Jochen Schweizer Arena Gastronomy – Now it's just a few hours until the Jochen Schweizer Arena in Taufkirchen opens. In a previous report about this (Jochen Schweizer Arena in TaufkirchenI've already given you a comprehensive report on the expected highlights, sporting and culinary opportunities on site. Now, I – along with some industry colleagues – had the opportunity for the first time to do a tasting on site, in a small group and before the opening – naturally, to whet your appetite beforehand.
In the heart of the arena, where young and old, athletes and gourmets, as well as numerous food fans, will soon gather to enjoy delicious food. We were served dishes that you too can order, taste, and enjoy from the official opening on March 7, 2017 – regardless of whether you're planning on participating in sports activities before and/or afterward. Everyone is welcome. A visit to the Jochen Schweizer Arena is a must – and I'd like to give you a little glimpse behind the scenes to show you just how worthwhile the trip is, even from a purely culinary perspective…
Jochen Schweizer Arena Gastronomy – the concept
The Jochen Schweizer Arena offers a unique crossover dining experience, operating under the Jochen Schweizer brand itself. The main restaurant, located in the heart of the arena, seats up to 150 guests. Like most areas of the arena, it boasts a bright and welcoming atmosphere with ample natural light streaming in through the building's glass facade. Warm colors, plenty of wood, a pleasant ambiance, and a space to unwind create a welcoming atmosphere – even though surf waves are breaking and wind tunnel flights are taking place just a few meters away. With its concept and exquisite, diverse menu, the restaurant is sure to satisfy virtually every palate. Additional snacks and a variety of cocktails are also available in the beach boxes near the wave machine (citywave), as well as near the air box and the bodyflying tunnel.
What's on the menu? – Food and drinks
There's so much to choose from! Whether it's breakfast for a great start to the day with three different combinations ("#DerHeldinDir", "Blue Skies" or "Hang Loose" for €11.80 each) or various egg dishes (from €3.50), power muesli or protein shake, appetizers (from €7.90) such as hummus, Thai beef salad, various soups (from €5.80) or various main courses (from €7.90), snacks and desserts – the selection is impressive. For example, there's yellow or green Thai curry, different pasta dishes on the daily specials, pan-fried salmon fillet, but also classics like Wiener Schnitzel with potato and cucumber salad or fried potatoes and cold cranberry sauce (for €19.80) – certainly one of the first reasons I'd "just" come to the Jochen Schweizer Arena for a meal. But even those who simply want to treat themselves to a hearty snack platter with specialties such as meat from the Labonca sun-fed pig, mountain cheese from Tegernsee and bread from the organic bakery or a sweet treat in between (crème brûlée, chocolate cake, sorbet variation or iced espresso) are in the right place here.
The menu is expanded to include various superfruit dishes. Both the "Jochen Schweizer's Protein Power Shake" (€3.90) and the "Jochen Schweizer's Power Muesli" (€4.90) are available. The latter was developed specifically for the Jochen Schweizer Arena, while the Protein Power Shake was created in cooperation with the start-up frooggies. The ideal thing about both products is that they are available for both on-site consumption and takeaway. They also symbolically represent Jochen Schweizer and, of course, the Jochen Schweizer Arena's catering service, which follows a conscious nutritional philosophy.
Sports and/or food make you thirsty, so there's plenty of choice when it comes to drinks. The in-house "Jochen Schweizer Arena Lemonade," for example, is available for €3.90 in two different flavors (grapefruit-rosemary or calamansi-ginger), as are hot drinks, such as coffee variations (from Segafredo) starting at €2.40 and various teas (from the Chiemgau Tea Manufactory) for €4.80 each. You can toast with Paulaner beer (from €2.90 for 0.33 liters) or open rosé, white, and red wines. To mark the launch of the Jochen Schweizer Arena Gastronomy and the Arena opening, for example, there is an open 2015 Riesling VDP estate wine from Rheinhessen (0.2l for €8.40), a 2015 Chardonnay Grave del Friuli from Friuli/Italy (0.2l for €7.80) among the white wines and a 2015 organic Pinot vom Berg QW kbA from the Neusiedlersee hill country (0.2l for €9.30) or a 2013 „Brolio Bettino“ Chianti Classico DOCG from Tuscany (0.2l for €15.40). A wine spritzer costs €4.80 (0.2l), and you can order an open rosé (2015 "Les Rosés" Coteaux-du-Languedoc Rosé AC from Roussillon in France) for €8.40 (0.2l). Various aperitifs, sparkling wines, bottled wines, and other beverages are also available.
Food and drink are therefore provided. However, all dishes on the Jochen Schweizer Arena's catering menu – whether appetizer, snack, main course, light meal or dessert – share one thing in common: top quality in the ingredients and the selection of individual products.
Ingredients and "Where it comes from!"„
Partners of the Jochen Schweizer Arena include the Stocker butcher shop from Hohenbrunn, Leogang, and the Labonca organic farm. While the Stocker butcher shop, founded in 1994, offers only organic beef, veal, and lamb, the Schattbachhof Leogang farm, organically managed since 1972, impresses as a pure grassland operation with its own alpine pasture, species-appropriate animal husbandry, and on-site slaughtering. (The Arena Burger, for example, features succulent roasted beef from Leogang ox and is served with sweet potato fries for €14.80). A particularly great aspect: The Labonca organic farm also supplies the Arena with high-quality ingredients. In Austria, it is one of the top organic meat producers and home to the largest organic free-range pig farm in the country.
My tasting and first impressions
For the small group mentioned earlier, there was a selection of delicious dishes available in appropriately sized portions. A total of six different items were offered, including hummus with confit cherry tomatoes and wild herbs (€7.90), ceviche of fjord salmon with chili, coriander, red onion, and tiger's milk (€9.80), and the aforementioned Thai beef salad with coriander, lemongrass, and roasted peanuts (€8.80). We sampled everything. My favorite was definitely the Asian "Tom Kha Gai" soup – a Thai coconut soup with chicken and vegetables (€6.80). Before finishing, we enjoyed a mango sorbet with a crispy wafer (€7.90) and a piece of tender meat with green beans. I recommend clicking through the slideshow; that should be enough to whet your appetite and make you want to dine at the Jochen Schweizer Arena. Everything tasted very good to me, and the freshness and conscious selection of only the best ingredients quickly became noticeable in every course.
In my opinion, and based on my initial taste tests, the Jochen Schweizer Arena, including its restaurants, will quickly establish itself in Munich and make a name for itself as a new hotspot for healthy, honest, creative, and high-quality cuisine in Munich-Taufkirchen.
Hard facts
The Jochen Schweizer Arena, including its restaurants, opens on March 4, 2017. Ample parking is available. For further details, please read the article linked above. Spring and summer are just around the corner, and the 4,500 m² outdoor area, offering al fresco dining, should be quite appealing. I'm really looking forward to the opening, getting to know the Jochen Schweizer Arena restaurants better, and to another great dining option in Munich.

Today I drove past the arena on my way to Ikea, it looks really cool! I'm curious to see what it's like, my kids really want to try out the surf wave!
