TACO COMPANY – So many new restaurants are opening in Munich that even I – with no activities in my life unrelated to food – struggle to keep track of all the new openings. That's why I made it a habit a while ago to regularly stroll through the different neighborhoods, keeping my eyes peeled for all the new openings and culinary highlights. In my opinion, this is the best way for me to discover most of the (new) noteworthy gastronomic hotspots in our city. This theory was confirmed once again by my spontaneous visit to the Taco Company on Schwabing's Amalienstraße, which opened at the end of 2018. Since then, they've been offering fresh tacos, burritos, soups, and salads.

What can you expect at the Taco Company?

Founder Lorenz Beck brought his idea of offering authentic tacos and burritos back to Munich from his time in the USA. After several months of development, he and his team, some of whom speak English, opened the first Taco Company in Schwabing (more locations are already planned). Their motto: "Enjoy fresh food," which also highlights one of the most important components: fresh ingredients, high-quality products, and a constant focus on sustainability. For the past four months, they've been offering tacos and burritos in various styles, with meat, vegetarian, and vegan options. Orders are placed directly at the counter, which is prominently located at the front of the small shop, designed for approximately 20 guests. The menu is displayed on a chalkboard on the wall, and drinks are taken from the refrigerated display case to the side, which also keeps the salads specially prepared by the Taco Company chilled. Besides tacos and burritos, there's also a daily changing soup; during my visit, it was a coconut, carrot, and ginger soup – perfect for these still somewhat chilly days. Once you've ordered, you can either sit down at one of the (high) tables and wait for your order to arrive, or simply take your tacos, burritos, salads, or soups to go. While I sat at my table and waited briefly, I took another look around the Taco Company, with its industrial-style design featuring lots of wood and steel, and glanced more closely at the menu.

The food and drink selection at the Taco Company

Clearly, the classic tacos (at €2.60 each) and burritos (at €4.60 each) are the main attractions. Both come standard with 100% organic beef from Austria, cheddar cheese, and lettuce. I tried both the tacos and the burrito and left feeling perfectly satisfied. The portions are more than manageable, so you can easily sample your way through both categories if you're not particularly hungry.

Both tacos and burritos are available in a "Supreme" version (for €3.10 (taco) and €5.10 (burrito)). This includes lettuce, tomato, and sour cream on top. If you prefer chicken to beef on your Mexican street food, simply choose the Chicken Taco or Chicken Burrito (for €2.60 and €4.60 respectively) – also available in standard and Supreme versions. For those who don't fancy meat at all, everything can be ordered vegetarian or vegan, with the vegan options consisting of vegan chicken strips with lettuce, cheddar, sauce, and tomatoes. But even if you're not in the mood for a taco or burrito during your visit, you'll still find something to your liking at the newly opened Taco Company. In addition to the aforementioned soup of the day and the generously portioned salads ("Mixed Salad" for 4.80 Euros and "Grilled Chicken Salad" for 5.60 Euros), there is also "Chili con Carne" (portion for 5.80 Euros) or quesadillas in the variants Veggie, beef or chicken (from 3.60 Euros).

The drinks shelf offers Coca-Cola and Eizbach Cola, Proviant lemonade, Tegernseer beer, and more. When you pay at the counter – you pay directly after ordering – fresh (organic) croissants (for €1.90) beckon, and your gaze inevitably falls upon the impressive coffee machine at the back of the counter, which prepares high-quality hot drinks and coffee specialties (espresso €1.90; cappuccino from €3.20; Ronnenfeldt tea for €3.60; hot organic chocolate for €3.80). If you stop by in the morning, you can also enjoy breakfast wraps with scrambled eggs (for €3.20), fruit salad, and Bircher muesli (each for €3.80) for a healthy start to your day.

The burrito – easy to eat and very tasty.

Now we'll try it!

As mentioned, my companion and I ate both the tacos and the burritos, and we deliberately sampled a bit of everything on the menu. The tacos are served wrapped in printed paper on a small tray at your table. Depending on how many you order, they are either simply placed on the tray or placed in the appropriate taco holder (see the slideshow below). The tacos disappear in three or four bites and make a bit of a mess when you bite into them. The generous amount of cheddar cheese piled on top inevitably spills onto the tray, the taco breaks relatively easily with the first bite, and the lettuce and tomato also tend to go astray. Despite this, they taste very good. It's best to hold the wrapping paper underneath so you can simply crumple it up afterward. The meat is delicious, and there's nothing to complain about in terms of taste and portion size with these little Mexican bites. I really like that you can order just one taco, spend less than three euros, and still have a good and, in a sense, filling snack. However, in my opinion, tacos aren't suitable for eating on the go, like "oh, I'll just quickly eat this while walking down the street.".

Just pick it up and bite into it…

The burrito (Supreme) we tried was a different story. Also wrapped in paper resembling newspaper, it too landed on our table. Since I don't like spicy food, I left it without the extra sauces on the table, which allow you to add more heat to your liking, and we devoured it right away. Overall, I personally preferred the burrito. It's not only easier to eat, but it's also more filling and less messy on the tray. It's also great for takeout. We both felt like we had more substantial food to "bite" with the burrito, and one was plenty to satisfy our hunger. They don't skimp on the ingredients when filling it, so the feeling of fullness, the quantity, and the price are all well-balanced.

Conclusion

Not all burritos are created equal, and if you ask ten people about the perfect burrito, you'll probably get eleven different opinions regarding appearance, wrapping technique, filling, and taste. In my opinion, the burrito from Taco Company is on par with any good burrito and can confidently be called an "authentic burrito." I was pleasantly surprised by both the prices and the portion sizes. The friendly service and helpfulness with the selection were also excellent. It would be great if they had a "house specialty" that was truly exclusive to Taco Company and that I would gladly return for. I'm sure the menu will be updated soon, and after the restaurant has been running for a while, they might offer rotating fillings for tacos and burritos. I also appreciate the idea of the daily soup and the vitamin-rich salads available to go. My plan: I'll come back for the breakfast wrap, muesli, and croissant as soon as the outside temperature allows us to sit on the terrace – which faces the street (and seats about 18 people). I'm excited! Come and see for yourselves and experience the quality and taste. I can definitely recommend the salads and the chili con carne, which I also tried. And be sure to ask about the well-seasoned guacamole. Delicious! Thumbs up for the Taco Company!.
