JAPANESE BRUNCH at Matsuhisa Munich – Due to my job and my website, I very rarely have the time to visit a restaurant more than once in a private setting – no matter how much I enjoy it. This Sunday, January 28, 2018, I'll be attending the Japanese brunch at Matsuhisa Munich, the Japanese-Peruvian gourmet restaurant of the Mandarin Oriental, for the third time.
Back then, in November 2015, I already reported on the reopening of the luxury hotel in Munich (Read more about Matsuhisa Munich) and have since considered Matsuhisa Munich one of my absolute favorites for upscale Asian cuisine. They serve only the finest fish and seafood, as well as exceptionally refined dishes with a Japanese-Peruvian influence.
One of my personal Matsuhisa highlights is the restaurant's Sunday brunch, launched at the end of 2017. Originally, it was supposed to end after a few weeks with the New Year's brunch on January 1st, 2018. Now, due to its immense popularity, it's back for a second round, and from now on, you can enjoy a Japanese-Peruvian brunch once a month – a unique experience currently unavailable anywhere else in Munich.
Japanese brunch at Matsuhisa Munich – what can you expect?
For brunch at Matsuhisa Munich, a specially created menu is presented, filled with a variety of Japanese-Peruvian classics and diverse breakfast specialties. You choose your favorites freely and in whatever order suits you best. The friendly staff will regularly visit your table for two or group, checking on your well-being and, of course, answering any questions you may have about the individual dishes. Each brunch includes a glass of champagne per person, as well as water, tea, and coffee. The perfect finishing touch for families: If you come with your children, they will be looked after in the "Matsuhisa Kid's Club" in the adjacent banquet rooms while you enjoy your brunch. Children aged six and older can dine with you at a reduced rate.
When does the brunch take place? – The dates
The Japanese-Peruvian Sunday brunch takes place on the last Sunday of each month from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. The next dates are January 28th, February 25th, March 25th, April 1st (Easter Sunday brunch), and April 29th. Reservations are essential, and please book your date as soon as possible, as they are very popular. You can also find me there for brunch on January 28th, which is in just a few days.
The individual dishes
The menu, or rather the brunch menu, is divided into seven categories: Matsuhisa Specials, Egg Dishes, Matsuhisa Dishes, Matsuhisa Salads, Matsuhisa Signature Hot Dishes, Matsuhisa Signature Vegetables, and Desserts. Each category contains either three or four different dishes. You decide which category to start with. However, I recommend sticking to the suggested order. Each portion is about the size of a satisfying appetizer. After all, the idea is to try a good variety. I don't want to list everything individually for you, but rather... Here's a look at the brunch menu. make possible.
Don't be surprised if there are slight changes to the brunch menu during your visit. Seasonal specials may be introduced, dishes may be swapped, or new additions made. Around Easter, the menu also becomes a bit more colorful with new creations. So, things are never boring at Matsuhisa Munich, and certainly not during brunch.
My personal brunch experiences and favorites
My first brunch experience was at a meet-and-greet event for bloggers. I was absolutely thrilled. One small plate, bowl, or dish after another landed on the table in front of us, we nibbled and savored the food, and I simply couldn't stop. Even while I was still chewing, I was texting my friends, along with photos, saying things like, "We absolutely have to go to Matsuhisa for brunch on Sunday!" And it didn't take long for that to happen, and I managed to go again before the end of the year for the New Year's brunch at Matsuhisa – which, at the time, was my last brunch there. So I'm all the happier now that the brunch story continues – for me, specifically, at the very first available date on January 28th.
My clear favorites are "Nasu Miso," an eggplant boat in which the eggplant flesh is presented—sweet and warm. I don't know exactly what the eggplant is marinated in, but it's definitely addictive. My second favorite is the "Baby Tiger Shrimp with Creamy Spicy"—only slightly spicy. They taste so good that I briefly considered ordering only that. But that only lasted until you taste the first piece of "Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño" and the "Seared Salmon Karashi Su Miso." It doesn't get any better or fresher than that. Further delight followed with the "Black Cod with Dry Miso" and the "Matsuhisa Cheesecake" in the final "sweet round.".
So, to reiterate: You can order as much as you like. But don't make the mistake of choosing only one category or skipping too many options. Instead, try a wide variety of dishes. It's especially worthwhile to sample things that might be unfamiliar or that you can't quite picture. Either ask questions (about spice level, ingredients, quantity, etc.) or simply let yourself be surprised. Everything tastes absolutely wonderful. Ideally, order two or three different dishes with your companion, share them, and chat about them – in my opinion, that's the most fun way to enjoy brunch.
Hard facts and information
The Japanese-Peruvian Sunday brunch costs €99 per person. Children between six and twelve years old pay €39. That sounds like a lot, and it certainly would be if you considered it a "normal breakfast." But no... you can expect a top-class culinary event called "Feasting Deluxe." In an elegant, modern setting, you'll order, eat, and enjoy yourself in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. For more information about the brunch and to make a reservation, please call or email (linked in the box below). Be sure to browse the photo gallery for a good overview. I'm already so excited for my third visit! Don't miss out!.
