticulous attention to detail and using the highest quality ingredients.

Waffles are also available.

In detail, this means that only honest, fair, and handcrafted chocolate is sold. Nothing you can buy, taste, or give as a gift at the CHOCION FINEST CHOCOLATE shop is mass-produced without heart and passion. A thoughtful and sustainable approach to sourcing raw materials is paramount to the chocolatier. For example, the cocoa bean – a 100% Fino de Aroma fine cocoa bean – comes directly from the producer in Colombia, without any intermediaries. It is refined through the traditional conching process – one of the last, delicate steps in conventional chocolate production – which develops the specific chocolate flavor and allows the aromas to unfold. The organic cane sugar used is also 100% fair trade and comes from Paraguay, with a slightly caramel-like flavor. The (whole) milk and cream is 100% "Sternefair" milk – completely GMO-free and from bee-friendly farms in Bavaria. Sounds pretty good, right? And I know it tastes good too after my taste test.

One of numerous gifts in the store

I sampled two different hot drinks, as well as some chocolates and the Italian ice cream flavors, which are new to the selection – only available at the Berg am Laim location, i.e., the grand opening. Finally, I grabbed a small Florentine – also homemade – to take outside. But let's get into the details: They offer countless different types of chocolates. During my visit, there were 25 different varieties, attractively displayed in the counter. Each one seemed to be calling out, "Eat me, Bianca!" and I heeded the call to a few. I opted for two different chocolates and a piece of the handmade chocolate, which is also available in numerous varieties. They offer a wide range of truffles, nougat, marzipan, champagne chocolates, and much more. The selection is indescribable. Right next to the chocolates are the aforementioned handmade chocolates. Whether cranberry, cashew, whole nut, or almond slivers – there's sure to be something for every chocolate lover. The chocolate pieces can be purchased on site for €3.99 (100 grams) in practical and nicely packaged cellophane bags with a ribbon and various assorted varieties.

Chocolate pieces in various varieties

Anyone looking for more chocolatey gift ideas should check out the shelf behind the counter, which is stocked with pralines, ice cream, and coffee. There you'll find (currently) a wide variety of chocolate Santas. From tiny to gigantic, these Christmas specialties are lovingly handcrafted. What impressed me most: Since Andreas produces everything himself, there are no limits to the design possibilities and personal preferences. So, if you'd like a custom-designed chocolate Santa, you can contact CHOCION FINEST CHOCOLATE and they'll be happy to help. But that's not all. In addition to small gift sets with fresh pralines, chocolates, chocolate-covered fruit, or even cubes of various chocolates on sticks for hot chocolate, CHOCION FINEST CHOCOLATE has something truly special: personalized chocolate postcards. You can hardly find a cooler or more fitting gift for someone with a sweet tooth. I was so impressed that I wanted to learn more. Ordering and configuring your own chocolate postcard is super easy online. All you have to do is choose the type of chocolate, upload your own photo, write a greeting, and enter the recipient's address. The recipient will then receive it. Isn't that cool? Even if the postman doesn't eat it (… ;-)…don't worry, it will of course be securely packaged…), everyone is sure to be delighted. (The price is also fair at €5.90. And of course, you can expect the same premium chocolate.)

The chocolate assortment

It might not seem like the most obvious thing to think about right now, but it will definitely be relevant the next time the sun shines: ice cream! Delicious Italian ice cream, made according to a secret recipe by ice cream specialist Giovanni L. from Italy. During my visit, there was a wide variety of flavors available: speculoos, Mozart praline, New York cheesecake, as well as classics like vanilla and premium chocolate. I was lucky enough to sample a few spoonfuls – as I'm sure you were too – and I'm already looking forward to a warm day when I'll be craving ice cream.

Here you can definitely expect exceptionally good chocolate – whether it's used for pralines, chocolate bars, Santa Claus figures, or fruit coatings. The shop is truly a little gem. Even if you're just looking for a coffee (emilo coffee), a hot chocolate (vanilla, milk, dark, etc.), or some chocolatey gifts for your loved ones – stop by CHOCION FINEST CHOCOLATE. I'm sure you won't leave empty-handed (or empty-stuffed). A little praline here and there helps us forget the winter blues faster, believe me. You can also shop online and get free shipping on orders over €30.

Dear Ms. Bianca,

The Werksviertel district is not located in the Au-Haidhausen district, but in the Berg am Laim district. How can anyone, despite doing good work, spout such nonsense? Please find out where each restaurant or shop is located beforehand. We drive to Salzburg every month to buy groceries and can highly recommend "Franz der Wirt" in Bergheim, on the Salzburg city limits.

    Hi Marco,
Don't get unfriendly right away. Here's a quote from the city about the district: "...The new creative quarter in Munich's east. Between Haidhausen and Berg am Laim, Werk 3 offers a...". 😉 Thanks for the tip about "Franz der Wirt" – I'll check it out. Best regards and Happy New Year 2017. Bianca.

      Hello Bianca,

As a native of Trudering and a resident of the future district of Berg am Laim for almost 15 years, I am very annoyed by the many misinformations concerning the city of Munich.
Many people know absolutely nothing about the district in which they live, let alone its boundaries. The city of Munich speaks the same language as many real estate agents.
It's definitely true that the so-called "Werksviertel" (factory district) is located in the Berg am Laim district. Due to a legal dispute between the residents of Steinstrasse in Haidhausen and the Schmidt bakery, the bakery has relocated its headquarters to Neumarkter Strasse in Berg am Laim. It's a fantastic building with a very modern shop. Treat yourself and visit the new bakery at Neumarkter Strasse 47, opposite Random House. You'll be delighted! By the way, the most modern Aldi in the world will open in the Baumkirchen district (Berg am Laim) in the summer of 2017. We're not regular Aldi shoppers, but we'll definitely check it out. We do our grocery shopping once a month at the Maxi-Markt in Anif near Salzburg. All the best and continued success. Kind regards from Berg am Laim, Marco Lucca

      Hi Marco,
I'll go there sometime. Both to the Aldi you mentioned – not really my usual store, but I'm interested – and to the bread bakery. I've now changed the article to Berg am Laim. 😉
