Weinviertel in your neighborhood 2017 – The "Weinviertel in Your Neighborhood" campaign in Munich is still running for a few more days. For those interested in getting started and reading my three previous reviews (Weinviertel in Your Neighborhood 2017 & Test 1: Neo-Brasserie Hoiz, Test 2: To the golden calf, Test 3: El GauchoAnyone who missed it can read about it here. Now, the fourth and final test within this year's "Weinviertel in Your Neighborhood" campaign was on my agenda. A total of 16 restaurants are participating, where you can discover a wide variety of wines from the Austrian Weinviertel region until the end of June. One of these restaurants is the Insel Mühle in Untermenzing. Hotel, restaurant, beer garden, and pure relaxation all in one place. And, of course, Weinviertel wines. I stopped by as part of the campaign, had a light meal, and enjoyed a glass of Grüner Veltliner.

My fourth test: The Insel Mühle in Untermenzing
The family-run Insel Mühle in Untermenzing is located a little further out, surrounded by nature, but is easily and conveniently accessible by car. Once I arrived in the hotel's private parking lot and looked around, I immediately felt at ease. You're instantly enveloped in the feeling of having landed on your own private sanctuary, complete with an inviting hotel, restaurant, terrace, river, and beer garden. And that's exactly what it is: The Insel Mühle comprises the hotel with its 37 rooms, as well as the adjoining "Alte Mühle" restaurant (for up to 70 guests), located within the hotel, complete with a terrace (for another 30 guests), seating right by the water, and a view of the adjacent Insel Mühle beer garden on the Würm River, where – as is typical for a Bavarian beer garden – you can bring your own snacks. Idyllic scenery as far as the eye can see.

Upon entering, the feeling of well-being continues: lots of wood, solid wooden beam ceilings, and a Bavarian atmosphere wherever you look. The view from the windows overlooks the beer garden, the terrace with the Würm River, and the beer garden adjoining the park – simply wonderful. I opted for a set corner table inside and glanced at the menu. Before even considering the food, I learned about the history of the Inselmühle (Island Mill). Its history dates back to 1500, and by 1910 it was already a bourgeois inn. Now, the "Alte Mühle" (Old Mill) restaurant is divided into a restaurant, an Augustiner beer garden (with Augustiner beer served from wooden barrels on Sundays when the weather is nice!), a hotel bar, and additional rooms for events, conferences, and celebrations for up to 120 people.
The menu features a variety of appetizers (from €11), soups (from €9), and intermediate and main courses (from €15 and €24, respectively). It also includes Insel Mühle classics such as roast beef with rosemary potatoes and remoulade sauce (from €14), Bavarian beef tartare (from €16), Wiener Schnitzel with roasted potatoes (€26), and boiled veal with root vegetables and potatoes (€26). Last but not least, the menu lists three different desserts (from €9) and wine pairings. The separate lunch menu changes regularly and always includes a chef's recommendation. The two-course menu is €25, the three-course menu is €32, and the four-course menu is €45. À la carte dishes are also available at lunchtime (from €9). Those who want to treat themselves can choose the beef fillet with foie gras, black walnuts, two kinds of kohlrabi and sugar snap peas for €54 or the fried monkfish with fennel, beans, sugar snap peas and blood orange vinaigrette (for €28).
When I asked what one absolutely had to try, the answer came back without hesitation: "Wiener Schnitzel!" For me, that was clearly another reason to visit Insel Mühle and perhaps sample a wine or two. On this visit, I opted for the large roast beef (€20) and chose a glass of Grüner Veltliner from the Weinviertel region to accompany it. Time to take a look at the separate wine list.

The Weinviertel wines at Insel Mühle
The wine list at the Inselmühle, or rather the "Alter Mühle" restaurant, features 176 selections – eight open white wines, eight open red wines, and one open rosé. Wines from Germany, Italy, France, and of course, Austria are on the list. The latter, or rather three of them, were naturally my focus: the wines from the Weinviertel region. The great thing is that the Weinviertel wines on the list remain available even after the end of July, so you can take your time with your visit. You can choose from the following wines. Perhaps you can even make it in June, as they are also available by the glass then.
1.) 2016 Gemischter Satz, Weingut Zuschmann
2.) 2016 Lust und Laune Rosé, Weingut Zill
3.) 2015 Grüner Veltliner Haidviertel DAC, Weingut Pfaffl
In this case, I only tried one of the three wines, as I was already familiar with the other two, and the Grüner Veltliner from the Pfaffl winery appealed to me most with my chosen main course. The bright, pale yellow Grüner Veltliner I selected is an ideal summer wine and pairs perfectly not only with richer meats but also with fish and light salads. On the palate, the Veltliner impresses with a hint of pepper, rounded off with notes of mandarin and orange, and boasts a crisp, juicy body. It is produced from approximately 30-year-old vines and, after about five months of aging in stainless steel tanks, is bottled in Burgundy-style bottles. For me, it was a successful food pairing and the perfect choice.
Of course, you'll receive expert advice on-site if you need help choosing the right wine. Feel free to explore the selection. Unlike other restaurants, Inselmühle is happy to offer blind tastings at your table, where they'll pour you a sample of what you think you might like. You simply tell them what kind of wine you prefer or what you'd like to eat, and the perfect wine will be poured into your glass without you even seeing the bottle or label. Many have discovered their new favorite wine this way. And who knows, perhaps one of the three Weinviertel wines will soon become one of your new favorites. With the selection of Weinviertel wines at Inselmühle, you'll also find a great mix. The rosé, for example, from the Zill winery, is also ideal as a starter or aperitif for a wonderful evening at Inselmühle.

My conclusion
If you enjoy being outdoors and appreciate a bit of peace and quiet, this is the perfect place for you. The location is simply unique, and combined with the high-quality international-regional cuisine of the "Alte Mühle" restaurant, it's a real insider tip. I loved the atmosphere and ambiance, and the service was attentive and quick at the table, whether it was clearing dishes or refilling drinks. My roast beef was wonderful and ideal for a hot summer day like the one I visited the Inselmühle. It's definitely worth a visit, whether by bike or car. However, considering that you absolutely must try the Weinviertel wines (which, as mentioned, are also possible after the end of June), I recommend not coming by car and instead taking a walk through the surrounding green countryside afterward. Thanks to the "Weinviertel in Your Neighborhood 2017" feature, the Inselmühle and the "Alte Mühle" restaurant are a newly discovered hotspot for me.

Many Munich wine merchants are also participating again this year, offering a wide range of great wines for your home – in case you can't get enough of a particular wine in a restaurant (Dealer listDuring the event, wines from the Weinviertel DAC region – the authentic, peppery, spicy, and delicately fruity Grüner Veltliner – as well as Pinot Blanc, Muscat, Frühroter Veltliner, and sparkling wine from local producers will be served. Wines of diverse styles and a good price-to-quality ratio will be available, offering something for every palate.
