Burgers for MunichThe restaurant "meat in bun" is a burger joint located on Kapuzinerstraße, which opened on June 1st of this year. While there are already many burger restaurants in Munich, I was particularly drawn to the relatively new "meat in bun" because, as they say, not all burgers are created equal, so I recently stopped by to try it out. The restaurant is conveniently located on the corner of Kapuzinerstraße and Maistraße, and its four inviting tables set up outside along the building's facade create a welcoming atmosphere. High windows create a bright dining room, and a counter displays the menu and the burgers you can choose from. There are ten different burgers in total, all of which can also be ordered in a vegetarian version. You can also choose between whole-wheat bread or a regular white bread, similar in texture to ciabatta and baked to a light crust.
The burger selection is manageable, yet well-balanced. The owner clearly made sure there was something for everyone when putting together the menu, featuring burger combinations with ingredients from various countries and nations. All ten burgers have creative names and their flavors are perfectly matched to their respective ingredients. Whether it's the "Kissing Mandy," which I chose, the "Burning Diego" with tomato relish, triple cheddar, onions, mustard, lettuce, and beefsteak tomatoes, or the "Charming Luigi" with fresh pesto, buffalo mozzarella, onions, basil, lettuce, and beefsteak tomatoes – all burgers are prepared with great care. Prices range from €6.40 to a maximum of €12.40, with the latter price point being reached for the "Bigger Sam" (approximately 420 grams) with triple cheddar, tomato, onions, lettuce, and beefsteak tomatoes. There's nothing to complain about regarding the prices here anyway, and the surcharge of €0.50 for wholemeal bread instead of white bread is justified in my eyes.
Even though the name "meat in bun" suggests just meat in a bun, you can expect more than just a simple burger here. The meat, delivered fresh daily, is seasoned by the meat in bun team themselves, ensuring it's prepared and fried exactly as it should be for the perfect burger. The accompanying potato wedges, also made by the team, are sliced whole potatoes with the skin on, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. During my visit, I naturally tried them and was quite impressed, as there's a clear difference in taste compared to the usual potato wedges you find in restaurants. At "meat in bun," the potato wedges can also be ordered individually – without a burger – (for €2.40) or as a mixed platter (for €5.90) together with the equally homemade and freshly breaded chicken nuggets (€3.90 each) and onion rings (€2.40 each).
Meat in Bun itself is comfortably furnished and boasts a pleasant atmosphere. Upon entering, you immediately see the light wood wall with the huge burger logo; the tall, bright windows feature black leather sills; light wood tables and black and yellow chairs provide seating for eating your burger; and overall, I quickly felt at ease in the place.
Now to my burger, as I mentioned, the "Kissing Mandy" with feta cheese, fresh fig mustard, zucchini, bell peppers, olives, mushrooms, onions, lettuce, and tomatoes (for €7.90). There's not much to say about it, really: it was delicious, very fresh, and warm; the bread had a crisp bite but was still soft, and the ingredients layered between the burger buns were also excellent. photo You can see that they didn't skimp on the feta cheese and other toppings. So you'll definitely be full. I ate my burger around noon and didn't get hungry again until the evening. I couldn't even finish the potato wedges because I simply didn't have any more room, which was a shame since I still had so much of the five different homemade and preservative-free sauces and dips (mayo, ketchup, BBQ, garlic, and fig mustard). My favorite was definitely the combination of fig mustard and potato wedge, or garlic and potato wedge, although not exactly suitable for a first date. 😉 Oh yes, you can also customize your burger with jalapenos, BBQ sauce, fried onions, an organic fried egg, extra cheese, or extra meat (all between €0.70 and €2.50). Something else I noticed about my burger after eating it: I didn't feel totally tired and exhausted, or like my stomach was full. Sure, I was stuffed, but I didn't experience the famous "schnitzel coma" or, in this case, burger coma.
The lunchtime special at "meat in bun" is also quite attractive. For the regular burger price, you can choose a free side dish, salad, or drink. Cool, right? That means you can get a satisfying lunch for just €6.90 (for the Everybody's Darling burger) – and stay until the evening, because the burger is really filling. The lunchtime special is available Monday to Friday from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm. The friendly burger joint has seating for about 25 guests inside. Outside, at the tables mentioned above, there's room for another 16 hungry burger fans. The owner is currently working on further developing his already implemented concept for delivering his delicious burgers, including an online shop for ordering them. This means you can enjoy your tasty meat in bun burgers at home on the sofa if you're ever too lazy to go out. For those of you with a sweet tooth: Soon, in addition to the cookies, there will be another delicious dessert available on site – freshly made rice pudding with red berry compote. Mmmh! I don't know about you, but there's always room for sugar. 😉
Interesting for the vegans among you: They're already working on a vegan burger option, so it shouldn't be long before you can enjoy delicious burgers here too. The same goes for lactose-intolerant customers – a burger option will soon be available for you as well. I'm really looking forward to all the new additions and have definitely found a burger joint worth visiting in meat in bun. I probably don't need to mention all the usual Munich burger places here, but I'd like to encourage you to try something new, like meat in bun. The burger joint is open Monday to Thursday from 11:30 am to 10:00 pm, an hour later on Fridays, and on weekends from 2:00 pm to 11:00 pm (Saturdays) and 10:00 pm (Sundays). Card payments are accepted, the menu is available as a flyer, and the friendly service further enhances the pleasant atmosphere at meat in bun. Give it a try – I can assure you'll love it. Feel free to take a look at the different burger variations in the image gallery; you'll surely get a craving for one right away….
I'll be back: Yes. Really great burgers at very fair prices.
