I don't want to generalize, but some things that started in a garage have turned out to be quite successful. If you don't know what I'm referring to, you should Google it. 🙂 But back to Grillido. That's what this is all about. How did I connect this to a garage, and who is Grillido? It's quite simple. The guys, or rather their products, which I'm presenting to you today, were born, along with the brainstorming phase, in a garage. Meanwhile, Grillido has made quite a name for itself with its range of various reduced-fat and high-protein sausages. Reason enough to take a closer look at these sausages.
History of Grillido
Whether being called a "sausage visionary" is particularly "sexy" is debatable, but what's undeniably pretty cool is starting a business in your grandma's garage. That's exactly how Manu and Michi began their Grillido project, after a barbecue when they realized that for health-conscious people, there wasn't much left to grill besides the familiar turkey steak. "There has to be more to it!" the two thought. And so, the idea for the first reduced-fat sausage in various varieties was born.
Instead of fat, the prototypes contained healthy and delicious ingredients like spinach, feta, sun-dried tomatoes, and even sushi ginger. They weren't just a hit with Grandma and Mom, but also with their friends and many other taste testers. Taking the plunge, they offered Grillido sausages to the first Christmas market visitors. It didn't take long to realize: Grillidos were a success. Grillido isn't your typical bratwurst sandwiched between two slices of bread, even if it might initially look like one. Not at all! Both women and athletes gradually became enamored with the sausage, and a true "Grillido craze" erupted. Thus, today's Webshop not long to wait.
Initially, the sausages were delivered to customers by a special sausage delivery service. Now, Deutsche Post handles that for the guys. This alone demonstrates the growing popularity of the "healthy sausage" concept. And so, Grillido is increasingly establishing itself as a healthy sausage provider. One thing that has remained constant, besides the unwavering commitment to high-quality ingredients, is that the founders' mothers still do the testing. Because let's be honest, who better to judge whether their "own son" is cooking up a tasty treat? 🙂 Time for a look at today's selection.
Grillido sausages – The product range
Grillido makes bratwurst (Grillido BBQ) and sport-style Landjäger (Grillido Sport). These sausages don't exactly have the reputation of being healthy or low-fat and rarely appear on the diet plans of athletes or people who want to eat consciously. Anyone familiar with Grillido quickly reconsiders this stereotype. A hallmark of their products is the significantly lower fat content of their sausages. This applies to both the various types of bratwurst and the to-go Sport sausages. It's not just the composition of the individual recipes that stands out, but also the high protein and low fat content.
The following varieties Sausages for frying or grilling (in a pack of 4) are offered. Each pack contains four sausages, each weighing 75 grams, meaning there are 300 grams of sausage per pack.
1.) „Gourmet Mix“ (more on this in the form of a tasting) with four different sausages in one package,
2.) „Capri Chicken“ – a tropical „summer limited edition“ made with chicken, sweet mango, sour lemon juice and spicy chili – only 8.8g fat/100g
3.) „Popeye“ – Chicken, spinach and fine feta cheese, low in calories and high in protein with only 71t fat and 171t protein
4.) „Asia“ chicken combined with bell peppers, peanuts, coconut milk and sushi ginger – only 81% fat
5.) „Smokey Beef“ – smoked beef combined with cheese and chili with a smoky-spicy note – only 91% fat, almost 90% meat content
6.) „Italico“ – high-quality pork with dried tomatoes and fine Parmesan cheese with 9.1g fat/100g
7.) „Veggi“ – Vegetable sausage with only 21% fat
8.) „Family Pack“ – mixed pack of bratwurst in four delicious flavors and fitness Landjäger in three protein-rich creations
The fat content of Grillido grill sausages ranges from 2.7g (veggie variety) to 9.5g (smoky beef variety), depending on the type, and is therefore significantly lower than the typical fat content of a standard grill or bratwurst. Grillido sport sausages are even better. These also come in different varieties, with two sausages per pack. Unlike the grill sausages, these can be eaten straight from the package without any preparation (perfect for on the go or as a snack). The sausages' approximately 501mg of protein and only 61mg of fat are sure to impress. Grillido Sport Sausage Varieties are available:
1.) „Beef & Chilli“ – premium beef with a touch of chili heat and select sea salt, an ideal „bacon substitute“ for, e.g., scrambled eggs – 50% Protein
2.) "Turkey & Curry" – Chicken, curry and sea salt, a chicken version of Landjäger sausage, great after a workout – 401g protein, 7.81g fat
3.) „Pork & Pepper“ – high-quality pork with paprika and spices – almost 501 tbsp protein, only 61 tbsp fat
4.) „Beef & Guarana“ – Beef Landjäger, lean smoked with guarana berry, cinnamon and a touch of chili heat – 100mg caffeine (!)
5.) „Beef & Açai“ – the superfood sausage among Grillido Sport sausages, South American açai berry, cherries, juniper berries – rich in vitamins, antioxidants, minerals
Let's get to the sausage! – Grillido sausage test
I first tried the Grillido "Gourmet Mix" (4 different sausages for €6.49). It's a mix of the "Popeye," "Asia," "Smokey Beef," and "Italico" sausages, making it a good cross-section for testing different types of bratwurst. Preparation is super easy, and you can choose whether to fire up the grill or a pan. I opted for the pan, heated it up, and fried the sausages over medium heat for 3-4 minutes per side until they were nicely browned. Out of the pan, then on toss – of course, it's entirely up to you what you like to eat with your sausage, or whether you even need anything with it at all.Recipe suggestions (You can find more information about Grillidos here) – and then I started trying them out. I had a summer salad with mine, partly because I wanted to focus on the sausage itself. (Grillido's own grilling sauces are also available online.) My favorites among the grilled sausages were the "Popeye" and "Asia" varieties. Firstly, because I really like the ingredients they contain, and secondly, because these two varieties stand out in my opinion for their "flavor diversity." Secondly, I find that chicken sausages taste better than other types – something I only discovered through Grillido. With a little effort, concentration, and by eating them "plain," you can even taste the individual ingredients, which isn't always easy with a sausage.
I put a two-pack of Grillido sports sausages in my bag and deliberately waited for a moment when I really craved them. When is that? Either after a workout (for the Turkey & Curry variety) or when hunger strikes and you need a small (but not heavy) snack. My favorites are definitely "Turkey & Curry" and "Beef & Chili," with the former definitely ending up in my shopping cart again. In my opinion, Grillido sausages are also about trying new things, finding a healthy alternative to fatty (brat) sausages, and realizing that there are many ways to eat a healthy and varied diet.
Hard facts and information
You can buy Grillido sausages online in their webshop or at 400 Rewe and Edeka supermarkets. Grillido Sport sausages are also now sold in over 300 gyms. And that's no coincidence, because with around 501 TDP 3T of protein, 61 TDP 3T of fat, and no additives whatsoever, this protein-packed sausage puts any protein bar to shame. A pack of Grillido Sport sausages costs between €3.49 and €3.99, while a pack of regular grill sausages costs between €5.49 and €6.99. Once you understand (and taste) the difference compared to "ordinary sausages," the investment is definitely worthwhile. I'm buying them again. Have you tried them yet?
