BACKSTUBE WÜNSCHE – The „Marktplatzerl“ in Gaimersheim – Recently announced, the time had finally come and I set off for Gaimersheim to Marketplace of the Wünsche bakery. This was exciting for me because I had already read about the following in recent months: History, background, and philosophy the bakery had reported, as well as during a Production tour  was there. I recently told you about the Wish pretzels and what these entail (Read more here) This article focuses on the Gaimersheimer Marktplatzerl, which opened in April 2016. There, in addition to a wide selection of bread and baked goods, they also serve breakfast, lunch dishes, burgers, pasta, pizza, salads, and weekly changing daily specials, as well as great snacks, cakes, and pastries.

Backstube Wünsche Marktplatzerl – what's on offer?

The cozy Marktplatzerl has been around for about three years now. Once you arrive in Gaimersheim, you can hardly miss the restaurant/café, as it welcomes visitors in the entrance area of the spacious new flagship store of EDEKA Südbayern (Dr.-Ludwig-Kraus-Straße 8-10, 85080 Gaimersheim). To the left is the E-Center, stocked with 35,000 products, while to the right, the Marktplatzerl shines with a modern ambiance. I was curious to see what awaited me and wanted to experience both the atmosphere and the food. Contrary to what you might imagine, you're not "just sitting at the bakery" here, but rather in a comfortably furnished café with lots of wood, a glass facade letting in natural light, and a spacious terrace. The Marktplatzerl is one of three current restaurant locations of the Wünsche bakery. (The other two locations, the bakery restaurant "Sitt und Satt" and the "Café Mokka" in the Westpark Shopping Center, are also located in Gaimersheim and Ingolstadt, respectively.) The Marktplatzerl, divided into various seating areas including an outdoor area, offers space for 180 guests. The highest priority for all dishes is given to both The quality and freshness of the ingredients. The dishes are always freshly prepared on site – and you can taste the difference.

The burgers alone are worth a short trip…

Now let's take a look at the map: The menu features Bavarian classics such as Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle), pizzas (usually five different varieties), several pasta dishes (from €6.25), build-your-own salads (from €5.80), and large burgers (from €8.90; Burschenburger, Bayernburger, Madlburger, or veggie burger). The selection is therefore extensive and varied. The Marktplatzerl also includes a bakery with a classic selection of baked goods. There you'll find the full range of bread, rolls, pastries, cakes, slices, snacks, and homemade tarts. In addition, there are weekly changing lunch specials such as baked potato with salmon and herb quark, Käsespätzle with roasted onions, currywurst with potato wedges, pan-fried gyros with coleslaw and tzatziki, potato casserole, and much more. Vegans and vegetarians are also well catered for at the Marktplatzerl. From the vegetarian "Veggi-Burger" to Pasta Napoli or Aglio e oglio Peperonici, every vegetarian will be satisfied.

One of the breakfast options. Delicious, isn't it?

This is especially popular Breakfast offer at the Marktplatzerl. Six different breakfast options are offered, ranging in price from €5.45 to €19.90. The "Marktplatzerl" breakfast is a generous platter for two people with ham, salami, cheese, orange juice, a croissant, and much more. The "vegetarian breakfast" with cream cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, egg, and bread (€5.50) is also available, as is the "Smørrebroød" breakfast – a Scandinavian-style breakfast with smoked salmon. The absolute highlight for late risers, however, is the fact that you can have breakfast here from 6:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. (one hour before closing).

Coffee from our own roastery

Own coffee, organic eggs, etc.

Also worth mentioning, or rather, a reason to visit: the Wünsche bakery's own coffee roastery. Just to the left of the bakery counter in the Marktplatzerl (market square) is the small coffee roastery. They roast top-quality coffee there (around 400 kilos a week), and you can not only buy your coffee to take home but also regularly watch the roasting process. (Fixed dates are not yet available but are posted directly at the roastery.) They offer 100% Arabica and 80/20 Arabica/Robusta blends. So far, I've only tried the coffee at my favorite bakery with a slice of cake, but soon I'll certainly be getting my supply of freshly roasted beans for home from one of the approximately 15 bakeries that serve this coffee. It tastes best, of course, with a fruity slice of cake, for example, with berries. Learn more here.

Fancy something sweet in the morning? – No problem.

Other things worth knowing…

Now, a quick summary. I thoroughly enjoyed the salad I ordered on-site. My companions had pasta (Napoli) and pizza (vegetarian). If there's already a small queue when you visit – don't worry, the staff is efficient and you shouldn't have to wait more than a few minutes. One thing that's clear across the board: the portions are very generous and definitely filling. The opening hours of the Marktplatzerl are also a real highlight. It's open every day, Monday to Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 (kitchen until 7:00) and Sundays and public holidays from 7:30 to 5:00 (kitchen until 4:00). Another nice touch: lunch dishes and breakfasts are brought to your table via a pager system, and after ordering at the counter, you can comfortably take a seat at a table of your choice. Parking is free in the E-Center Gaimersheim parking lot. Be sure to stop by the Wünsche bakery at the Marktplatzerl and enjoy! I'm eager to hear what you think.
