Streetwine 1.0 A new trend is taking Munich by storm: street wine. As previously announced, the Street Wine 1.0 wine tasting event took place on March 25th from afternoon until evening in the TonHalle of Munich's Kultfabrik. The organizer is... Culinariu Bavaricum, ...who have made a name for themselves in Munich with events and tastings centered around wine. I was, of course, present at Streetwine 1.0 and wanted to share my experience with you. Perhaps some of you were there too. In my opinion, it was definitely worth the trip, as numerous delicious wines from renowned winemakers were presented. Naturally, all the wines offered were available for tasting, and there was ample opportunity to ask questions about the wine.
The event itself featured 80 winemakers showcasing their finest wines from Austria's Weinviertel and Mittelburgenland regions. These included renowned winemakers as well as newcomers and promising young producers from these two Austrian wine regions. There, I was able to learn more about the origins of the different grape varieties, winemakers, and vineyards. The Weinviertel, located near Vienna, primarily provides wine lovers with Grüner Veltliner (which I personally love), a grape known as "Gruner" in New York's nightlife and club scene, where it enjoyed immense popularity and still holds a special place among the Big Apple's trendsetters. On the border with Hungary, where the sun shines particularly frequently and intensely in eastern Austria, Mittelburgenland's wines have a distinct advantage: They produce first-class Blaufränkisch wines that not only delight the palate but also soothe the soul.
What made the Streetwine 1.0 event special were the six different WineWalks, which allowed participants to taste and sample a wide variety of wines and, of course, take their favorite home. In total, over 300 different wines were offered at the Streetwine 1.0 event. To ensure the wine didn't go straight to your head, the Nachtkantine, also located in the art park, offered homemade street food perfectly complementing the street wine.
But why am I telling you all this? Quite simply! Because the idea behind Streetwine 1.0 convinced me from the very beginning. Inspired by the ever-growing popularity of street food, some creative minds at the agency Culinarium Bavaricum came up with something clever: Streetwine. Since well-made and varied street food is becoming increasingly popular, and delicacies served fresh from food trucks at street festivals are gaining more and more traction, this should now be easily possible with a variety of delicious yet affordable wines. You might be thinking: What? Wine? That only really goes with beer in this kind of setting! But beer, like me, isn't for everyone and doesn't always go with every meal.
Streetwine aims to show that wine can also be enjoyed with simple dishes, in casual gatherings, and during casual conversations with friends on the street. Too often, wine is considered a rather "cerebral" thing, and many people—simply because of its reputation—don't dare to really approach this liquid delight, at least not when it comes to choosing the right wine for different dishes or even entire menus. Streetwine, however, tries to break this perception and takes a proactive approach with the core idea: "You don't have to understand wine, you just have to drink it." Certainly a tough statement for true wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts, but it only reinforces the fundamental idea and the original concept of Streetwine 1.0. That's why I also embraced the motto and thought: "Just try everything and drink what I like." It worked quite well, and I, too, discovered some new culinary delights. 🙂
But now I'd like to briefly return to the individual Street Wine Walks, which I've already touched upon. Anyone who attended the event will, of course, already be familiar with the concept: six different themes, each featuring a completely different wine. So, if you enjoy grilling with friends and family on the banks of the Isar River or on your own balcony in the summer, you'll find the perfect drop to match the mood on the "Wines in the Sun" route – when you're looking for something other than a case of Augustiner or the usual Hugo for a toast. At the start of the tours/walks, there was a map showing the respective routes and wine vendors. With the map in hand, I could then follow the route that appealed to me most and hop from one winemaker to the next. (I slowed down a bit from route to route… :-)) All the winemakers present at the event were exceptionally nice, friendly, and open to answering questions from wine enthusiasts, both collectively and individually. They were happy to share their expertise, answer all questions about the wine, the production process, and the origin of the individual wines, and poured the wines.
Now for the crucial part – also for all of you who couldn't make it to the event. Of course, every wine that was served could and still can be purchased or ordered directly from the respective winemaker. And that's where you come in. 😉 If you missed the event, the (wine) door isn't closed to you just yet. You can take a closer look at the wines on offer using the attached wine walking map, get an overview of which winemakers were present, and which wines were available.
The various walks were titled "Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday – Affordable and Delicious," "Best of Gruner – From Isar Wine to Premium," "Wines in the Sun – Fresh & Crisp," "Party with Friends – Uncomplicated & Lively," "Dinner for Two – Top Class for a Special Evening," and "Gifts – For Your Father-in-Law or Boss." As you can see, everything imaginable related to wine was covered.
The message of Streetwine 1.0 is crystal clear: wine isn't elitist. Good wine is fun, perfect with good food or even the ideal dinner, and you won't have a headache the next day. I immediately bought a few bottles to take home. If you missed the opportunity to stock up in person, you can also order directly from the individual winemakers.
