Leander | GOP – Dining at the Munich Variety Theatre – Some of you may still remember my first report about the GOP Variety Theatre on Maximilianstrasse. In a detailed report I previously told you about the then-current show "Stardust"—including a three-course meal. In that post, I already mentioned the food and described each course in detail. Now the time had finally come, and I was able to try Restaurant Leander myself. This time, I was also going to the variety theater for the new stage show "Machine de Circque," but the focus this time is on Restaurant Leander. I want to tell you about my visit and encourage you to stop by.
Before I go into detail, I'd like to highlight the clear advantage of Restaurant Leander: the prices. A three-course set menu costs a very reasonable €31. The starter and dessert are fixed, while you can choose your main course from four different options on the menu; vegetarians are also catered for. It's more than a fair offer, especially – as I now know – considering the quality and exquisite selection of dishes. So, if you're planning a lovely evening for two (or even in a larger group) with a fantastic set menu at an affordable price, then Leander is the perfect choice. If you or your companions prefer to order à la carte, that's also possible at Leander. Main courses outside of a set menu range in price from €21 to €26, which is more in line with Munich's standard prices for main courses in upscale restaurants. However, you'll definitely find a real price advantage when choosing a set menu.
Regarding the restaurant itself: Approximately 20 tables can accommodate up to 60 guests – depending on the table layout and positioning. The restaurant is comfortably furnished, and I felt at ease as soon as I sat down at our pre-reserved table overlooking the entire restaurant. With its subdued lighting, red leather banquettes, dark furniture, and pre-set tables, Leander offers a wonderful ambiance for relaxing. It was relatively quiet when we first arrived, but an hour later all the tables were occupied. Most guests combine a visit to Leander with a subsequent show. That's the intended use, but I would encourage you to experience Leander as a standalone restaurant, separate from a show. Of course, dining and a show together is always a particularly enjoyable experience, but there's nothing wrong with visiting the restaurant independently. Leander can be enjoyed separately, without attending the theater.
Speaking of food: The food, or rather the internationally inspired dishes at Leander, are fantastic. My companion and I were served a three-course surprise menu – one course with meat, one without. Besides a well-stocked bread basket with sunflower and white bread and tomato-pepper cream, we both started with a delicate cauliflower soup with delicious pine nut gnocchi and a tangy foam. I would definitely recommend this! Excellent and very flavorful. Next, we were served salmon with Sicilian pasta and shellfish sauce. The pasta looks like lentils but tastes like fresh pasta and harmonized perfectly with the tender salmon. For the third course, my companion had veal cheeks with creamed polenta on celery sticks with bay leaf sauce, while I had herbed tofu, peas and onions with tomato and potato purée and olive jus. The main courses are generously portioned and very filling. I couldn't quite finish my meal, but I was very satisfied. Afterwards, both of our stomachs were simply too full, and we gladly accepted the friendly waiter's suggestion to have our last course – dessert – at the table during the show's intermission. No sooner said than done – we enjoyed the last course during the intermission of the stage show. The dessert consisted of several different components. Besides a very flavorful pistachio parfait and delicate chocolate mousse, there was plum mousse, vanilla cream, and praline. Absolutely delicious! We couldn't fault our meals, and I would order everything exactly the same way again. My favorites were the soup and salmon, but the dessert selection was also divine. No matter what you choose, chef Axel Tiebel places great emphasis on high-quality, fresh ingredients in all his dishes, and the beautiful presentation and lovingly crafted dishes will leave you wanting more.
You can view the menu with the set menus online and thus get a feel for what you'd like to eat there. I personally almost never go out to eat without checking the menu first. 🙂 Of course, there's also a wine list, and if you'd like, they'll gladly recommend wines to complement your chosen menu. Depending on whether you're going to the GOP Variety Theatre with or without the show, you can enjoy the set menu including the show starting from a reasonable €70. In my opinion, it's an ideal gift. Everyone loves good food, and everyone enjoys watching talented people perform their acts and acts on stage. You can then choose to have your set menu at Leander two hours before or directly after the show.
I highly recommend making a reservation for a visit to Leander. While tables may occasionally become available spontaneously, a reservation guarantees your spot. Even last-minute reservations are possible. The restaurant is easily accessible by public transport, with a tram stop right outside. Alternatively, you can simply stroll along Maximilianstrasse, cross the street, and you'll find yourself at the GOP and Leander. Leander can also be rented for private events with prior arrangement and planning. The restaurant is open from 4:00 PM on all show days. The show "Machine de Cirque" (more hereIn my opinion, it's also worth a visit. However, if you're simply hungry and looking for good food: head to Leander at the GOP Variety Theatre.
