I just came from the Panther Grill on Franz Josef Straße in Schwabing. My companion and I decided to eat there very spontaneously this evening – without a reservation, which wasn't a problem at all. In hindsight, it was a very good decision that we don't regret in the slightest – on the contrary, we'll definitely be back.
As soon as we entered – passing between two guiding, golden ropes to the left and right of the entrance – a friendly server greeted us, asked if we had a reservation, and then let us choose our own seats in the completely empty restaurant. There were also several free tables outside, of which about three or four were occupied.
We opted for a table right at the front by the window, in front of the chic central bar and small lounge with its lower seats and tables – perhaps intended for those who might have to wait a while for a table. The restaurant is quite long and extends deep into the back, where it feels a bit darker and more private. In total, the restaurant has about 20 tables, most of which are for two people, grouped together to seat four. Each table had a white tablecloth, a small pink flower in a vase, and tea lights in simple glass jars. Overall, it was exceptionally stylish and cozy – perhaps a bit stark for some, as the wall is painted in shades of gray and dark blue, and apart from a few flowers and panther figurines, there wasn't much in the way of decoration. However, everything was stylishly harmonious – a large mirror stretches across one wall, there's elegant parquet flooring, great lamps on the high ceilings, lots of glass, and unobstructed views – simply a cool atmosphere.
Our waitress asked us what we wanted to drink before we even sat down – as I've mentioned before, I'm not a fan of this – although it's generally considered a sign of good service. However, we took our time choosing and opted for a glass of Lugana Griwaldi from Veneto (0.1l for €3.90), still water, and Diet Coke.
We chose our main course from the menu displayed in a glass case outside the restaurant, or from the small, relatively concise A5-sized menus that our friendly server handed to us. Vegetarians could choose between gratinated goat cheese with peperonata, rosemary, honey, a small salad, and blueberries (€13) or crispy spinach and sesame rolls with chickpea puree, yogurt, and pomegranate (€12). I opted for the goat cheese and didn't regret my decision. While the portion wasn't particularly large and I finished relatively quickly, the delicious goat cheese was very filling. Combined with the tasty wine (definitely try the Lugana!), the small blueberries, and the very fresh and soft bread that was presented to us at the beginning in a paper bag—similar to a sandwich bag—stamped with the "Panther Grill" logo, it made for a truly excellent dinner. We finished the first portion/bag of bread relatively quickly, but less than 30 seconds later, we already had more – very good and attentive service. Our server was generally very friendly. We were left in peace while we ate; initially, we were offered fresh pepper with our main courses – yet our empty plates didn't sit around for too long, nor did we have to wait long for anything. Of course, it must be said that our waitress benefited from the fact that we were practically the only occupied table until we left the restaurant – but still, absolutely flawless service. The only thing was that I ordered my Diet Coke with lemon and without ice, and it arrived without lemon and with ice. 🙂 … but we don't want to nitpick.
My companion opted for salmon fillet. This was served on an exceptionally delicious wasabi mashed potato with sweet leek salad and shiso cress for €18. The salmon was a huge piece and practically fell apart just by looking at it. Incredibly tender and delicious, perfect in flavor and exactly how salmon should taste. I tried my companion's mashed potato and was very pleasantly surprised – not too spicy (which is what you'd expect from wasabi) but still remarkably delicate and with a very special flavor – I would definitely recommend it.
After we'd been sitting for a while, a younger man with glasses came to our table and asked if we were enjoying our meal. I asked him if he was the chef of these delicious dishes, and he was delighted when I complimented him on his creation: simply delicious food. I definitely recommend a visit. As I mentioned, you can also sit outside when the sun is shining and the service is friendly. During the week (we were there on a Thursday), it doesn't seem to be very busy, and you don't need a reservation. However, I would recommend making one on weekends, especially Saturdays (since they're closed on Sundays).
For those who don't like salmon or goat cheese, there are also king prawns with grilled vegetables, garlic, and herbs (€21), corn-fed chicken breast (€17), entrecôte (250g for €24), beef fillet (180g for €21 or 250g for €28), etc., with various side dishes (e.g., truffled mashed potatoes, steakhouse fries, baked potato, spinach, grilled vegetables, mixed salad, or Caesar salad) and different dips or sauces. Of course, there are also several desserts for those with a sweet tooth – such as nougat Toblerone mousse, cheesecake, or chocolate brownie, ranging from six to ten euros.
In the end, we paid €50 for two non-alcoholic drinks, a glass of wine, a soup – potato and truffle soup for €7, which was served in two bowls since we wanted to share it (incredibly delicious – you absolutely have to try it!), and two main courses including tip. Certainly not exactly cheap, but since we left the restaurant full, with wine in our bellies and an appetizer, we can't complain. As a final touch, our waitress even gave me a real white rose at the door – very kind and, so far, a unique gesture for me.
I would definitely recommend a visit to Panther Grill. The restaurant is very centrally located, easily accessible by public transport, and open from 6 pm Monday to Saturday. Whether you're with friends, family, or clients, this is the place for a great evening. Enjoy!.
