Learn to easily classify food with NUTRI-SCORE – „"Nutri-Score" doesn't ring a bell? – No problem, I was the same way until recently. Now that I've looked into it more closely, I understand the Nutri-Score and find this new food labeling system all the more interesting. I find the whole topic fascinating because a balanced diet and a conscious lifestyle are becoming increasingly important in our fast-paced world. With all the tasks and challenges of everyday life, it's easy to forget to take care of yourself and your body, and to neglect your health. „"Healthy product selection and food" are sometimes lacking. The sheer number of products available in German supermarkets certainly contributes to this. "So many choices, so much to worry about" – so what should you choose when there's so much on offer and you simply want to eat a balanced and healthy diet that meets your own needs? – That's where Nutri-Score comes in!
Learn about and understand the Nutri-Score
Nutri-Score, the food labeling system, was developed to simplify the selection of healthier food options. Keep an eye out for it. From now on, the Nutri-Score logo or system will be printed on the front of many product packages. Its simple color and letter scheme helps you recognize a product's nutritional quality at a glance. If you're thinking, "Oh no! Not another symbol or system that complicates everything when I want to buy groceries," don't worry. Unlike other systems, seals, stamps, tables, and the like, the color-coded system, ranging from dark green to red, and the A to E rating, provides a quick overview and allows for easy comparison of different foods.

Simple and efficient: The Nutri-Score system
Before we delve into the details, let's take a look "behind the scenes." So why use Nutri-Score when it comes to your diet? Firstly, because Nutri-Score was developed by both renowned and independent scientists, and secondly, because it is demonstrably the food labeling system with the most comprehensive scientific basis on the market. No hocus-pocus here. Furthermore, Nutri-Score is always calculated based on the nutritional value of 100 grams per product. This makes it easy to compare foods – individually or within different categories. For me personally, it's also crucial that it's quick and easy to understand. A quick glance is all it takes to see in the supermarket aisle whether the food you're holding meets your own nutritional needs.

This explains what makes Nutri-Score unique…
Also interesting to know: Nutri-Score originated in France. There, the system was introduced in 2017 on a voluntary basis and enjoyed broad acceptance from businesses, consumer associations, and the scientific community. Many French companies followed suit, displaying the Nutri-Score logo on the front of their product packaging, and continue to do so today. Now Germany has followed suit, with companies like Danone, Iglo, and bofrost having opted for the Nutri-Score concept – also voluntarily, of course. Keep an eye out for it when you're shopping. Other EU countries are also in the process of introducing Nutri-Score. So even if you're in a country where you can't read the language on the packaging or the nutritional information, a simple glance at the Nutri-Score logo is all it takes, as the rating system is standardized everywhere.
How was the NUTRI-SCORE created and how is it "calculated"?
Perhaps your first question when considering this topic is how a food product is assigned to a specific category (A/green, B/light green, C/yellow, D/orange, E/red). The calculation involves determining the desirable and less desirable nutrients in a product or food item and then calculating the scores. This results in a total score, which is then assigned to a Nutri-Score color scale from A to E. The result is a set of products that all receive a uniform rating within the Nutri-Score system based on the same calculation method. Depending on the points a food item receives for each nutrient, the total score ranges from -15 to +40 points – this is the scale defined for Nutri-Score. Based on this calculation, the product is then assigned a color and letter (A: -15 to -1 | B: 0 to 2 | C: 3 to 10 | D: 11 to 18 | E: 19 and above). The nutritional quality of a product is therefore recognizable at a glance. Desirable components in these calculations include protein, fiber, fruits, vegetables, and nuts; less desirable components include energy, saturated fat, sugar, and salt. For anyone who wants to know exactly which numbers and values underlie the Nutri-Score calculation system, I would be happy to send you a table and a concrete example calculation using a specific product.
Personal conclusion
I like and find Nutri-Score helpful because it simplifies shopping and provides a good guideline for a balanced diet. The simple color-coded and letter-based rating system helps users identify which products can be enjoyed every day and which should be consumed more slowly or in moderation. Even snacking becomes more manageable; for example, too many E-rated products in your shopping cart easily indicate that you should perhaps add some healthier items (A/B/C products). 😉 Nutri-Score isn't meant to be used for strict diets or to make you feel guilty if the occasional indulgence ends up in your basket. Rather, the system aims to help you achieve a balanced diet simply, easily, independently, and successfully – even without extensive nutritional knowledge.
