Heide Volm is a restaurant in Planegg – a district bordering the west of Munich – specializing in good Bavarian cuisine and steeped in tradition and history. The restaurant has been around for many years, and I even ate there as a small child during a family celebration. Since I wasn't writing about restaurants back then 😉, after many years and repeated requests from friends to eat there, I was drawn back to Planegg and Heide Volm.
At Heide Volm, the menu and the food are always the top priority – whether you're dining as a couple or in a larger group. You decide what's on the menu, and the kitchen team, together with head chef Pascal Heide-Nigg, ensures its smooth execution. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant offers a daily changing menu and an extensive wine list. During asparagus season, you can expect delicacies such as a creamy asparagus soup with butter croutons (€4.50) or asparagus spears with various side dishes – such as prawns, juniper-cured ham, schnitzel, pork tenderloin medallions, or beef sirloin steak, as well as parsley potatoes (from €14.50). The menu also features typical traditional dishes like Bavarian roast pork with crackling, turkey schnitzel, Wiener schnitzel, sauerbraten, onion roast beef, and more (from €9.90). The selection of diverse meat dishes, as well as various fresh fish dishes, is varied and arranged so that everyone is sure to find something they like. Of course, the traditional Bavarian snack is also available in the form of various snack platters and assorted cold and hot dishes. (In my opinion, no Bavarian snack is complete without the typical Obatzda cheese spread with a pretzel – available here for €7.20). And anyone who knows me knows that the first thing I check is whether they have good Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle) with roasted onions. 🙂 Bingo! Heide Volm also offers this for a fair €10.90 with cheese from the Tegernseer Land organic dairy, roasted onions, and a small mixed salad. As you can see, when it comes to Bavarian culinary delights, there are no limits at Heide Volm.
The daily menu includes soups (from €4.50), salads (from €9.90), pasta dishes (from €9.90), fish and meat dishes (from €13.90), and currently also asparagus variations. Of course, there's something for those with a sweet tooth too. Bavarian cream, apple fritters (mmmmh!), caramelized Kaiserschmarrn (yet another mmmmh!) and more are available. You can treat yourself to dessert after your main course starting at €5.90.
The restaurant has been around for many years. Its history dates back to 1854, and together with the Heide family, it has been a success story for over 80 years. For example, in the Bavarian-style dining rooms, furnished with plenty of light wood, tradition is honored and brought up to a modern standard. The restaurant is divided into different dining areas and cozy rooms for sitting and relaxing. These include the Hubertusstüberl, which can accommodate up to 50 people and shines in new splendor with fresh colors and a cozy atmosphere; the Zirbelstuben, with its unique pine scent – the perfect room for celebrations of up to 20 people; the large hall (for up to 800 people); and the small hall (for 80-150 people). In addition, there's the conservatory and, of course, the charming, cozy restaurant itself. In short: The restaurant offers space for all kinds of celebrations – whether you need a room for 10 guests or a hall for up to 800 people.
During my companion's and my stay, we enjoyed a lavish asparagus buffet with numerous side dishes, salads, and desserts – set up in a separate room on an attractive buffet. The asparagus buffet was one of the many different events and functions offered at the Heide Volm restaurant. The restaurant hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year. For example, from November 2015 to March 2016, they held a regular "Tafelrunde" (round table) – a gathering with friends and strangers – which regularly sold out quickly. So you have to be fast! Here, guests dined at a beautifully decorated table throughout the evening, enjoying delicious five-course meals (for €59 per person) prepared by the experienced kitchen team in a convivial atmosphere, each with a different theme. Speaking of beer garden parties: The Heide Volm beer garden is legendary and a true must for hot summer days and balmy evenings in a relaxed atmosphere under the open sky. Pure summer feeling under shady chestnut trees, cozy spots and of course a freshly tapped, cool Hacker-Pschorr beer and Bavarian delicacies.
The service was also excellent: As soon as we arrived at the restaurant and sat down, we were served a basket of delicious, warm bread and asked for our drink preferences. We opted for a refreshing rhubarb spritz – one with and one without alcohol – as a special request, which was happily accommodated. Afterwards, we enjoyed the delectable asparagus buffet. The asparagus soup – served in two large pots – was incredibly flavorful and intensely aromatic – a true delight with the warm bread. The asparagus itself, paired with the delicious hollandaise sauce, was superb. The sauce was exceptionally good, in my opinion, and so we immediately went back for a second and third helping, including more asparagus. 🙂
So definitely stop by Restaurant Heide-Volm for a delicious asparagus dish or another Bavarian meal. A visit is absolutely worthwhile – firstly, because the food is delicious, and secondly, because the service, prices, and overall atmosphere are just right. Here you're a bit removed from the crowded restaurants and beer gardens of Munich's city center. The Planegg S-Bahn station is right outside, so you can easily get home even after enjoying a beer or two. 🙂 There's absolutely no sign here of the increasingly touristy Bavarian restaurants that are unfortunately becoming more and more common in Munich's city center. I felt well looked after throughout my visit, ate well, sampled delicious wines and other beverages, and will definitely be back. Will you join me?
