ZAR – Restaurant & Bar in Ramersdorf | As you know, I'm a child of Munich's southeast and therefore still often enjoy eating in the neighborhoods there. One restaurant that has been a part of my life for a long time and is, in my opinion, a true Munich institution, is ZAR in Ramersdorf. The building's history dates back to 1934; today, it's known as a cozy restaurant with a spacious outdoor seating area and beer garden, as well as a trendy bar for relaxed evenings and lively hours with a delicious breakfast. Because I always leave happy after every visit and am always happy to be a guest, I will now introduce you to ZAR in more detail, including its menu and highlights.

Before we sit down to eat, here's a quick look behind the scenes, as always. The building that houses ZAR was used as a restaurant almost 90 years ago, operating as the "Pschorr-Heim." Back then, it was only accessible to residents of Ramersdorf living in the surrounding housing estates. Thankfully, that has changed. In 1985, the restaurant was taken over by well-known Munich restaurateurs, renamed ZIC-ZAC, and operated with a modern restaurant concept. Five years later, the current owner, the equally well-known Munich restaurateur Arno Kahl, joined the business and took over management a few years after that. In 2005, an expanded concept, adapted to current trends, was developed, the restaurant was modernized, and it was relaunched as the ZAR we know today, complete with a spacious beer garden and outdoor seating area.
Today, ZAR stands for continuous development, modern gastronomy, warm hospitality, and excellent cuisine made with fresh, regional ingredients. A visit is worthwhile both on sunny days to relax and enjoy the Munich lifestyle in the cozy beer garden, and in the indoor area, divided into different sections, for the cooler months.
Now it's time to take a look at the menu and the culinary offerings at ZAR – by the way, that's short for "Zur Autobahn Raststätte" (To the Autobahn Rest Stop), as the Salzburg Autobahn is not far away, making it ideal for travelers to stop and refuel at ZAR.

Food and drink at ZAR: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
ZAR is your answer to all your culinary needs. Fancy breakfast? – Head to ZAR! Looking for a good lunch with colleagues? – Head to ZAR! Hungry after a long day, stomach rumbling, and you want a satisfying selection? – ZAR is the solution here too. And if your visit goes on a bit later and you fancy a nightcap, you don't have to leave the venue, because ZAR transforms into a trendy bar with a wide range of drinks (be sure to try the Spritz selection! The "ZAR Spritz" is my favorite so far!).
During the week, you can enjoy breakfast at ZAR from 11 am to 2 pm; on weekends and holidays, it's served from 10 am. A variety of signature breakfasts are available, each featuring a selection of delicious items pre-prepared for you. From the "Big Breakfast" or "Vital Breakfast," to the "American Breakfast" or "ZAR Breakfast for 2," and even the "Scandinavian" or "Bavarian Breakfast," there's something for everyone. Alternatively, you can create your own breakfast. In addition to the ever-popular ZAR Bowl with yogurt, fruit, and superfoods, there are also various egg dishes, ham, salami, or cheese platters, as well as a variety of pastries. Generally speaking, at ZAR, you can order anything from the menu individually, including items from the signature breakfasts. Pretty great, right?
The beer garden and outdoor seating area invite you to linger and enjoy yourself.
Since ZAR serves hot food continuously from 11 am to 11 pm, the standard menu automatically offers a wide selection of lunch options. In addition to the regular menu, which includes soups, salads, snacks, main courses (including classics), pasta dishes, burgers, and desserts, there's a special menu that changes approximately every two weeks, featuring additional dishes. This special menu always includes a different soup, a completely vegan dish, additional main courses not on the standard menu, and a unique dessert. Currently, for example, there's a cold platter, veal strips, Argentinian beef tenderloin, a halloumi burger, a ZAR noodle bowl, and apple fritters for a sweet finish.
Even after 11 p.m., you can still get snacks and finger food served until midnight – just in case the delicious drinks at ZAR make you hungry again. When it comes to drinks, ZAR offers a selection of various soft drinks, beers, coffee and tea specialties, long drinks, numerous cocktails, aperitifs, sparkling wines (champagne and sparkling wine), and various spirits and wines. And again: ask about the different Spritz varieties and be sure to try the Mango Spritz with gin and/or the "Zar Spritz." As you can see, at ZAR you're well looked after from morning till night.

My visit(s) to the ZAR: personal experience and conclusion
You absolutely shouldn't miss breakfast at ZAR. Even if you're not the biggest breakfast eater, it's worth making an exception here, because the spacious restaurant and beer garden with its covered outdoor seating and sunny spots alone is worth a visit.
We arrived quite hungry and decided to put together our own breakfast selection. All sorts of delicious things landed on our table, and we enjoyed a wonderful morning with white sausages, salmon, cheese, ham, scrambled eggs with chives and tomatoes (there were numerous variations to choose from), sweet pancakes, yogurt, fresh fruit, and a generously filled bread basket.
Everything served was not only appetizing and attractively presented, but also impeccable in terms of freshness, taste, and quality. Upon inquiry, I learned that great importance is placed on this and that, whenever possible, local partners, meaning regional products, are used.
I personally enjoyed both the "typical German" breakfast items (ham, cheese, egg, bread) and the delicious pancakes – with maple syrup! Mmm. Therefore, the breakfast, as well as the variety and flexibility offered in terms of customization, definitely gets a thumbs up.

For dinner, we treated ourselves just as well, starting with a finger food platter for two, loaded with onion rings, chili poppers, chicken wings and nuggets, spring rolls, and chips. It was served with sour cream, guacamole, and sweet and sour sauce. If you also choose the platter and, for example, would like less meat and more spring rolls (etc.), you can speak to the friendly staff – they are always happy to accommodate your requests if possible.
Despite the delicious finger food platter, be sure to leave room, as the selection of main courses on the menu is impressive. Besides a few snacks and salads with customizable toppings (goat cheese, tuna, sirloin steak, scampi, etc.), there are numerous classic dishes to choose from. This is what I particularly like about ZAR: they offer dishes that everyone knows – some even from childhood – and are simply delicious. For example, you can choose from savory Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle), Schinkennudeln (ham and noodles), Wiener Schnitzel, Cordon Bleu, Zwiebelrostbraten (roast beef with onions), Spaghetti Bolognese, spicy Penne all'arrabbiata, or four different burgers, also with optional toppings.
Veggie and vegan eaters are also catered for at ZAR, and in addition to salads and snacks, there is always a vegan dish, a vegetarian burger and a vegan vegetable curry on the aforementioned extra menu.
We opted for the club sandwich with turkey steak, bacon, a fried egg, mayonnaise, tomato, lettuce, and cucumber, accompanied by fries and a small side salad, as well as the vegetarian burger, which was topped with a vegetable patty, fruity curry sauce, and greens. It also came with fries. My sandwich was delicious, the turkey nice and juicy, and the sides were plentiful. If you can't finish your portion, you can, of course, have the leftovers packed up to go. I didn't try the burger, but it's on my list for my next visit, along with several other highlights from the menu.
So, all in all, only positive points here as well, just like for the final dessert: a super fluffy Kaiserschmarrn – homemade, of course, fresh from the oven with raisins and almonds, as well as applesauce and plum compote. Simply a real comfort food and worth every penny. 😉

In conclusion: If you enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, leisurely dining, and good company, ZAR is the perfect place for you. You can expect a laid-back ambiance with a chilled-out feel, accompanied by pleasant music that can be turned up a bit later in the evening. There's always a nice spot to be found in the beer garden, and your children will also have plenty to do at the playground.
The food is very good, always fresh and plentiful, and the portions are fair. The prices are perfectly reasonable, making ZAR a fantastic location that "always works," offers the right setting for every occasion, and is incredibly flexible.

The ZAR is not only the perfect location for your personal events, but also a great venue for event organizers. This year, on New Year's Eve (December 31, 2023, starting at 7 p.m.), there will be a lavish party complete with a buffet, music, and a proper celebration that you shouldn't miss. You can park directly in front of the ZAR, or alternatively along Rosenheimer Straße. Public transport will also take you to the ZAR by bus (lines 55/59) or by subway (line 2, Karl-Preis-Platz).
