A while ago, when the sun was still shining a bit more, even a city dweller like me longed for some nature, mountains, water, and fresh country air. So I decided to visit a restaurant in Münsing – the Gasthaus Fischerrosl. It might not sound exciting at first, but it was excellent. That's why I want to tell you about it. I found out about the restaurant because a friend from Starnberg recommended it. I was craving Bavarian food, especially fish, so I checked out the menu online beforehand and it looked good, and before I knew it, I was in the car heading south. Before you read on: This is all about fish, fish, fish, and the occasional pumpkin, pasta, or vegetarian option. Of course, the fish is the best thing at the Fischerrosl. 🙂
As mentioned, it was sunny during our visit, so there was nothing to prevent us from getting a seat on the sunny terrace. It's quite narrow and runs along the front of the building, with about seven or eight tables set up in front of the building. You can see it in the photos. If you'd prefer absolute peace and quiet with a view of the greenery, a terrace seat at Fischerrosl isn't for you, as the restaurant is right on the street and even at a traffic light, so quite a few cars stop, start, and drive by. But that wasn't important to me; the sun was shining beautifully on the tables, and we opted for a cozy table for four in the sun. The tables were adorned with roses in elegant vases, the menus, bound in green covers, were promptly brought to us by a busy but friendly server, and overall, I immediately felt at ease.
As for the interior ambiance – I went in, of course, to get a feel for it – you can take a look at the pictures and expect a typical, rustic Bavarian restaurant. I particularly like that the restrooms are separate for men and women, but the tiny handwashing sink is located outside the toilets, so you wash your hands in the anteroom of the inn. Just like in the old days. Inside, the Gasthaus Fischerrosl is bright and welcoming, divided into separate dining areas. It's definitely possible to sit together comfortably in a great atmosphere, which is probably more interesting to you than the sunny terrace, since winter will be around for a few months and you'd much rather warm up in the cozy restaurant.
As mentioned, I had already glanced at the menu online beforehand, but I still took a look at the printed menu and was delighted to find an exceptionally extensive pumpkin menu alongside the usual standard menu. From pumpkin cream soup with lemongrass and ginger, a dollop of whipped cream, roasted pumpkin seeds, and pumpkin seed oil (€6.90, which we shared as a starter), to three kinds of pumpkin risotto with scampi (€12.90), to beef tenderloin with a pumpkin, hazelnut, and herb crust and a trio of pumpkin ragout (€20.90). The selection of dishes created with different pumpkin varieties is endless. So many choices, so much to decide! This worked out quite well here, as the regular menu also offered plenty of delicious options. There's an endless selection of fish dishes (for example, on the specials menu), such as a steak of redfish in herb butter with a colorful mixed salad and bread (€18.90), sea bream sautéed in herb butter with Mediterranean vegetables and buttered rice (€20.90 – which is what I ordered), or a portion of mussels with julienned vegetables cooked in tomato sauce (€17.90). Those who don't like pumpkin or fish are still welcome. Tagliatelle with wild mushrooms and various meat dishes (between €19.90 and €25.90) are also on the menu. Vegetarians are equally well catered for: with four different dishes currently available between €13.90 and €15.90, there's plenty of variety. Tempting options include a curry-turmeric vegetable strudel, mixed green salads with falafel, peanut Thai curry, or tagliatelle agio e olio with tomatoes and mushrooms. As mentioned, the focus is clearly on the selection of fish dishes. For example, the "Büsumer Fischpfanderl" with shrimp, fillets of fine fish, and vegetables with lobster sauce (for €25.90) sounded very appealing. In short: If you love fish – and are willing to drive a bit – then Gasthaus Fischerrosl is the place for you.
We opted for still water and a Hugo (0.2l / €6.90). Then the aforementioned soup arrived, which was truly excellent. For a moment, I was slightly disappointed that I had agreed to the "sharing deal." 😉 The portion was also fair and satisfying, and not too large. The empty plate was quickly cleared, and the two main courses (sea bream for me and a trio of pumpkin risotto) didn't take long to arrive. The pictures show how beautifully everything was presented, and it tasted just as good. My sea bream was incredibly tender, buttery soft, and absolutely delicious. Of course, it was far too much for me, so my companion had to help. I then tried a little of hers and was equally impressed. The prices certainly reflect the restaurant's proximity to Starnberg, indicating that the food is exquisite and of high quality, and that it has undoubtedly made a name for itself with its excellent fish. For example, Senta Berger was also sitting on the terrace during our visit – but she was eating a salad. 🙂 The Gasthaus Fischerrosl is definitely worth a visit, and if you're not looking for a classic Bavarian restaurant with roast pork, sauerbraten, Kaiserschmarren, and the like, but still appreciate a rural, Bavarian atmosphere and want to get out of the way a bit, then the Fischerrosl is perfect for you.
It's best to make a reservation so you don't have to wait. Card payment is of course possible. We paid €65 including tip for a bottle of water, a Hugo (a cocktail), pumpkin soup, and two main courses with fish/scampi. Considering the location and the quality of the food, this was quite reasonable. The waitress, dressed in a dirndl, seemed a bit too stressed for the "quiet" setting, but she became increasingly friendly towards the end. I can highly recommend a visit. It's fun, the food is delicious, and you'll leave feeling satisfied after a mini-vacation. While you won't see a panoramic view of the Bavarian Alps, nor will you see any mooing kitchens or rattling tractors, Seeshaupt and the lake are just a stone's throw away – perfect for a post-meal stroll.
I'll be back: Definitely great fish. And being surrounded by nature is good for you too.
