Rischart am Marienplatz – The new café | 12 different Kaiserschmarrn It's practically impossible not to know Café Rischart on Marienplatz. Located right in the heart of Marienplatz, the café, or rather its main shop, underwent extensive renovations until August 20, 2018. Now, after several months of planning and construction, the café shines in new splendor. Besides a new layout, adorned with high-quality materials and an attractive interior, as well as a welcoming daytime bar, the extensive menu is also a delight. The highlight: 12 different varieties of Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake).

The café is on the first floor.

Upon entering the 750 m² Café Rischart on Marienplatz, it's immediately apparent that much has changed. The layout is more open; the space is cleverly divided into a self-service area, bakery counter, daytime bar, and café upstairs; and the 135-year company history is integrated into the interior design. This is evident in the numerous black-and-white photographs that adorn the walls, evoking the beginnings of Max Rischart's Backhaus KG. During the renovation, the values of quality, baking artistry, enjoyment, and, of course, a connection to the region were always paramount – above all, ensuring that guests continue to feel comfortable whenever they visit Rischart on Marienplatz, both regulars and newcomers.

An eye-catcher and a new after-work hotspot: the new daytime bar with a lounge area and fantastic views of St. Peter's Church. Besides light meals, drinks (such as Aperol Spritz, Raspberry Spritz, Gin and Tonics, etc.) create ideal after-work moments. Guests can simply pick up bread for dinner at home directly from the counter—designed with curved granite forms—of the bakery located below the daytime bar. The café upstairs surprises with several new features. Since the beginning of June this year, the café has been completely renovated and gutted—both the aforementioned retail space on the ground floor and the café itself. The staircase to the upper floor (café) is now located further inside the building, and in place of the old staircase, guests will find a self-service area. Snacks and drinks, which can be paid for with a scanner, await you there if you're in a hurry. Also new is a shop entrance at the rear of the building, accessible from St. Peter's Church. If you go to Rischart at Marienplatz, you will automatically pass through the small daytime bar and terrace.

The small, cozy daytime bar

Upon arriving at the café, you will be seated by Rischart staff. This is a change from the previous system, but it helps with finding a seat quickly, which isn't always easy despite the 200 available seats. The café has always been very popular and, after its significant upgrade and brighter, more welcoming atmosphere, is attracting even more patrons and café enthusiasts. The new café manages to appeal to a wide range of customers, from young to old, with its various differently designed zones. The menu includes everything from breakfast to tarte flambée and pastries, as well as cakes of all kinds, including the new and much-expanded selection of Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes). Hot meals are also available in the restaurant/café area. Still a special gem, now with only a minor facelift, is the Biedermeier Room, also located on the first floor, furnished with pieces and memorabilia from Rischart's early days and founding era.

My favorite: The Kaiserschmarrn „Mediterranean“

New Kaiserschmarrn variations

So, if you don't like Kaiserschmarrn, you can stop reading now; I assume you'll all continue. 🙂 My heart really skipped a beat, especially when I saw the page with the 12 different Kaiserschmarrn varieties in a wide range of flavors – seven of which are new. If you – as is typical for a Kaiserschmarrn fan – prefer something sweet, you might be excited about the new Black Forest Cherry or Yeast Dumpling Kaiserschmarrn. If you're in the mood for something savory, Rischart at Marienplatz has the perfect answer for you too. There's an oriental version with spicy hummus, black sesame seeds, and mint, as well as a Mediterranean alternative with goat cheese, caramelized walnuts, and red onion dip. I tried all three of these, as well as the "Alsace" Kaiserschmarrn with bacon, spring onions, and herbed sour cream dip. My absolute favorite – besides the classic with raisins and applesauce – was the "Mediterranean" version with goat cheese. Incredibly delicious and a very surprising flavor, because the base isn't a (typical) sweet batter, but a Kaiserschmarrn batter without sugar. This makes the version (…or any savory variety…) a truly special taste experience.

The cozy Biedermeier room (1st floor)

I can only recommend that you be a little adventurous and try something new. To be clear: at first, you might wonder how a Kaiserschmarrn with bacon, hummus, or even goat cheese could taste and still resemble a Kaiserschmarrn. But Rischart proves that it's entirely possible with their incredibly creative and daring variations. The classic version costs €9.20; at €12.80, the savory "Sesame Hummus" and "Mediterranean" varieties are the most expensive.

Conclusion

Be sure to take a closer look next time you're passing by Rischart on Marienplatz. The 24,000 diamond-shaped oak shingles on the walls and ceilings, which skillfully connect the two floors, are worth a visit in themselves. In this "new" café, you can feel the connection to Bavaria, to the local region, and experience – in my opinion – a new kind of coziness and conviviality. Since the Kaiserschmarrn also won me over, I'll certainly be a frequent visitor to Marienplatz – whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Which Kaiserschmarrn will be your first choice? If you're looking for something completely different, that's no problem either, because the new map, The improvements that come with the renovation are quite impressive.
