UPDATE: Henry's Deli once had locations in Elisenhof (see text below) and in Pasing. Only the Pasing branch remains.
Henry's Deli is a relatively new restaurant located between Munich's main train station and the famous Karlsplatz Stachus square. My companion and I stumbled upon it by chance during a lunchtime stroll through the city – thank goodness! The concept of Henry's Deli is simple yet successful and well thought out. They offer a variety of basic salads and four different burger options (each €6.40): hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken burger, and a vegetarian option for those who prefer meat-free meals. I've already been there twice in the last two weeks, enjoying a salad and a latte macchiato, while my companions had curry with a separately selected topping and a vegetarian burger with fries.
If I had to describe Henry's Deli – which also has a location at the Pasing Arcades – briefly and concisely, "cozy, affordable, simple, delicious" would probably be the best fit. We immediately felt comfortable, well looked after, and served in a friendly manner. The food is served on the very clearly and simply arranged counter. Menus, The menu, which was laid out on the tables, was presented. As mentioned: simple basic dishes with a choice of toppings ranging from shrimp, chicken, tofu, or beef, to baked feta cheese for salads, and curries available in three different spice levels. The portions are exceptionally fair and reasonable for the prices. My companion's vegetarian burger wasn't a double portion, which is available for an additional €2.50, and was barely finished. My companion's green curry, at €7.50 – meaning a base price of €5.50 plus €2 for the extra chicken topping – was plentiful, attractively presented, and very delicious and fresh. It was served in a kind of shallow wooden bowl garnished with two long chives. In addition to my latte macchiato (€2.50), we also ordered two sugar-free Fritz Colas for €2.70 each and a Spezi (€2.70). Everything was served simultaneously, warm, and attractively presented. Unfortunately, Henry's doesn't offer sweetener. So, if you don't like sugar, you have to enjoy your coffee plain. However, the exceptionally friendly chef was kind enough to find some for me when he realized I wanted it and couldn't get any, and brought it to my table in a small glass. The service was absolutely top-notch! My basic salad (small portion for an unbeatable €2.95, large portion for €4.95) with an additional topping (prawns for an extra €2) came with three small slices of fresh and delicious bread. The salad was also completely filling, and there was absolutely nothing to complain about. Bite-sized pieces with plenty of fresh ingredients (basic ingredients: cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and dressing).
On our first visit, we paid just €21 including tip for two cold Cokes, a salad, and a generous portion of curry, and we both left the restaurant satisfied. Where else can you get such a good meal for such a low price these days – even in Munich's city center? This restaurant certainly isn't the place if you're planning a long, leisurely evening or afternoon with friends, family, or relatives in an upscale setting, but it's all the more ideal if you're looking for delicious burgers or crispy currywurst (also available in a tofu version for €4.50 each), good salads, soups (carrot-orange-ginger soup, potato soup, or cream of tomato soup for €3.95 each), or various scrambled egg dishes in a relaxed and casual atmosphere.
The harmonious ambiance is perfectly complemented by the three-legged wooden stools and the matching, very small wooden tables (nine in total), which just barely accommodate the menu, salt and pepper shakers, and a cutlery holder. These elements fit seamlessly into the overall concept of Henry's Deli. Orange columns, exposed pipes on the ceilings, stylish lamps on the walls, a huge black menu board above the dominant bar/counter offering a view into the open, very small kitchen, a small display case with fresh croissants, cakes, and pastries—it's simply a cool location. There are also a few tables for four (five in total)—that is, two small tables pushed together. The interior features plenty of wood, ample natural light through the glass front, and an open view of the outdoor seating area. Another pleasant surprise was the spaciousness of the tables; there's plenty of open space throughout the restaurant.
The concept seems very simple, yet everything is well thought out. The staff is exceptionally friendly; we didn't have to wait long for anything, and even the three of us were all served and brought our chosen dishes at the same time. In the evening, they also offer various long drinks (€7.50 each) and delicious Aperol Spritz, Henry's Spritz, or Hugo for €5.90 each. We highly recommend it. What could be better than sitting comfortably with friends, sipping a drink, and then enjoying a delicious burger, salad, or other snack?
So, if you ever find yourself in Munich's city center, take the time to stroll over to Henry's centrally located yet not overcrowded restaurant, enjoy burgers and other delicious dishes, and leave with a full stomach and a wallet that's almost as full after paying. I'll definitely be back. Maybe you'll even see me sitting there, biting into my tofu currywurst with fries – which, by the way, were very fresh and crispy.
Getting there is very easy, as all S-Bahn lines, various U-Bahn lines (1, 2, 4, 5, and 7), trams, and buses stop at Munich Central Station. It's just a one- to two-minute walk from the main hall. Card payments are accepted. You might want to call ahead to make a reservation. While there were plenty of free tables around lunchtime when we were there, the outdoor seating was quickly taken as soon as the sun came out. Enjoy your visit!.
I'll be back: Absolutely. For anyone with a lunch break in Munich's city center or who's hungry after a stroll around town, Henry's Deli is the perfect meeting place. You might smell a little like burgers afterwards.
