Fabbri 1905 – best Italian Amarena cherries – Even if you truly don't have a single topic in life that interests you as much as food and drink, you can't possibly keep up with all the latest innovations, trends, and must-haves in the culinary world. So, naturally, it happens to me from time to time that I discover new products and delicacies, get to try them, and am immediately captivated. This recently happened to me with Fabbri 1905 and their Fabbri Amarena cherries. Admittedly, Amarena cherries weren't exactly a staple in my diet or "cheat day" plans – but that's all changed now. The reason: Fabbri Amarena cherries, which I had the opportunity to explore further during a small tasting. I also discovered some other highlights from the Fabbri 1905 range.
The Amarena cherry
Before I could taste them, I did a little research on the small red fruit. In Germany, Amarena cherries are those preserved in syrup and belong to the sour cherry variety "Amarena." There are three main sour cherry varieties; the Amarena cherry is primarily used as an accompaniment to desserts or in ice cream sundaes. However, the Amarena cherry itself is much more versatile and a perfect addition to cakes, tarts, chocolates, and other appetizers. The small red berries also combine beautifully with sparkling drinks. The syrup in which the Amarena cherries are preserved in the Italian style consists primarily of their own juice, sugar, and a little citric acid. Since there are many (Italian) suppliers of Amarena cherry syrup – some good, some not so good – each manufacturer naturally has their own trade secret for making the Amarena cherries and syrup even better and more delicious. At the very top when it comes to quality and Amarena cherry enjoyment is Fabbri 1905 from Bologna, whose white jars, decorated with blue, are considered the benchmark for the "perfect Amarena cherry" in Italy. Now, let's get to the cherries!
Try Amarena cherries from Fabbri1 1905
Take a look at the little jars in this photo. Now imagine opening the lid, hearing the click, and seeing a shimmering, dark red surface revealing the top third of the juicy, glossy Amarena cherries in syrup. Yes, exactly, that's how I felt: you just want to dip your spoon (…or even your finger…? ;-)) into the jar and taste the cherries. Of course, they're delicious on their own, or as described above, with ice cream or dessert. Drained Amarena cherries are also perfect for Sunday brunch, for example, as a sweet topping in a glass of Prosecco or on fresh waffles. Simply delicious and always a little something extra.
A small jar or pot of Fabbri Amarena cherries contains approximately 230 grams of Amarena cherries including syrup. This is easily enough to satisfy 3-4 people with a sweet tooth at a leisurely brunch.
The rest of the Fabbri 1905 product range
Fabbri 1905's product range includes many other items. Besides the Amarena cherries, my favorites are the various syrups, which add a bit of variety to a glass of water. With strawberry, elderflower, grenadine, and Amarena cherry (…there they are again…), there's plenty of choice, so it never gets boring. My favorite was the Amarena cherry syrup.
The product range also includes pickled "babà." These are tall, round bundt cakes made from sweet yeast dough, which are soaked in a mixture of simple syrup and rum after baking. Not for the faint of heart, but ideal for quickly satisfying a sweet tooth with just one bite. Something I rarely use (…but which is actually not bad at all ;-)…) is chocolate sauce. Fabbri also offers a gluten-free version of this, and I got to try it – in my case, over two scoops of vanilla ice cream.
Take a look around the Fabbri 1905 website, read a bit, and let the Amarena cherry fever take hold of you. 😉 I had a lot of fun trying out their range, and I'm happy to have found a new way to enhance sweets and add that "certain sweet something" to drinks and other treats.
