Grano is a very small and unassuming – but definitely worth mentioning – pizzeria on Sebastiansplatz in Munich. It's more of a hidden gem, as you'd probably just walk on by if you were strolling past. Neither its discreet "Café Pizzeria" sign nor its interior particularly stands out or impresses – until you order.
Upon entering, Grano is not particularly impressive: very small, very cramped, and oddly, somewhat haphazardly, and haphazardly furnished. However, it's still cozy and perfect for people who simply want to enjoy good pizza at affordable prices. That's pretty much all Grano offers: a small, manageable selection of different pizzas (e.g., with mushrooms, Gorgonzola, Parma ham, or salami, etc.), a few pasta dishes, and other small plates. My companion chose a pizza with Parma ham, while I opted for the mozzarella and tomato pizza, which was served with bread in a small bowl. The pizzas aren't groundbreaking, but there's nothing to complain about. The dough is airy, the toppings are generous, and the size and price are reasonable. (A Margherita pizza, for example, is a mere €4.90!)
At Grano, if you're interested, you can even watch your pizza being prepared – everything happens in a very small space; the small bar where the ordered drinks are prepared is located in the narrow, moderately noisy dining area. In terms of ambience, Grano isn't really anything special, but it fits the concept and flair of the restaurant – simple and rather chill: a very simply designed bar area with full shelves of glasses on the walls and direct access to the small kitchen, yellow and white checkered tablecloths on the tables and pinup girls on the walls.
The service was more casual and relaxed than professional and trained. 😉 But overall, the service was okay, and despite having to ask twice exactly what we wanted to eat, we felt we were served politely. Although all the other small tables were occupied, we didn't have to wait too long for our food to arrive and we could start eating – the knives were a bit poor, if not completely unusable!
Hugo, Spritz, Americano, etc. are offered as drinks in the summer (I'm not sure about winter) in addition to the usual standard beverages. White and red wine are also available – if you're not too picky. In the summer, there are also a few shady tables in front of the restaurant in the pedestrian zone at Sebastiansplatz. I haven't sat there myself yet, but it always looked inviting when I walked by – albeit very sparsely furnished and more like garden furniture.
Card payments are not accepted at Grano. We hadn't made a reservation when we visited – but I don't know if that's even possible. If you don't have overly high expectations, or if a simple, good pizza is all you need, give it a try! Enjoy!
I'll be back: Yes, if I don't need a lot of ambiance, glitz and glamour, but still want to enjoy good pizza.
