What can you expect at the Sportalm at Munich Airport?
I almost yodeled when I left the Sportalm at Munich Airport after a two-hour layover – I was so satisfied. In my opinion, they couldn't have created a more fitting name or a more – yes, you could definitely say it – cozy hotspot at Munich Airport. So, the Sportalm is not only the last place I visited on my "Bianca's Tasty Tour" at the airport, but also clearly one of my favorites. A bittersweet feeling, then. The Sportalm, with its natural cuisine, is easy to find, as it's directly visible from the MAC Forum and accessible via the terminal road. They offer quite a lot: ambiance, atmosphere, a cozy ambiance, and good food. You can expect Bavarian natural cuisine in the form of fresh salads, breakfast creations, pasta dishes, and Bavarian classics.
Furnishings, ambiance and surroundings
I didn't quite get the feeling of "entering" the restaurant, which is made up of lots of glass, wood, and seams, with its alpine flair. Everything is very open, bright, and welcoming. One of the first things my companion said to me after we arrived was, "Cozy!" And it's true. Every corner is different, and from the snug deck chair with its fur throw, to sturdy wooden tables with bar stools or simple seating areas, to the ski lift gondola with its furnished dining table, the Sportalm leaves nothing to be desired. But you should really get comfortable and relax after you've chosen your food or ordered at the counter. The best place to browse, choose, and be inspired is at the equally open, bright, and inviting counter and ordering area. Adjacent to this is the Almbar for coffee and hot drinks, aperitifs, and the like, and separate from that is a section with fresh orange juice, Skiwasser (a local soft drink), or a soup station built on an old stove with a fresh soup of the day. First off, the layout is absolutely ideal, making you want to choose something and linger. Something that might not be immediately obvious: the terrace. It's located above the building, or rather on the roof of the Sportalm, and offers not only an additional Sportalm kiosk but also plenty of other sunny seating with an unobstructed view of the MAC Forum. Keep an eye out for it next time. Okay, now let's get down to business…
Offer, selection and evaluation of the food at the Sportalm
The Sportalm menu comes in two versions: a printed, tactile version and a digital version displayed on screens above the order counter. It's very simple: queue up, choose your items, order, wait a moment, and take your food to your reserved table – that's it. For those who prefer a more relaxed approach, there's a square, branded wooden menu available, offering options such as "Soups," "Bavarian Delicacies," "Sweet Treats," "Pasta Specialties," or "Salad Bar." The digital screens also feature specialty items like the "Watzmann," a burger patty with pulled pork, lettuce, tomato, fried onions, and herbs, optionally topped with avocado. (I ordered it! – A must!) Okay then… you decide what you'd like to drink and eat. You can help yourself to the fresh orange juice machine, pour a glass of sparkling water, or even try a portion of fresh soup of the day (currently goulash soup for €5.90, or with a bread roll for €6.40). If you're in the mood for pasta, you can choose from three different types of pasta or Maultaschen (Swabian ravioli), combined with four different sauces (tomato, Bolognese, pesto, or cheese) and topped with beef, chicken, or shrimp, starting at €9.90. For the salad lovers among you, the same principle applies: you can create your own salad (also starting at €9.90). The salad will be prepared for you and freshly shaken with your chosen dressing. Since the ingredients are super fresh, everything tastes like it's just been picked from the field. For those who aren't keen on creating their own dishes – whether salad or pasta – there are three pre-made combinations available. For example, the salads include the "Mountain Lake" salad with mixed alpine greens, a grilled shrimp skewer, warm Ebli rice, a delicate elderflower dressing, cress, and sprouts (€12.40). My companion was looking forward to a plate of fresh pasta and chose the "Nature Lover" (€10.90), a set dish consisting of filled pasta pockets with cream cheese and spinach, a creamy mountain cheese sauce, wild herbs, and roasted mountain nuts.
Since my companion and I were on a testing mission and wanted to get as comprehensive an impression of the Sportalm as possible, we ordered one of the breakfasts also on the menu. Breakfast is offered daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and we immediately opted for the "Senner Breakfast." My companion jokingly remarked after we received our breakfast that it looked a bit like a Bavarian breakfast doner kebab. 😉 Take a look at the gallery to see the exceptionally fresh and visually and tastefully delicious example. 😉 Plenty of bacon and egg, tomato, and lettuce were nestled between the bread slices. The bread was crispy but not too crunchy, and a small bowl of apple and carrot salad was served as a side dish. Very well done.
So we had a "small" breakfast, very reasonably portioned and quite filling on its own, a "Mountain Lake" salad, a portion of "Nature Lover" pasta, and – of course! – the Watzmann cheese I've already mentioned. For dessert, we opted against the muffins on display and chose the "Hüttenschmarrn" – a Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake) with apple compote (€8.50) and a cappuccino. Everything was absolutely delicious, I tell you, and I can confidently say that I've rarely eaten as well at an airport as I did at the Sportalm. This is certainly due in part to their "natural cuisine" concept, the consistently fresh and carefully selected ingredients, and the many small details that make the Sportalm such a well-rounded experience. My favorites were the salad with shrimp and the Watzmann cheese "to go." Both are perennial favorites at the Sportalm and representative of the quality, variety, and appealing presentation of their entire menu.
Key facts and conclusion
The Sportalm is open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and the kiosk on the terrace is open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The entire menu is also available to go, and card payments are accepted. The restaurant seats approximately 260 people, and the terrace can accommodate another 50. The different seating areas create a unique atmosphere in each section. I felt very comfortable and even took a stroll out onto the terrace. A truly charming spot! Thanks to its central location within the terminal road, the Sportalm is just a stone's throw away once you arrive at the airport. Another convenient feature: the P20 parking garage, where you can park for free with a minimum spend of €20 at Munich Airport, is just a one-minute walk away. The ambiance is impressive across the board, and the food is excellent too: Thumbs up! Since the Sportalm isn't located beyond security, everyone can go there, and I highly recommend stopping by if you're hungry or thirsty. Whether for breakfast, a quick snack, or a relaxing salad in a furry deck chair, the Sportalm is my new airport highlight!
