Bapas on Leopoldstrasse

Bapas – Bavarian tapas in Schwabing – Envy is a feeling that only very rarely, if ever, arises within me, and if it does, it's only because the person sitting next to me might have something tastier or bigger on their plate than I do. Otherwise, life has taught me that envy exclusively brings about negative events. I do, however, feel it – admittedly – when I heard about the opening of "Bapas" on Leopoldstrasse in Schwabing. Why? Because as soon as I walked in, and certainly after looking at the menu and the concept, I knew that this had to be MY place. 😀 No, really! Bapas simply combines everything I love: Bavaria, Spain (in terms of the concept), tapas, a bar, food, lots of food, coziness, a good atmosphere, and good drinks. Isn't it awful that it wasn't me, but other people, who had the idea to open it?

Tapas: Mini meatloaf with quail egg and potato salad

What can you expect at Bapas in Schwabing?

Okay, nothing you can do about it, so I'll give it a try. The name "Bapas" (formerly Mauerer) stands for "Bavarian tapas" and thus only represents a small part of what you'll find in this cozy shop right on Leopoldstrasse. At the approximately 30 tables for two, four, and groups, they serve much more than "just" Bavarian tapas starting at 6:00 PM. More on that in a moment... They also offer breakfast, fresh cakes, coffee, drinks, and a varied lunch menu. The main attraction, and the reason my heart skipped a beat, was definitely the tapas, but the rest is also impressive. Breakfast is served from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, is clearly laid out on a clipboard menu (A5 size), and should have something to suit every breakfast lover. Whether it's fruit, bread basket, croissants, smoked salmon, egg dishes, omelette, muesli, fruit salad or even white sausages – all no problem and available from just €5.

Lunch menu and tapas

From 11:30 am, when breakfast is no longer an option, the lunch menu is available until 5:30 pm, offering "good, healthy, and quick" main courses at fair prices and of good quality. This means you can get dishes like summer salads, curries, soups, stews, and more starting at €5.50. There are always 10 lunch specials on offer: 5 are fixed (4 of which are salads), and 5 change regularly. One example is "Basti's Bapas Special" (€11.50), a filling pretzel sandwich with breaded chicken breast, grilled Serrano ham, a fried egg, and gratinated cheese, served with a small salad. Admittedly, I skipped all of that because my head (and stomach) was screaming "Ta-da!" These will be available from 6 PM and are sure to be a revolution for Munich, if not all of Bavaria. 😉

Amazing! You absolutely have to try the Käsespätzle.

Selection and evaluation of the chosen tapas

Bavarian tapas. Small portions, Bavarian classics. During my test, five of the (currently) 16 different varieties were in front of me, and I could have easily devoured them all myself – had my companion not eaten half of them. Even though there was schnitzel, Leberkäse (Bavarian meatloaf), Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle), salad, and steak tartare before me – not exactly light fare. Normally, it would be impossible to eat everything in one evening. But thanks to the brilliant tapas concept, it's possible, because the portions are small or just the right size. Add to that the fantastic taste of each individual dish, the excellent quality of the ingredients, and the sheer creativity across the entire range. Superb, I tell you. The schnitzel was beautifully tender, served golden yellow, and so delicious with the lukewarm potato salad that I would have happily ordered just five more. The salmon tartare was wonderfully fresh and well-seasoned, the mini Leberkäse with a small quail egg and potato salad was exactly as it should be in Bavaria, and the small salad was the perfect vitamin-packed side dish. I really enjoyed it and I'll definitely be back, if only for the other 12 tapas. (A special thanks to Sebastian Kubary and Daniel Schartner. Without them, this (sorry!…) awesome menu wouldn't even exist.).

Isar beer – just one of many drinks on the Bapas menu.

Beverage selection

The later the evening gets, the more worthwhile it becomes to take a look at the drinks menu, which features numerous gins, cocktails, aperitifs, and more. Your heart should skip a beat when you hear that no gin and tonic of your choice (…and they even have Fever-Tree…) costs more than €11 (…and the same goes for all vodkas, whiskeys, cocktails, spritzers, etc.). Alternatively, they offer white and red wines (from Germany, Austria, and Italy – by the glass and by the bottle), beer (draft Andechser on tap, or Tegernseer, Franziskaner, and Isar beer by the bottle), as well as tea, juices, soft drinks, and other beverages.

Information and personal conclusion

Inside, there are 78 seats in a cozy atmosphere, and another 60 on the sunny terrace. They serve top-quality food and drinks: the bread comes from the organic bakery Mauerer – which was previously located there and is still affiliated with Bapas – high-quality meat from the Burr butcher shop, and fresh cakes from the Müller bakery. The advantages are obvious: you can try a wide variety of dishes, everything is served quickly, and you can enjoy a quick lunch or tapas dinner if you're short on time. I'm not aware of any other Bavarian tapas restaurants in Munich, at least not with this concept, variety, and quality. I was really happy to discover Bapas and to be able to tell you about it. About 3-4 tapas alone will fill you up, depending on your appetite. Parking, as is typical in Munich, is only moderately convenient, but manageable in that area. Otherwise, hop on the U3/U6 and get off at Münchner Freiheit or Giselastraße – you're there! Don't miss the Leberkäse, the Schnitzel, and – very important! – the Kässpatzen, and take a look at the dishes. Super cool, and further proof that Bapas should really be mine. Oh yeah… no traditional dress required. 😉 Below you'll find pictures from my visit and additional food impressions from Bapas.

Hello Bianca,

I agree with you, the Bavarian tapas sound absolutely wonderful.
But the idea isn't exactly new. For several years, there was a place called "Magendratzerl" in the main train station. They also offered Bavarian tapas, which were initially quite delicious. Unfortunately, the quality declined significantly over the years. Now, a different restaurant occupies the space.
In any case, I will try the BaPas at the next opportunity.

    Hi Bridget!
Yes, I know that feeling, or rather, I knew it and also thought the quality suffered a lot. Unfortunately, nothing comparable ever came along, so I was very happy with the Bapas. 🙂

Hi,

That's a really cool idea, interpreting tapas in a different way. Basically, it's all about lots of little things, and doing them Bavarian-style is fantastic!

Keep up the good work with your blog 🙂

Greetings Basti

Mara

I think the concept is really great 😀 thanks for the tip
