Giesinger Bräu – Let's talk about love. Everyone knows that Munich residents love their beer. And since 2006 (or 2012, depending on the source), the Giesinger Bräu brewery has been making sure that the best place to experience it is in Giesing. But let's start from the beginning. Once a working-class neighborhood, now the birthplace of one of Munich's most famous beers: the Munich district of Giesing, which also lends its name to the beer "Giesinger Bräu." In three parts over the coming weeks, I'll tell you about the history, the beer, the local restaurants, and why there's no getting around the "Giesinger Durstbach" (Giesinger Thirst Stream). Here, beer means tradition, innovation, and down-to-earth values. This close connection to the customer, a.k.a. the enthusiastic beer drinker, piqued my curiosity and is reason enough for me to take a closer look.

A true Giesinger for over 10 years!

Giesinger Bräu and its history
„"A garage. Two men. A craving for beer." That's how the best stories begin, right? That's exactly how it started for managing director Steffen Marx, who, together with a friend, began brewing beer in 2006. But while most of us probably think of drinking beer, the two were already considering producing the coveted brew themselves. They had the necessary knowledge, and a vision was born: "Giesinger Bräu.".
After six years of brewing beer in their home garage – back then without their own taproom – they moved to Giesinger Berg in 2012, a location still occupied today. And so it was done! – For the first time, and finally with their own taproom, the Giesinger team moved lock, stock, and barrel, along with hops and malt, to Martin-Luther-Straße, into the area specially converted into a brewery for Giesinger Bräu. Since then, the various Giesinger Bräu beers have been brewed there. A total of 26 different varieties have been brewed in the hallowed halls of this traditional Bavarian brewery over the past few years. Between eight and ten different varieties of the fine Giesinger beer are always available for pickup or purchase on-site, or can be enjoyed in local restaurants (…more on that in part two).

The Munich-based company has since grown into several divisions. These include the brewery, the restaurant with its standing bar, and a second brewery is already in the planning stages and will be operational this year. Since its expansion in 2012, the brewery has been producing an impressive 12,000 hectoliters of beer annually, and the planned addition of the second brewery will significantly increase production. Big plans are in place, and further growth is inevitable. Currently, two batches of beer are brewed daily in Giesing – each taking eight hours to complete. Production is being scaled up, allowing for even greater output of the popular Giesinger beer.
The story has considerable charm and potential. What began as a friendship between two (beer-loving) friends soon grew to include five, and now 45 employees – and the number is still rising. The three trained brewers, the staff at the Giesinger farm shop, and all the other employees still pour their hearts and souls into the popular "Giesinger Bräusüpperl" – and you can taste it. (Interestingly, many of the employees actually come from Giesing or have even made it their home. Cool, right?)

Tradition and innovation are skillfully combined at Giesinger Bräu.
Also worth mentioning: Although the traditional brewery supplies over 100 retail outlets with the coveted Giesinger Bräu, you and anyone else can also stroll into the courtyard and buy a single bottle of your favorite variety. That's true down-to-earthness, in my opinion. Since Giesinger Bräu is not only traditional but also innovative, and remains so, the "liquid menu" includes not only well-known beer classics, such as the ever-popular "Giesinger Bräu – Erhellung," but also four innovative craft beers and other specialties. I'll go into detail about the various Giesinger beers in the third part of this article trilogy. Next week, we'll first head to the Giesinger Bräu pub for a meal, and of course, there will be plenty of tasting. One thing I can say about the beers right now: All Giesinger Bräu beers are naturally cloudy and, of course, brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law. Even after my first visit to the brewery, it was clear to me: anyone who builds a successful business from a garage doesn't just rest on their laurels, but keeps pushing forward. It remains exciting. Stay tuned.
