A day in Salzburg – First of all: Happy 4th Advent to you all! You should either use the day for a extensive brunch or a extensive breakfast Use it with your loved ones or even take a short trip. The destination – quite clearly – should include a good restaurant.

Gasthof Schloss Aigen

I recently did the latter and discovered a fantastic restaurant in enchanting Salzburg. The city itself, especially now with its Christmas atmosphere, boasts many different hotspots and places worth seeing. Before heading out for lunch, I strolled through the streets, stopping here and there. For example, I discovered the "Kaslöchl," which is completely new to me. It's the oldest and definitely the smallest cheese shop (7 square meters) in all of Salzburg. This over 110-year-old shop not only offers 100-150 different select cheeses, but also gourmet delicacies such as chocolate, jams, sauces, wines, and more. Once I was laden with truffle pecorino, parmesan, and Sachertorte for my friends at home, I continued on to my chosen restaurant. (By the way – even though some Salzburgers will probably disagree – I personally don't like the Sachertorte from the Hotel Sacher itself as much as, for example, the one from Café Fingerlos in the city center – also a tip from a true Salzburger.) Try it out sometime.

Wiener Schnitzel

I had my Austrian lunch in Gasthof Schloss Aigen. This was one of many Salzburg tips I received a while ago. Now I'd like to encourage you to check it out yourself. I had a Wiener Schnitzel with potatoes and cranberries (€21.80), and my companion had a Zwiebelrostbraten (onion roast beef) with potatoes (€23.80). The prices reflect the fact that they serve top-quality organic meat; otherwise, the menu features classic dishes and vegetarian options. My schnitzel was amazing, and I even skipped the potatoes a bit so I could finish my meat. The restaurant is rather chic and a bit pricey, but the interior is cozy and inviting. The service is very attentive and always eager to recommend what you'd like. Beforehand, we had two appetizers (a truffled chestnut cream soup and an autumnal garden salad with truffle vinaigrette, hazelnuts, and beets for €8.40 and €13.80, respectively). Inside, you completely forget you're in Austria and not deep in Bavaria. Rustic decor combined with chic details and stylish elements. Definitely worth a visit.

Salzburg Christmas Market

I would skip dessert if I were you – not because it wasn't delicious, but because the Salzburg Christmas Market, with its numerous stalls, delicacies, and treats, is currently very tempting. Alfons Schuhbeck also has a few stalls, so you can stock up on spices and other goodies. I had mulled wine, Christmas stollen, a chimney cake, and of course – from a special stall – some original Mozartkugeln (Mozart chocolates). Loaded down and completely full, I headed home with my haul – after a 1.5-hour drive, I was back. Don't miss the chance to stroll through the old town, wandering through the countless winding alleys and streets, peeking into shop windows here and there, and above all, visiting Salzburg's small shops. It's a city that impresses with its flair, friendliness, and excellent cuisine – it wasn't my first visit to Salzburg.
