Restaurant Blauer Bock | Weinviertel in your neighborhood | Restaurant number 1 of 14 – In a recent Facebook post I previously reported that from June 1st to 30th, 2016, Austria's largest wine-growing region, the Weinviertel, would be showcased in 14 selected restaurants. During this period, I had the wonderful task of individually reviewing these 14 restaurants and reporting on them for you. A few days ago, the 30-day campaign "Weinviertel in Your Neighborhood" kicked off, starting at the first of the fourteen restaurants: Restaurant Blauer Bock.
But before I go into detail and tell you about the "Blauer Bock" restaurant, I'd like to talk a little about the campaign and give you an overview. What exactly can you expect at each restaurant? What's the campaign all about? And where else can you buy the wines besides the restaurants?

„Weinviertel in your neighborhood“ – What can you expect?
The innovative "Weinviertel in Your Neighborhood" culinary campaign has a lot in store for you. Both Munich's top restaurants and trendy wine bars will be offering regional wines from the Weinviertel region in June 2016. Peppery Grüner Veltliner, full-bodied Weinviertel DAC Reserves, fragrant Muscats, and fruity Zweigelt or Pinot Blanc from the Weinviertel will be available by the glass at these 14 restaurants. To help you easily identify participating restaurants, pubs, and bars, they are marked with orange Weinviertel deck chairs at their entrances.

Besides the main grape variety, Grüner Veltliner, a wide variety of white wine grapes thrive in the Weinviertel region, including Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscat. Zweigelt is among the most important red wine grapes. The most typical wine of the Weinviertel is Grüner Veltliner, designated Weinviertel DAC, with a light to greenish-yellow color and a peppery, spicy, and delicately fruity flavor. So, if you enjoy dry, spicy-fruity wines, you can look forward to a wonderful taste experience with Weinviertel DAC, especially when paired with fine cuisine. (The DAC designation, by the way, stands for regionally typical flavor and, of course, guaranteed origin.) What makes Grüner Veltliner Weinviertel DAC so special is that it effortlessly proves to be an ideal accompaniment to everything from crispy Wiener Schnitzel and relaxed barbecues to light asparagus dishes. Some restaurants also offer Grüner Veltliner as a full-bodied Weinviertel DAC Reserve, which pairs perfectly with Asian and fusion cuisine. As a rule of thumb: Where it says Weinviertel DAC, it contains the spicy and fruity Grüner Veltliner.
The aim of this initiative and the wine tasting by the glass is, of course, to showcase the diversity of the Austrian Weinviertel region in Munich and to send every wine enthusiast and connoisseur in the city on a journey of discovery. At the same time, the partnership between winemakers, wine merchants – several of whom will also be offering Weinviertel wines in June – and restaurateurs will be strengthened. Each restaurant will feature a selection of their own wines on its menu, giving you the opportunity to taste them and perhaps discover a side of Austrian wine that you hadn't yet explored.

The restaurant „Blauer Bock“
Details about the Blauer Bock restaurant
Number one in my 14-part test series was the Blauer Bock restaurant at Sebastiansplatz in Munich. This restaurant, run by Hans Jörg Bachmeier and Stefan Grosse, has been located at the Viktualienmarkt for over 10 years and offers culinary delights in the upper price range. The menu features two- to five-course set menus (from €19 for a two-course meal with soup to €74 for a five-course meal), as well as various appetizers, intermediate and main courses, and desserts. There is also a small selection of classic dishes, such as Caesar salad, meatballs, or braised beef shoulder, and for meat lovers, US beef sirloin (€38) or roast beef for two (€78). The wine list consists almost exclusively of wines from European wine-growing regions.

I enjoyed a four-course meal. For a starter, I had an asparagus salad with a baked egg (fantastic and unlike anything I'd ever had before!), radishes, and sultanas for €17 (ideal with mature and young wines). This was followed by a portion of monkfish with two kinds of young peas and mint for €36 (peas are making a comeback and are perfect with fish! | ideal with Muscatel and Sauvignon Blanc). For my main course, I savored tender saddle of spring venison with turnips, spaetzle, and cranberries for €32 (a Weinviertel DAC Reserve pairs perfectly with this!). I rounded it all off with a cheese selection (Camembert, Fourme d'Ambert, and aged Gouda). Naturally, my meals were accompanied by suitable wines from the Weinviertel region of Austria. Below, I've listed the wines you can order with your meals there in the coming weeks, in addition to the regular wine list.

The menu is available in German and English. The service is competent, attentive, and always discreet, keeping a watchful eye on guests at their tables. The restaurant's ambiance is exceptionally cozy and pleasant, and you almost forget that you're right next to the bustling Viktualienmarkt. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM and from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. (Closed Sundays, Mondays, and public holidays.) Card payments (EC card, Amex, and Maestro) are accepted. Parking is available in the Schrannenhalle parking garage or, with a bit of luck, in the side streets. Reservations are highly recommended.
