Species-appropriate Munich – Since there are certain issues one simply shouldn't ignore, I've made an exception in this case and allowed a guest post, or rather an important appeal, from Tollwood Munich on my website. Do me, yourselves, Tollwood, and especially the animals a favor and take five minutes to read it and stand up for species-appropriate animal husbandry, because…now It's all or nothing! What's it about? Today we want to encourage you to join us in the fight for a "humane Munich"! Humane animal husbandry has long been a major focus for the Tollwood Festival. As a logical consequence of this commitment, Tollwood GmbH launched the "Humane Munich" action alliance in May 2015.
What's the point of all this? The aim of the alliance is for the state capital Munich to commit itself by city council resolution to only using or permitting products within its sphere of influence that demonstrably come from species-appropriate animal husbandry: This would apply to all municipal canteens, all municipal facilities – hospitals, cultural institutions, etc. – all municipal receptions as well as public events where the city of Munich is the host, e.g. the city's founding festival, the Auer Dulten, the Christmas market and the Oktoberfest.

Do the people of Munich want it? Yes! And it's also affordable! A recent study shows this. Appraise from „a’verdis“. A TNS Emnid survey commissioned by Tollwood in autumn 2014 also revealed that 75 percent of Munich's residents would welcome such a commitment by the city, and 85 percent are prepared to pay the additional cost required. We call on all Munich residents: Sign and support our alliance so that we can put pressure on Munich's city politics!
The alliance currently boasts over 27,000 supporters. Among them are well-known figures from the cultural scene such as Konstantin Wecker and comedian Michael Mittermeier. Former mayor Christian Ude and philosopher Julian Nida-Rümelin are also part of the group, along with many others. Companies like Hofpfisterei and Münchner Kindl mustard, as well as associations such as the Bavarian State Association for Organic Farming, Slow Food Munich, the Munich Senior Citizens' Advisory Board, and PROVIEH, are also involved.
How do we get involved with politics? Currently, two city council motions are pending. The ÖDP/DIE LINKE and Bündnis 90/DIE GRÜNEN parties have submitted a motion to the city council calling on the state capital to prohibit the sale of any products from industrial intensive animal farming within its jurisdiction. The city council will make a decision on this matter in spring 2016.
That's why we need your vote now! Then we can present the mayor with a nice bundle full of thousands of signatures from committed Munich residents just before the decision is made!

Background – Why factory farming is so bad
Industrial intensive animal farming is hazardous to health, cruel to animals, socially unjust, and environmentally damaging. Family farms are increasingly losing the battle against factory farms.
– Factory farming is hazardous to health: Industrial animal farming facilities are breeding grounds for health-threatening, multi-resistant germs against which antibiotics are no longer effective. And the trend is increasing.
Factory farming is cruel: The vast majority of our farm animals lead miserable, short, and suffering lives in industrial intensive animal farming. As recently as March 2015, the Scientific Advisory Board for Agricultural Policy submitted an expert report to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture sharply criticizing livestock farming in Germany: Current husbandry conditions are "not sustainable." There are significant shortcomings, especially in the area of animal welfare, but also in environmental protection.
– Factory farming is environmentally damaging: One third of the groundwater in Bavaria is in poor condition: the main reason is the high nitrate pollution from agricultural manure – a substance that can be converted into carcinogenic nitrite in the body.
– Factory farming is antisocial: Germany has long since transformed into the "cheap slaughterhouse of Europe." Hourly wages between 3 and 5 euros are not uncommon. This applies to people working in agricultural production and processing. They deserve a living and working environment that allows them to treat animals and the environment with respect – and in which humans are also treated respectfully as employees.
What else can I do? To counteract factory farming, you can start by eating less meat and thus contribute to reducing the high meat consumption in Germany. If you do decide to eat meat, conscious shopping is advisable. Where does the meat come from? Is it certified organic or does it meet the animal welfare criteria of Neuland? Questioning the origin of products is an important step towards ensuring that animals are kept in species-appropriate conditions.
