The best Wiener Schnitzel in Munich Let's be honest. Who – assuming they're neither vegan nor vegetarian – doesn't like Wiener Schnitzel? I certainly don't know anyone. Okay, okay, let's ignore the usually not-so-healthy breading, then a beautifully thin, golden-breaded veal schnitzel isn't even that unhealthy, is it? (Let's also mentally skip the fries ;-)) In terms of taste, it's hard to beat in my opinion, and for a Bavarian, it's simply indispensable on the menu of any good Bavarian or Austrian restaurant or inn.
Admittedly, I probably eat this "little calorie bomb" a bit too often (30 times in the last 6 weeks alone for this list), but – depending on the restaurant – I simply can't resist as soon as I see "Viennese schnitzel made from veal with fried potatoes and cranberries." Usually, the culinary experience and the consumed calories are worth the small indulgence. Nevertheless, there are, of course, good, not-so-good, and even truly brilliant Wiener schnitzels.
Before we begin, a quick note for anyone who might not know: A Wiener Schnitzel is only a true "Wiener Schnitzel" if it's made from veal. A "Schnitzel Wiener Art" is a schnitzel made from pork. The price on the menu usually tells you whether it's pork or veal. The specific cut of veal used also plays a role. Both are typically served with fries, roast potatoes, or—depending on the season—asparagus or vegetables. Traditionally, lingonberries are served in a separate bowl, but in a simple Bavarian restaurant, they might just put a bottle of ketchup on the table.
I like it best the classic way: thinly pounded, thinly breaded, golden yellow, and not too greasy or dripping with fat, served with fried potatoes and cranberries. Depending on the quality of the meat and the cooking skills of the kitchen team, I'm often perfectly happy with just a schnitzel and cranberries on its own.
Since I naturally want to share my numerous Wiener Schnitzel experiences with you, you'll find my personal top list for "The best Wiener Schnitzel in Munich and the surrounding area" below.
