First of all, I apologize to all hungry readers, as today's post isn't about culinary indulgence, but rather about restoring your physical condition so you're even able to go out to eat again. 🙂 To put it simply: "After the party – hair of the dog" – that pretty much sums up the purpose of hair of the dog, the new drink on the Munich market for combating an unpleasant hangover after a boozy night out. Simply put, the fizzy drink created by two young Munich residents – bottled in environmentally friendly reusable bottles – helps you overcome a hangover faster, or even prevents it from occurring with its usual intensity in the first place. How exactly does it work? – Of course, I had it explained to me before trying it… When you consume alcohol, you lose not only water but also electrolytes like magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sodium. This significantly increases your need for vitamin B, which your body should ideally replenish that same night – right after, or even better, during, your night of revelry. Konterbrause (Hangover Fever) is packed with electrolytes and vitamins that effectively combat hangovers. Drinking Konterbrause replenishes the depleted substances in your body, making a large portion of the hangover symptoms disappear.
The whole thing was conceived by two young entrepreneurs – siblings Nico and Judith Janzarik – who invested a lot of time in the right recipe and intensive research to develop the ideal remedy for that unpleasant hangover afterwards. The "counter-effervescent drink" was created after much experimentation, research, and testing and is now available in Munich, in select stores, and of course online. The drink comes with five different labels – the flavor is the same in every bottle, and the different stickers are more of a party gag. Six bottles cost a reasonable €8.70, and twelve bottles are available for €16.50 – perfect for getting through those wilder nights of partying. The taste of Konterbrause (a German energy drink) actually reminded me of a sparkling lemonade with the first sip. To mask or neutralize the salty taste of the electrolytes, the drink contains the flavor of a Southeast Asian fruit – calamansi. The fruity taste comes through immediately and creates a pleasant, refreshing sensation in the mouth. Especially after drinking a bit more alcohol, thirst often sets in quickly – and Konterbrause helps with that too. Otherwise, the drink contains no unnecessary ingredients. So, no hidden or unhealthy substances, no flavor enhancers or artificial flavors – the sin of "alcohol" is enough of a problem in itself. 😉
In summary, "hair of the dog" is definitely a good solution if you've drunk too much once – or even several times – and want to avoid a hangover. Ideally, you should drink it immediately after consuming alcohol. The principle is simple: "The more you party, the more hair of the dog!" or as the brand's slogan suggests: "After the party – hair of the dog!" Ideally, you should enjoy the drink while you're celebrating and drinking alcohol. It also tastes great as a mixed drink, for example with vodka – a kind of "hair of the dog"! If you follow this advice, you'll further prevent electrolyte loss and enhance the effect. However, if you're not even able to spell "hair of the dog" ;-), the drink will still help the next day against unpleasant after-effects and to "refill your internal tank.".
Honestly: Hair of the dog really works. Of course, there are limits to the fun, and if you're completely drunk, there's nothing you can do about it, but it definitely helps noticeably to drink your way through the evening with a hair of the dog. I shared my six-pack with my friends—who are a bit more fond of drinking—and everyone was thrilled with the effect and actually noticed fewer after-effects the next day. The usual feeling after drinking of not wanting to get out of bed, lazing around, and feeling sluggish is significantly reduced, or even completely absent.
