WALDFEE – Schwabing – international

Recently, my companion and I spontaneously decided to have dinner at the "Waldfee" restaurant on Occamstrasse. We had originally planned to go somewhere else – to Ruff's Burger – and I had even called ahead to reserve a table. However, when we arrived, we discovered it was a small, stand-up-only restaurant with a few seats outside. This felt too uncomfortable, so we moved a little further. Just 30 meters down Occamstrasse is the Waldfee restaurant, offering seating either directly outside around the corner or inside the small restaurant itself, which has 12 tables and a small bar near the entrance.

Before we begin, a word about the Forest Fairy: This isn't the place for guys' nights out. 😉 Pink walls, lots of shimmering glitter, silver-sprayed deer antlers and angel heads on the walls, and windowsills overloaded with decorations (see Photos), logs stacked in a wall recess, purple candles, grey seat cushions on the simple chairs matched to the wooden tables, daffodils on each table and many other details which, although they fit together and give a harmonious overall picture, are already close to being „kitschy“.

The service at Waldfee consists entirely of female staff – at least, we didn't notice any male assistance. We were greeted immediately upon entering by a friendly young waitress and, after explaining that we hadn't made a reservation, were allowed to choose one of the three or four remaining tables. The menus were quickly brought to us – in a gray plastic sleeve, all handwritten, with a wide selection of mixed and Austrian dishes. Whether soups, salads, schnitzel, ham and noodles, goat cheese salad, potato strudel, Schlutzkrapfen (filled pasta) with tomatoes, or various desserts such as Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake), Dampfnudeln (steamed dumplings), apricot dumplings, or Topfennockerl (quark dumplings) on a raspberry coulis – the variety is endless. My companion opted for the Wiener Schnitzel with fried potatoes and a small side salad for €14.80, while I chose the goat cheese salad with two large goat cheese medallions for €11.20. Both were reasonably priced. My companion's schnitzel was unfortunately a bit too thin, or rather, the breading was too thick, and the meat flavor didn't come through very well. The fried potatoes with the cranberry dip and the side salad were both very tasty. My goat cheese salad, while not exactly a highlight in terms of dressing and the simple type of lettuce, was perfectly fine in terms of taste, and the goat cheese was quite filling. As a starter, we were served a complimentary platter of fresh bread cut into small cubes with an herb dip. Very tasty bread and a great idea for a starter. Thumbs up! To drink, we chose a melon spritzer for €5.50 – very melon-y, probably made with syrup, similar to a Hugo with melon flavor 😉 – and a Russn for €3.60, which unfortunately wasn't mixed very well and tasted more like plain beer.

Overall, the service was very good and attentive – although our candle wasn't brought and lit until 20 minutes after we were seated – we were asked immediately after our empty plates were cleared if we would like dessert or a coffee to finish. Our main courses were served promptly and simultaneously after we ordered. While the ambiance is somewhat kitschy and pretentious, I didn't feel uncomfortable. (My companion disagreed and felt more like she was in a poorly decorated flower shop 😉 – as I said, not for men). We paid €39 including tip for two main courses and two drinks, which is reasonable by Munich standards. The service was friendly, but we didn't want to linger longer than necessary. The tables were occupied throughout our visit. Each table had a small acrylic holder displaying drinks – including my melon spritz. Those who don't like melon can order, for example, a cranberry or rhubarb spritz, or of course, a regular Hugo.

The Waldfee also offers lunch menus from Monday to Friday, 11:30 am to 2:30 pm – always including soup and a main course. For example, pasta or salad for €5.90, or schnitzel and fries or lumberjack steak for €7.50 – so the prices are perfectly reasonable. The Waldfee also offers typical Austrian specialties. You can order these here Check it out. The Waldfee is open Monday to Thursday and Sunday from 11 am to 11 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 1 am. The kitchen is open daily from 11 am to 11 pm. Since the restaurant is quite small, I would definitely recommend making a reservation to guarantee a table – in the summer, as mentioned, you can also sit comfortably outside.

If you're in Schwabing and fancy some good – nothing too fancy – food, then give Waldfee a try. It's sure to be a hit, and you'll definitely leave feeling satisfied and full. Card payments are accepted. Enjoy!.

I'll be back: Generally, yes. Delicious food at reasonable prices in Schwabing.
