Anna Hotel at Stachus: Breakfast, dim sum and cocktails – Today was one of those days when I felt absolutely wonderful. Even though the sky was gray with thick clouds above me and I hadn't gotten much sleep, I still felt fantastic. Why? – Of course, it had to do with food, specifically the anna Hotel at Karlsplatz/Stachus. I not only got to sample their lavish breakfast buffet and the various handmade dim sum, but also their house wine and two cocktails. On top of that, I had the chance to chat with Christof Lobnig, the head chef who's been in charge of the anna restaurant for the past four and a half years. We talked about the culinary concept, the hotel's philosophy, and the highlights on the menu. Now I know: It's a fantastic restaurant – read on to find out why.

The anna Hotel at Stachus – Gastronomy & Hospitality

In my first article, in which I reported on the Geisel private hotels, their history and philosophy (Read more hereIt was already clear that I would be taking a closer look at a few of the Geisel hotels. One of them is the anna Design Hotel, which opened in 2002 and is family-run by hotel director Michael Geisel. The hotel is very centrally located between the main train station and Karlsplatz/Stachus, was expanded in 2005 (now boasting over 75 rooms), and underwent a redesign of its restaurant and kitchen areas in 2015. This also involved a change in the culinary concept within the anna restaurant. For years now, the anna restaurant has been considered both a trendy all-day dining establishment and a popular bar and hotspot for all ages. You are welcome from morning till night – whether for a glass of wine at the bar; a snack before or after the cinema; a delicious business lunch (for a reasonable €9.50); or a leisurely and substantial dinner with friends and family. A glance through the menu of the Anna restaurant reveals a young, modern and innovative cuisine with Euro-Asian influences.

This restaurant is so special to me because it offers a very modern ambiance while simultaneously catering to a wide range of culinary tastes. There's something for everyone on the menu, without it being overly multicultural or trying too hard to be diverse. I had the pleasure of enjoying the delicious breakfast (served between 7:00 and 11:00 am, and until noon on weekends), a comprehensive dim sum menu, and two different cocktails prepared by the skilled bar staff. Napkin on my lap, and off I went…

The breakfast buffet – daily from 7:00 am

Breakfast at the Anna Hotel

Breakfast buffets vary widely in the city – as anyone who enjoys eating out knows. When I arrived at the anna Hotel and discovered the buffet spread across the bar and counter area, I was immediately impressed. It was clear at first glance that it offered everything a breakfast enthusiast could wish for. Various mueslis, different jams (raspberry, apricot, and diet strawberry), a corner with various rolls and breads, sweet pastries – from brownies to croissants – as well as soy, lactose-free, and regular milk were all available at the bar. A variety of juices and spritzers, as well as mixed grains and nuts, were also offered. Turning towards the restaurant entrance, you'll find yourself at the equally well-stocked counter. There, sliced and chunky cheeses, fresh salmon, various types of ham, homemade Bircher muesli, yogurt with fruit, spreadable sausage, butter, raw vegetables, and much more await you. The buffet costs €22 per person – this includes various egg dishes, such as fried or scrambled eggs with a variety of toppings. Hot drinks are also included for hotel guests.

My selection of different dim sum

During my test, I tried pretty much everything: the incredibly delicious Bircher muesli and the yogurt with fresh fruit in a jar; the scrambled eggs with an extra ham and tomato topping; cheese and cold cuts in various styles, fresh bread with butter and jam, muesli, and a latte macchiato. The generously portioned scrambled eggs were definitely above average—flavorful and very fresh. Could it be due to the delicious eggs from the "Bavarian Fresh Service"? AZ places great emphasis on high-quality produce from morning till night. The fruit and vegetables come from "Früchte Feldbrach" and are individually selected for the anna Hotel, or delivered and prepared fresh daily. Those who prefer a lighter breakfast and don't want to serve themselves at the buffet will also find several dishes available as an à la carte option on the small breakfast menu (from €2.80).

Business lunch, late night snacks and cocktails

During the week, after breakfast, a weekly changing business lunch is served from 12:00 to 15:00. A different dish is offered each day – always prepared with fresh, high-quality ingredients and offering variety, as the anna restaurant has many regular customers who appreciate new culinary surprises. Head chef Christof Lobnig likes to showcase the restaurant's individual style during the business lunch, so classic dishes as well as Asian-inspired creations appear on the lunch menu. Every Thursday, a dim sum variation is offered for lunch, further demonstrating the kitchen's flexibility and highlighting the Asian influence. Fresh fish dishes (sourced from "Freddy Fine Food"), risotto, classic pasta dishes, steaks, and more are also available. Soups, salads, and Asian snacks are also part of the standard selection at the anna restaurant.

Between 11 pm and 1 am, anna restaurant offers a "late night snack" menu, featuring small items from the regular menu (from €5) for all night owls. Sweet pastries (from €4.50) from the display case are also available. Of course, the main focus late into the evening is primarily on the bar menu with its diverse selection of drinks and cocktails. If a glass of wine isn't your thing (…a must-try: the dry white wine cuvée "SauGeil" from Franconia | €4.60/0.1l glass…), then the extensive cocktail and long drink menu (available from 6 pm) is the perfect choice. The syrups are homemade, the creations are designed by the anna bar team and change regularly – there are five to six different cocktails each month, reflecting the bar's current theme. The shelves are stocked with over 100 different gins – the possibilities for a refreshing drink are endless. For my tasting, I had the "Annapolitan" (with Absolut Kurant, Monkey 47, Chambord lime juice, and cranberry juice | for €10) and the "Austrian Giant" (with Blue Gin, rosemary, juniper, lemon, and egg white | for €9). I personally love good gin and experimenting with it. The Austrian Giant really showcased the creativity behind the bar. I would definitely order it again.

Dim sum and à la carte dishes

Dim sum isn't just the specialty of Anna Restaurant, it's also my personal favorite on the menu. Since the renovation and concept change in 2016, dim sum has become the restaurant's flagship dish (…before that, it was sushi…). With the renovation, Anna Restaurant gained a larger kitchen, the bar was moved from the center to the side of the restaurant, and the team was also restructured. Now, a total of four kitchen staff members – including a Thai and a Chinese chef – are responsible for preparing the dim sum specialties, which are divided into three categories. For the dim sum you order at Anna Restaurant, all the dough (except wontons) is homemade and free of additives – you can taste the difference from the very first bite, enjoyed, of course, with chopsticks.

Exquisite tarts and cakes await in the display case.

The restaurant offers dim sum in steamed, deep-fried, and grilled forms. In addition to individual dim sum varieties (two to four pieces), there are also set menus for each of the three styles (steamed, baked, and grilled), each featuring ten different dim sum (22 euros per menu). During my visit, I chose "selection III," consisting of two each of "Seoul Dim Sum" (spicy kimchi dumplings, beef, Chinese cabbage, and carrot), "Harbin Dim Sum" (dumplings, chicken, and baby spinach), "Taipei Dim Sum" (dumplings, pork, shrimp, wild garlic, and shiitake mushrooms), "Qingdao Dim Sum" (woh tip dumplings, pork, Chinese cabbage, and ginger), and two "Laos Dim Sum" (dumplings with beef, radish, peanuts, and spicy Szechuan sauce). It's easy to see that each dim sum variety is named after a different Asian city.

In addition to my set of 10, I was also served six individual dim sum from a second category ("steamed dim sum" | four pieces for €9): "Hong Kong Dim Sum" (with har gao, shrimp, and bamboo shoots), "Hakka Dim Sum" (dumplings with shrimp and wild garlic), and "Singapore Dim Sum" (dumplings with shiitake mushrooms, carrot, water chestnut, lotus root, and peanuts). From the "deep-fried dim sum" category, I also had crispy "Phuket Dim Sum" (with beef, lemongrass, and mango chili dip) to try. My favorites were definitely the steamed and grilled dim sum—also because of their wide range of flavors—and I would recommend trying a balanced mix of them. (Ideally, come with a few friends and arrange different dim sum in the middle of the table for sharing.)

Background information and hard facts about the Anna Hotel

The Anna restaurant can accommodate 120 people, as can its sunny terrace. Unfortunately, breakfast isn't served on the terrace, but from 12:00 PM onwards, the terrace seating is available for business lunches, dinners, coffee and cake, etc. You can usually drop in at the Anna restaurant without a reservation, as they also cater to those who decide to come at the last minute. While I can't guarantee a sunny spot on the always busy terrace, you should always find a seat at the Anna.

It's also worth stopping by often, as the business lunch menu changes weekly, new cocktails are added to the menu every month, and of course, dishes are prepared seasonally and for special occasions – whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. If you're looking for a sweet treat, you'll find four to five different cakes, cookies, pastries, and tarts (from Confiserie Nessbach & Schwalber) in the display case from 12:00 PM onwards – after breakfast has finished – with some of the desserts served in glasses (such as the tiramisu) being homemade. Vegans and those with allergies are catered for with a separate menu, and the anna kitchen team is generally as flexible as possible and will fulfill feasible special requests. If you're ever in a hurry but still want to enjoy the delicious food at anna restaurant, you can also have everything packed up to take away. The Anna restaurant has definitely gained a new fan in me – whether for breakfast, a snack in between or a dim sum session.
