THE LINDNER Romantic Hotel in Bad Aibling | A day in Bad Aibling with Wiener Schnitzel and a visit to the Bad Aibling thermal baths – My job and daily routine rarely allow me to travel for more than a few days at a time. This often means my destinations need to be easily accessible, or at least within Europe, if not in our beautiful Bavaria. In other words, I've developed a real affinity for traveling within my own state. I'm constantly reminded that Bavaria is not only diverse but also simply stunning. My last trip, which reinforced this feeling, took me and my companion to Bad Aibling. After a good hour's drive from Munich, we stayed at the lovely 4-star Romantik Hotel Lindner ("DAS LINDNER Romantik Hotel in Bad Aibling"), had dinner in the hotel's restaurant, LINDNERS Stub'n, and enjoyed a few relaxing hours beforehand at the Bad Aibling thermal baths – massage included.

The LINDNER Romantik Hotel has been a fixture in Bad Aibling for seven generations. For decades, it has been a meeting place for travelers, locals, vacationers, and anyone who wants to enjoy the charm of a small historic town while also seeking comfortable accommodations. The Hotel Lindner boasts a long and rich history, and is not only known as the birthplace of Saint Ratholdus, but also as the favorite haunt of the famous painter Wilhelm Leibl. Even today, a table where he once dined and drank still stands in the Stub'n – pretty cool, right? Now, nearly 120 years after his passing, the hotel is a successful blend of modernity and history. At the LINDNER Romantik Hotel, state-of-the-art comfort meets historical charm, and innovation meets tradition. Always palpable is the genuine hospitality and warm, personal service that characterize this family-run business. Another great feature: Allergy-friendly accommodations are also a priority, with an entire wing of rooms designated as pet-free. The furnishings and equipment in the new rooms meet allergy-friendly criteria.
The hotel rooms – all equipped with cozy beds, modern interiors, TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi – are divided into six different categories (Comfort Room, Double Room, Single Room, Deluxe Room, Superior Garden Room, and Business Room), ensuring there's something to suit every need. My companion and I stayed for a day in a "Deluxe Room" with a fully glazed front, ample space, modern furnishings, a whirlpool tub, and a huge balcony. We felt instantly at ease. I was particularly delighted by the small selection of delicacies from the daily menu, which was brought to our room as a welcome gift and significantly heightened our anticipation for our evening meal at the hotel restaurant, "LINDNERS Stub'n.".
The Bad Aibling thermal baths including wellness facilities
Since the weather was unfortunately very bad during our stay, a tour through the beautiful old town of Bad Aibling was out of the question, and we devoted ourselves directly to visiting the [unclear text] after our successful snack. Bad Aibling Thermal Baths. Anyone familiar with the thermal baths can probably guess what my visit consisted of: lounging in the hot water, getting a massage, and drinking Coke at the bar. 🙂 And that's exactly how it was. It was our first visit to the thermal baths, and there was plenty to discover in the facility, which opened in 2007. Of course, it's busier on a rainy weekend, but we still had plenty of space to relax in the pools, all filled with very warm water and covered by domes. Because the pools (except for the also very warm outdoor pool) are covered by domes, the thermal baths don't feel like a typical swimming pool, and the noise level is significantly lower. The various domes (thermal dome, adventure dome, sensory dome, relaxation dome, hot/cold dome, and experience dome) are just as captivating as the spacious sauna area, offering plenty of room and tranquility within the expansive thermal spa's adventure park. With its diverse saunas and options (rose quartz at 40-50°C; aromatic at 55-60°C; eucalyptus at 50-55°C; steam ice bath at 42-45°C; brine inhalation; and salt steam bath), there's something to suit every sauna enthusiast. During the warmer months, a dip in the thermal spa's outdoor pool is a must – complete with a view of the Alpine silhouette. Four-hour visits start at €20 for adults, while a family day ticket for two adults and two children costs €69.
Besides relaxing moments in the various pools, the highlight for my companion and me was the spa area. Conveniently, it's accessible even without a spa ticket, so you can simply come for a massage. We opted for a Hawaiian-style Lomi Lomi massage. It lasted 90 minutes and is only for those of you who aren't afraid of physical contact. 😉 But they don't just offer a wide variety of massages; they also have bathing and anointing experiences, so the beauty and wellness program should have something for everyone who enjoys being touched on this level. I'm personally a big fan of relaxing massages and will definitely keep both the spa and the wellness offerings in mind. They also offer hammam and ceremonies centered around the Aiblinger Moor. My companion and I, feeling refreshed and thoroughly massaged, returned to the hotel after a refreshing drink at the on-site bar. My stomach was growling, because being active makes you hungry.
Upon returning to the hotel and arriving at the restaurant, we were immediately greeted and seated by a friendly member of staff in LINDNERS Stub'n. Taking a look around, we discovered cozy seating nooks and dark tables, subtle lighting, a harmonious interior with plenty of wood and carefully chosen details, and tables already set, all contributing to the ideal atmosphere of comfort in this rustic tavern. For me, the Stub'n is a perfect example of how coziness isn't just about the big picture, but also about the many small details and a skillful blend of modern and traditional elements, as seen here. During our visit, the integrated tiled stove, the vaulted ceilings, the fresh flowers on the tables, and much more certainly contributed to our pleasant mood from the moment we sat down.
First, let's take a look at the clear yet well-structured menu at LINDNERS Stub'n. Divided into aperitifs (from €4.80), cocktails & long drinks (from €5.90), and non-alcoholic cocktails (from €5.50), the menu begins. Page two currently features the "Culinary Autumn 2018 / Lindner Menu," which is offered for both meat-eaters and vegetarians (for €43 and €38, respectively). To give you a first impression of the cuisine, I've taken a look at the menu for you: Course 1: Baked salsify, carrot bread, pine nut coating, beetroot carpaccio, lime and thyme cream, and lamb's lettuce; Course 2: Roasted wild duck breast, bread and apple stuffing, red wine and orange jus, and sous-vide cooked autumn vegetables; Course 3: Chocolate bread loaf soufflé with cherry ice cream and Prosecco foam. Doesn't sound bad, does it? If you're not in the mood for a set menu but prefer à la carte, there are also oven-fresh tarte flambée, beef tartare (from €14.50), and various salads. The last page of the menu, dedicated to dishes, is divided into main courses and desserts (categories "The Main Course" and "Just a Little More"). Currently, there are seven different main courses, including, for example, "Alpine Cheese Spaetzle" (€14.50), "Two Kinds of Dumplings" (€12.50), "Chiemgau Fried Chicken" (€21.50), "Aiblinger Char from the Mangfall Valley" (€20.50), and "Chiemsee Pike-Perch Fillet" (€19.50). The dessert selection continues with a diverse range of options: "Chocolate Mousse Duo," "Bavarian Cream with Sour Raspberries," "Crème Brûlée," or "Homemade Kaiserschmarrn – Classic with Almonds, Raisins, and Applesauce" – all priced between €6 and €9.50 – are offered. The "Pack ma's" section also highlights the daily availability (from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.) of snacks and lighter fare. Examples include beef consommé (from €5.50) with your choice of garnish; "Pea Cream Soup" (€7.50); "Lindner's Obatzda" with caraway seeds, red onions, and radishes (€7.00); or "King Ludwig's" sausage salad (€7.50). Also good to know: On sunny days, you can also eat, drink, sunbathe, and relax on the sun terrace belonging to LINDNERS Stub'n. However, my attention was primarily drawn to the "Viennese veal schnitzel with fried potatoes, cranberries, and a small mixed salad" (for €23.50), which was listed among the main courses and which neither my companion nor I could resist.
My stay at LINDNERS Stub'n
Before ordering two Wiener Schnitzels, we decided on a starter by the glass. I was in the mood for rosé. They didn't have any available as an aperitif, so the wine of the evening landed directly on our table – a 2017 "Villa Bürklin Rosé VDP" from the Dr. Bürklin-Wolf winery, which I was already familiar with and which had impressed me on other occasions as a charming rosé. Produced by winemaker Nicola Libelli from Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, this wine was an excellent choice – and a perfect match for the schnitzel we had chosen.
Now then! "Two Wiener Schnitzels. One with potato salad, one with fried potatoes, please." No sooner said than done – less than 15 minutes later, two Wiener Schnitzels per plate were in front of us – just as they should be in Bavaria – with a side of potatoes. What we weren't served was the advertised small leaf salad (here's the proof ;-)), but that wasn't a problem, as we ate plenty of the bread that had been served beforehand, along with rendered pork fat and sweet salted butter. As for the Wiener Schnitzel itself, there's only one comment: 10 points! The breading was a beautiful golden yellow and not too thick; the meat was pounded just the right thickness, not a single piece of gristle in it, making it a perfectly balanced schnitzel. The breading was quite "light" and, although it did fall off slightly when cutting the meat, it wasn't overpowering in terms of flavor. Too often, you get Wiener Schnitzels that are actually more "breading with meat" than the other way around. The accompanying potato salad was also good and attractively presented, although in my estimation it wasn't homemade (…sorry if it was ;-)). The fried potatoes were absolutely delicious, even though they were quite salty – I really enjoyed them.
Well, anyone who knows me knows that my stomach can never be so full that I can't fit in anything sweet. So, of course, I couldn't resist the aforementioned Kaiserschmarrn. We deliberately ordered a "small portion with two forks," but it felt like we still got the large one – no big deal! 🙂 The Kaiserschmarrn tasted absolutely delicious, which is quite a compliment, considering I've tried practically every Kaiserschmarrn in Munich. It wasn't too eggy, soft, or even soggy, but beautifully fluffy and, thank goodness, pulled apart. The applesauce wasn't homemade, but the freshly made Kaiserschmarrn more than made up for it.
I would definitely come back and order Wiener Schnitzel again, as well as Kaiserschmarrn, or perhaps even the set menu. I also appreciate that LINDNERS Stub'n – which is certified organic, by the way – places great emphasis on good raw materials and high-quality ingredients in all its dishes. When I inquired, I learned that they source almost exclusively sustainable and organic products from regional partners. So, thumbs up from me for the Stub'n! Even those with food allergies can enjoy a delicious meal. Trained staff can provide information about ingredients and offer irritant-free alternatives.
