Billy's Pizza Snack – Pizza snacks in various varieties – I recently told you about Dafgårds (Read more hereDafgårds is the manufacturer of the world-famous Köllbullar and a producer of 80,000 tons of high-quality frozen products in the premium sector. One of their products, a perennial favorite, especially among Swedes with over 40 million units sold annually, is Billys. Billys is a pizza snack available in numerous varieties, ready to eat in two minutes, and microwaveable. As a fan of "little snacks," I decided to take a closer look at Billys.
Discover Billy's Pizza Snack
I found Billy's Pizza Snacks in the freezer section of the Edeka supermarket around the corner from me. They're currently available in select Edeka stores in Southern Bavaria, and will soon be available in Northern Bavaria as well. I picked up the "Original," "Veggie," "Pepperoni," and "Chicken Fajita" varieties—basically all the flavors currently available in Germany. The latter is the newest flavor and has only recently become available here. Even while choosing my snacks from the freezer, I appreciated that there were options for vegetarians and vegetarians, as well as for those who prefer a mild spiciness. But why did Billy's even pique my interest? – Firstly, because it's a quick and satisfying meal for those days when I want to indulge in a little "calorie treat"; secondly, because it's so fast and there wasn't a snack in Germany that offered pizza in this style and without a crust (!). I wanted to try it and put a few packs in my shopping basket – thanks to the handy size of approximately 15 by 10 centimeters, enough fit in my small freezer at home.
Pizza snacks in various varieties – my personal test
Once home, there wasn't much to do before the actual test, i.e., the first bite, and minimal preparation was required. Dafgårds is banking on this with their Billys: no fuss with the snack until that mid-morning hunger is satisfied – in numbers: two minutes. All you have to do is cut off a small corner of the packaging, and then Billys – packaging and all! – can go into the microwave for 120 seconds (at 750 watts). I used the time to take a look at the packaging and the nutritional information. The "original" version has just under 430 kilocalories. This is due, on the one hand, to the generous amount of cheese placed on the approximately 2.5 cm thick and very soft dough, and on the other hand, to the relatively thick dough itself. There's plenty of topping; one Billys will definitely satisfy a "medium snack hunger," and you certainly won't be able to manage more than two, in my opinion (challenge accepted? ;-)).
Having now tried all the varieties, here's my verdict, or rather, my verdict and that of my fellow tasters: In first place, the "Billy's Original" version. Simply because you can't go wrong with ham and melted cheese, and also because it most closely resembles a classic thick-crust pizza. There's no need to cut off the crust or painstakingly bite your way to the center, because there isn't one. The first bite tastes just as good as the last. The snack is gone in about 7-8 large bites, and your stomach is full. After one bite, the feeling of fullness—at least for me—is nonexistent, but you're still satisfied. Of course, if you eat more, you can quickly feel full, just like with other snacks and "fast food." In second place for me is the vegetarian version. I abstained from meat for a very long time and even now I don't have steak, schnitzel, and sausage on my plate every day, but I still enjoy eating meat. It's perfectly fine without meat, though. I personally wouldn't buy the pepperoni variety often, as it's too spicy for me and I'm not a huge salami fan – but I still wanted to try it. The new "Chicken Fajita" variety is also quite spicy for me and tastes a bit different from the classic "pizza style." While you always eat Billy's with your hands, like a slice of pizza, regardless of the variety, the quite delicious topping – chicken and cheese – would occasionally even land on a pizza base for me. The base, by the way, is very soft, thick, and supple. So when you take Billy's out of the microwave, nothing gets crispy, and nothing drips or splatters. With a microwave in your pocket, it's also ideal for on the go. 😉
My conclusion: At €1.50 each, you can easily stock up on three or four of these and keep them in your freezer. You'll certainly be glad to have something filling and tasty on hand. Billys aren't bad taste-wise, and for me, they're a great snack option. I especially appreciate that there's a vegetarian version, which I highly recommend trying. The dough might not be to your liking if you don't enjoy "American-style" pizzas—that is, thick, airy dough that collapses when you bite into it. While I personally prefer a flat, Italian-style pizza, I can still enjoy these. The fact that Billys don't have a crust and taste the same everywhere is another big plus. If you have young children who are old enough to use the microwave on their own, then try a few of these brightly packaged pizza snacks and see for yourselves what you think of this Swedish snack sensation. I'm curious.
