schuhbecks-teatro-gourmetmenue-mit-show-logoSchuhbeck's teatro | Gourmet menu with stage show in Munich – I probably don't need to introduce Alfons Schuhbeck himself. Nor do I need to introduce his culinary skills and the associated gastronomic delights. Just recently – at the end of December 2016 – the renowned professional, celebrity, and TV chef opened a new culinary oasis in Munich: "Schuhbecks Fine Dining im Boettners." (I'll report on that soon...) Today, I'd like to introduce you to the well-known and incredibly popular "Schuhbecks teatro" in the Spiegeltent. The program started last October (2016) and will run until April 2, 2017.

Part of the evening at Schubecks teatro is an extensive multi-course meal – prepared by Alfons Schuhbeck and his kitchen team – as well as a glamorous show in the equally glamorous Spiegeltent, complete with elegantly set tables. The setting alone is undoubtedly captivating. Those who dislike crowds, large groups, and potentially jostling among strangers should probably not arrive too early, as the bar and foyer area can get quite busy (opening 90 minutes before the show). Once seated at a table – we were at a long, narrow table for six – a cozy atmosphere quickly develops. As soon as the show begins, all eyes and attention are drawn to the small, centrally located stage in the tent. The acts begin, and until the very end – at least for me – I was amazed not only by the sheer delight of the performance itself, but also by the relatively small space in which the professionals manage to execute such a diverse range of skills.

Pink roasted venison loin

The menu and stage show at Schuhbeck's teatro

The highlight of the evening for me was undoubtedly the menu. It began with "Vitello Forello," veal loin rolls filled with trout mousse on tuna sauce and vegetable salad. A visually and gastronomically successful start, in my opinion, that whetted the appetite for more and the following courses. Of course, at a table where Alfons Schuhbeck himself is responsible for the plating, one has a different expectation than in many other restaurants: I was hoping for perfect flavor and an ideal balance of ingredients and their combinations, and I wasn't disappointed. Between each course, the show and stage program were interspersed throughout. A (digestive) break was ensured after each course, during which the cooking continued and an artist, performer, and/or singer presented their act. This way, one neither grew tired of the show too quickly nor felt full too soon. A perfectly timed experience.

Truffled chestnut soup

The truffled chestnut soup served next, with vanilla polenta, wild mushroom ravioli, and a crispy pancetta chip, was plentiful and had an intense, yet not overpowering, chestnut flavor. I felt that the wild mushroom ravioli's flavor was somewhat overshadowed by the intensity of the soup itself, but I still finished my companion's bowl. Unfortunately, our entire table agreed that we couldn't detect any vanilla in the polenta, but overall, the soup was a successful course. My favorite, after another impressive presentation, was the pink-roasted venison loin with port-soaked cherries, bread dumplings, and glazed pumpkin. While the main course was relatively simply presented (not that this affected the taste, but I honestly expected a bit more visual flair), there was nothing to criticize in terms of flavor. The venison was incredibly tender, a good portion, and delicious. In general, I really appreciate that at Schuhbecks teatro, even after the final course (dessert "Sweet Dreams" – Bavarian cream with chocolate panna cotta in a raspberry coating with wild berries and mango-chili ice cream on yogurt-oat crumble), you don't leave feeling uncomfortably full. The portions are ample, neither too small nor too large, and thus all the senses are pleasantly satisfied. Vegetarians also have the option of being served a separate menu on-site: terrine of Mediterranean vegetables with tomato-basil pesto and a small salad, truffled chestnut soup with vanilla polenta and wild mushroom ravioli, ricotta-spinach dumplings on glazed pumpkin vegetables, and the dessert is identical.

The show itself is entertaining and varied. For example, anyone who enjoys going to the GOP (…I've heard about it several times) Events at the GOP Anyone who enjoys (as reported…) or other acrobatic and stage shows will also like the program at Schuhbecks teatro. Tightrope walking, feats of strength, muscular artists, and attractive women in a variety of outfits, along with a diverse musical program, await you. As mentioned, there are always breaks for meals.

The dessert

My personal conclusion

All in all, I think Schuhbeck's teatro is fantastic and I can recommend it to anyone who enjoys good food and a show in between. The focus, in my opinion, should clearly be on the culinary experience. It's the interplay between the show and the menu that makes the event unique. The fact that Alfons Schuhbeck himself comes on stage at the end, thanks the guests in the tent, and sings some wonderful songs – surrounded by the kitchen and show team – contributes to a well-rounded and successful evening. Since pictures speak louder than words, I recommend clicking through the photo gallery. This will help you decide if the event is right for you. I definitely wouldn't recommend it for teenagers under 16-18 years old, but since it's not too loud in the tent, it should also be suitable for older people. Of course, a certain appreciation for culinary events is a must.

Hard facts

Schuhbeck's teatro starts at 7:00 PM Monday through Friday, and at 6:00 PM on Sundays and public holidays. You can access the tent foyer and bar 90 minutes before the show. The program lasts approximately 3.5 hours. Parking is available directly in front of the tent, and you can also find parking on side streets with a little searching. The Spiegeltent and show are easily accessible by public transport via subway line 2 (Messestadt West station) and a short walk. Upon arrival, you will be asked for your name at the entrance, or you can present your tickets/voucher, and then you're ready to go. Tickets are divided into different categories (Deluxe, Platinum, Gold, or vouchers) and range in price from €54 to €241, depending on the day of the week and the occasion. You can also reserve "city tables," "mountain tables" (for five to twelve people), "romantic tables" (for two people), or boxes. Tickets can be booked online at [website address missing in original text]. Website At Schuhbeck's teatro, you'll find everything you need to know about making a reservation and about the show. I should also mention that, depending on your seating, you might be seated relatively close together. It won't be too close or uncomfortable, but keep this in mind when making your reservation, depending on the occasion. Enjoy!
