Breakfast tip: Buffet with regional products for €18 | Breakfast at the Holiday Inn Munich – Westpark – Germans are known for their love of breakfast. More precisely, two-thirds of them do, and their breakfast preferences are quite varied. Some prefer a hearty breakfast, others a rich and substantial one, and still others enjoy croissants, jam, and pancakes. Everyone has their own taste. I receive many inquiries every week along the lines of, "Hey Bianca, where can I find a good, affordable, and varied breakfast?" Catering to all these different needs isn't always easy, even for restaurateurs. One solution is to offer numerous signature breakfasts or pre-arranged breakfast sets, or to opt for the second option: a generous and attractive breakfast buffet.
As anyone who's ever stood in front of one has probably noticed, there are good and bad buffets. Breakfast, especially brunch or simply eating "from a buffet," doesn't always have the best reputation. But the extensive breakfast buffet at the Holiday Inn Munich – Westpark, specializing in seasonal and regional products, proves that it can be different. I love breakfast, I'm not averse to buffets, and I immediately went to try it out.
What can you expect at breakfast at the Holiday Inn?
Why did I choose the Holiday Inn Munich – Westpark specifically? After all, don't all hotels basically offer a breakfast buffet? – Firstly, because I don't know many that focus specifically on regional products and offer them all in such high quality, including (!) coffee (from Meinl | also filter coffee), tea (22 varieties), juices, and water for €18. That's hard to find in Munich, which is why it was so appealing to me. You can expect various yogurts, quark, spreads, and salads (pasta salad, couscous, tomato salad, meat salad, mini mozzarella with cherry tomatoes, freshly cut (!) fruit salad, etc.). Some of the salads are made entirely in-house, while others are sourced from Feinkost Kugler and prepared individually. Besides a generous selection of cold cuts and various cheeses, the buffet also includes smoked fish, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, Weisswurst, small meatballs, and crispy bacon. Fried eggs can also be ordered fresh from the waitstaff. For muesli fans, there's an attractively arranged "grain corner" with rolled oats, chocolate crumble, pumpkin seeds, muesli mix, and more. The bread corner offers toast and whole-wheat bread, baguettes (classic and whole-wheat), pretzels, and various rolls. Right next to the water with fresh lemon slices, orange juice, or multivitamin juice is the homemade cake, as well as classic croissants and mini chocolate croissants.
Ambience
The breakfast area feels much more like a restaurant than a traditional hotel breakfast room. At least, that's how it was for me; the modern decor, vibrant colors, and soaring ceilings made me instantly forget I was in a hotel and not a restaurant. Red and yellow chairs, elegant lamps, some partitions for privacy, and a large buffet area dominate the space. The breakfast area can accommodate approximately 200 guests.
Regional delicacies and specialties
On a small, separate board, alongside the standard buffet, the regional specialties included are listed – "a little taste of home," as it says. During my visit, for example, there were pots of fresh herbs and cress, as well as Obatzda (a Bavarian cheese spread) from the Miesbach dairy, ham from the traditional Gassner butcher shop, and Vienna and Weisswurst sausages from the traditional Holnburger butcher shop, also in Miesbach. So, in addition to good taste, they also offer background information and demonstrate transparency. New highlights are regularly added to the appetizing buffet.
I also really appreciate that everything is continuously replenished, and I observed that someone from the kitchen team regularly came out to the buffet to refill salads, cheeses, cold cuts, and so on. The presentation is lovingly detailed; for example, the eggs have faces, fresh cress can be cut by hand, some of the salads are decorated with fresh vegetables, and the muesli and cereal corner features small paper bags and wooden scoops. Everything tastes fresh and is of good quality. The "buffet panic" mentioned earlier by some Munich residents—that they wouldn't get anything fresh or that the food had been sitting out for hours and been touched by everyone—is, of course, unnecessary.
Hard facts and personal opinion
The breakfast buffet costs €18 per person for both hotel and non-hotel guests and is available from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on weekdays and from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on weekends and public holidays. There is no separate children's price. The Holiday Inn Munich – Westpark also offers a separate breakfast buffet, which is available to all guests, and a "small breakfast" for €15, which is more suitable for business travelers and excludes the hot buffet items. The hotel itself – formerly an Angelo Hotel, like the one currently located on Leuchtenbergring – has operated in this form since September 2017. Since its reopening as a Holiday Inn, the attractively designed hotel has welcomed non-hotel guests for breakfast. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and if, for example, I want to kick off a birthday with a nice breakfast in a relaxed atmosphere, meet a friend for a chat and my stomach is rumbling, or simply fancy a good buffet with a generous selection, then I will certainly come back. Depending on the day of the week, and definitely on weekends, a reservation is recommended.
