Aparthotel Adagio Munich City | Cook and stay in your own apartment At the end of last year, more precisely in mid-December 2016, I set off with my bag packed for the Adagio Munich City Aparthotel. Why would I, a Munich resident, stay in a Munich hotel? And why with so many fresh ingredients for cooking in my luggage? Quite simply, I was on my way to this apartment hotel to test out one of its 27 apartments and 92 studios – each with a fully equipped kitchen – to cook and sleep there. The Adagio Munich City Aparthotel is quite special because it's one of the first with fully equipped apartment kitchens, just like at home. That probably explains the fresh ingredients in my bag. Together with my overnight companion, a.k.a. my "cooking assistant," I conjured up a pre-planned three-course meal to put the hotel kitchen to the test.

My, or rather our, task was clear: test the kitchen and find out if it allowed us to cook like we do at home…oh yes…and of course, cook something edible. 😉 When I entered the hotel room/apartment – I arrived a few hours earlier than my companion – I was immediately pleasantly surprised. I instantly felt like I was in my own small, private apartment. There was a cozy living area with a large (sleeper) sofa and coffee table, a separate extendable dining table, a desk and TV, as well as a serving hatch from the kitchenette. There was also a separate bedroom with a spacious double bed, a bathroom with a bathtub, and, of course, the separate kitchen. Admittedly, I'm not one of those people who quickly feel comfortable in unfamiliar spaces, new beds, or even kitchens, because I always need a little time to "arrive." So, hotels aren't always a positive "aha!" moment for me. That's why the first impression at Adagio is so important to me. However, I immediately had a feeling of "I'm at home and I'm going to have a relaxing evening".

About Adagio

My companion also arrived, and we were ready to go. Now, a few facts about the hotel before we roll up our sleeves and get cooking. Founded in France in 2007, this hotel chain currently has 100 properties with a total of 11,000 apartments in 11 different countries. The concept is the same everywhere: "temporary living" with precisely the feeling of being at home during your stay that I described. The properties are generally located in city centers and all offer two-room apartments, like the one I stayed in, as well as elegant studios, also equipped with kitchens. Included in the accommodation service are, of course, cleaning, a breakfast buffet, free Wi-Fi, fitness facilities, laundry service, and a 24/7 reception. It's obvious, then, that aparthotels are primarily used by business travelers for extended stays of weeks or even months. From this perspective, a fully equipped kitchen takes on a whole new significance. Eating out every day for a week in a strange city might be nice, but doing that for weeks on end after long workdays – perhaps not for everyone, and therefore not a bad idea.

My cooking evening: 3 courses in the apartment kitchen

The point of all this: Is it worth booking a hotel with a separate kitchen instead of a regular one, so you can cook something in your room if needed? Hotel stays usually involve travel, and traveling can be tiring. I like to retreat and prepare something for myself. In this case, it was – deliberately elaborate to push the kitchen to its limits 😉 – a rocket salad with sun-dried tomatoes and homemade dressing, pasta with a goat cheese and herb cream sauce, and quark cakes with applesauce for dessert. Don't worry – I'll spare you paragraph after paragraph and step-by-step descriptions of my cooking evening. The kitchen and its equipment were the focus, so you can watch the following video to see how it all went.

Another noteworthy feature is the degressive pricing structure. This means that the longer you stay, the cheaper the nightly rate becomes – sometimes as low as €401,003. By 2018, a total of 150 Adagio hotels with 15,000 apartments were planned – in Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. In Germany, you can stay in Munich (near the main train station, where I stayed), in Berlin (near Kurfürstendamm), and in Cologne (near the old town). As mentioned, all the hotels share a central location, close to public transportation and supermarkets (for shopping for ingredients ;-)). Incidentally, an Adagio aparthotel also opened in Frankfurt in autumn 2016.

Also of interest, especially for those on a tighter budget, is the "Adagio access" in Munich, which opened in 2015. This is the "low budget" version of an aparthotel and is currently only available in Munich. There, too, you can expect modern, stylish, and functionally furnished rooms at fair prices.

Now all that remains is for me to hope that you'll think of me, the Adagio Munich City Aparthotel (and my cooking skills) the next time you're looking for a hotel for yourself or your visitors in Munich. I was pleasantly surprised, positively surprised by the amenities and the resulting coziness, and would stay in an Adagio apartment or studio again anytime.
