Nutrition Day in Munich – „Where does my food come from?“ A question we've all asked ourselves, consciously or unconsciously, right? And if not, then it's high time we did. That was the case for me again recently, and not for the first time, when I was on the train and noticed an advertisement for the Bavarian Nutrition Days. The theme: "Where does my food come from?" The setting: A big festival on June 25, 2017 from 10:00 AM, on which the 5th Bavarian Nutrition Days will be celebrated in Munich. The location: The picturesque courtyard of the State Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forestry (Ludwigstrasse 2) – where else would such an occasion be celebrated?
What can you expect at the Nutrition Day in Munich?
The topics are no less exciting than the location. On June 25th, insights into food production and the value chain will be offered, focusing on "food craftsmanship," regionality, and transparency – more so than current nutrition-related topics. If you're coming with your family, there are also plenty of interesting presentations for them (Overview and registration for the lecturesThe event features hands-on activities (such as KErn exercise bikes, "milking a goat," etc.) and a diverse stage program. The day is packed with informative topics related to nutrition and the motto "Experience Nutrition." This includes nutrition and sensory games, such as an exciting spice or scent memory game, a quiz on regional foods, and a game about sustainability. So, if you've ever wanted to learn more about nutrition, you should definitely take advantage of the Nutrition Day in Munich.
The culinary offerings: tastings, food trucks and more.
But what would a Food Day be without food? Not really good, right? Of course, we've got you covered. On this day, we'll be serving homemade food (such as flour made from grains, chocolate spreads (I'm in! ;-)), sandwiches, Vietnamese spring rolls, and even butter (which you can shake yourself)). I've made butter myself before; it's not that difficult once you know how. So come and learn on June 25th! We'll also be offering a wide variety of cheeses, snacks, special sauces, vinegars, honey, and horseradish. For a proper meal, there will be burgers (both meat and vegetarian) and food trucks ("Der grüne Sepp" – vegetarian/vegan, and "MioMio" with calzones featuring regional fillings and fresh salads). And for those with a sweet tooth, there will be freshly baked waffles, ice cream (Uli von Bocksberg Ice Cream), and coffee and cake. The celebration will be toasted with beer from the Maisach brewery, as well as, of course, non-alcoholic drinks.
Food labeling and traceability
It's also worth mentioning that information on food traceability through labels and seals on regional products is addressed. Here, too, you can learn something new and take home a few "aha!" moments. The topics of "using leftovers" and "healthy eating" also offer a gentle reminder of the importance of self-awareness. That's a good thing! There's always room for improvement, and gaining a better understanding of your own diet and its connections is always beneficial.
3 stations – nutrition day, walks and exhibition
Anyone who can't wait to be part of Nutrition Day in Munich on June 25th is in luck! All you have to do is come to the courtyard of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (near Odeonsplatz) between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM on that day. (Admission is free!) If this sparks your interest in the topic, you can look forward to numerous planned "Nutrition Walks" throughout Bavaria between June 23rd and July 9th. (Fancy a walk?) Learn more here.) As a third option besides the nutrition day in Munich and the walks through Bavaria, a visit to the photo exhibition in the "Man and Nature" Museum is also an option, which, between June 29th and October 22nd, 2017, deals with the theme and motto "Where does my food come from?" in a photo competition.
Children's program on Nutrition Day in Munich
We're not done yet! In addition to the family-friendly activities mentioned above, there are also some special offerings for the little ones. A Slow Food mobile will be on site, where you can cook and bake together with your children and playfully introduce them to the topic of nutrition. At a stand run by "Eat Yourself Clever eV," children can also create their own "lucky rolls" to eat right there. These are just a few of the options. There will also be an apple peeling station, a play bus, a KErn research station, and sensory trails for feeling and tasting. Willi Weitzel (of "Willi Wants to Know!" fame) will also be there with a stage program. A particularly cute idea: children who participate in many activities will collect stamps and receive a kind of "Master Certificate" at the end. A nice touch, isn't it?
I will definitely be there on June 25th, 2017, and anyone who has ever wanted to see me milk a goat, make flour, or whip up a chocolate spread (…and eat it immediately afterwards…) should definitely come along. It's truly a unique and fantastic opportunity to delve a little deeper into the world of nutrition and the question, "Where does my food come from?" Have fun at the Nutrition Day in Munich!
