Champor stands for authentic Malaysian cuisine – unique in Munich!

CHAMPOR – Germany's first Malaysian restaurant || Attention, here's a very special tip for you! A definite "must" for every foodie, gourmet, and those of you who like to find authenticity paired with variety on your plate when dining out.

We are going out for Malaysian food and visiting the "Champor" restaurant, which has been based in Munich for 19 years – the first restaurant for authentic Malaysian cuisine in Germany and still the only one of its kind in Munich. After my companion and I visited, I can wholeheartedly recommend coming along and experiencing a very special restaurant visit – holiday feeling included.

Get to know the CHAMPOR

Opened in 2004 by Kiren Kumari Alt-Amrik Singh, originally from Malaysia, Champor is located in Denning-Bogenhausen. It was born out of a desire to relive fond memories of her homeland and bring authentic Malaysian food to the people, introducing them to Malaysian cuisine. To this day – for 19 years – Champor remains Munich's only restaurant serving Malaysian cuisine, with the name "Champor" representing the "mixture and diversity" of Malaysia – a place where the most varied ethnic groups come together.

During your visit, try different appetizers from the menu.

The Champor features a comfortably designed interior as well as a partially covered and spacious outdoor area for warmer days.

As a guest of the restaurant, you'll receive a warm and personal welcome – usually from Kiren herself, who, by the way, brought all the recipes for the dishes you can order at Champor directly from Malaysia. These closely guarded recipes come exclusively from Kiren's homeland, specifically from her grandmother's cookbook, her Malaysian neighbor's cookbook, her own childhood visits to various places in Penang, and also from her former nanny – now 91 years old and still a valuable source and "teacher" for Kiren when it comes to new recipes from Malaysia. It doesn't get much more authentic than that, does it? 🙂

Some of the recipes prepared for you as a guest at Champor are so "old" and traditional that they are no longer available today, or even appear in "modern" cookbooks and kitchens. Kiren aptly describes her restaurant Champor as "the place where she feels closest to home." No wonder, with such fantastic cuisine!

Everything you order at Champor is freshly prepared, authentically flavorful, and attractively presented – some dishes intentionally in a street food style. In fact, Malaysian cuisine is generally meant to be shared, so all the dishes are served in the center of the table for you to share and sample. Time for a look at the menu.

A look at the menu at Champor

The eye eats too: besides freshness, an appealing presentation also plays a major role in Champor.

Champor's menu is intentionally small, but without excluding any particular tastes, dietary needs, or personal preferences. Why? – To ensure that all dishes are prepared fresh and à la minute. This means that it's possible certain fresh ingredients may be unavailable, and you might have to choose an alternative dish. Freshness and authenticity are our priorities.

But no matter what you're in the mood for during your visit, you'll notice the attention to detail right from the start, from the very first choice of dishes. For example, all the sauces served with the various dishes are not only authentically Malaysian, but also homemade and offer a wide range of flavors. I particularly appreciate that, in addition to the Malaysian focus, the restaurant prioritizes regional ingredients. The chicken and duck, for instance, come from the local free-range poultry farm Gerlmaier in Forsten, and the high-quality seafood and delicacies are also sourced from the region.

One point that's particularly important to me when enjoying international cuisine: The food and recipes at Champor aren't Europeanized, as is so often the case with Asian restaurants. At Champor, everything tastes just like it did on your Malaysian holiday, or will taste if your visit inspires you to spend your vacation there. 🙂

Everything I tried during my visit was delicious. I highly recommend the "Chili Garlic Duck," the delicate "Butter Prawns," the creamy "Chicken Curry on the Bone with Sticky Rice," and the "Vegetable and Tofu Sodhi." Don't skip the appetizers, though, and come hungry, because they're a great way to experience the diverse and multifaceted flavors of Malaysian cuisine. When asked, the friendly Kiren described her restaurant as follows: "At Champor, my team and I place great importance on authentic and fresh cuisine. We want our guests to feel comfortable and enjoy excellent food. Every guest is warmly welcomed, and we look forward to introducing them to the complex world of Malaysian cuisine every single day!"„

Also worth mentioning, and underscoring the authenticity: spicy in Champor really means spicy – just like in Malaysia. However, there's also plenty of choice for those of you who absolutely don't like spicy food, for example tamarind duck or prawns. complete menu You can find it on the Champor website.

If you get hungry at lunchtime and fancy some Malaysian cuisine, Champor is the perfect place for you. A small lunch menu with homemade dishes, reminiscent of "coming home to a freshly cooked meal prepared by your parents," awaits you there. (Also available online via the website).

Ask for "Musang" during your visit – the signature cocktail mix drink at Champor.

Suitable in the glass

Champor not only serves delicious food on plates (some of which come from Malaysia, served on banana leaves), but also drinks. Enjoy a variety of wines, long drinks, cocktails, and great mixed drinks – they're happy to give recommendations.

The most prestigious and flagship drink on the menu is undoubtedly Kiren's own creation, "Musang." Musang is an exotic, carbonated cocktail-beer mix (50 parts alcohol-free Mai Tai / 50 parts beer with lime juice concentrate) that she dedicated to her father and which perfectly complements the Malaysian cuisine. I'm already looking forward to trying it on my next visit and learning more about the fascinating story behind it. (More to come…)

Mmmmh! Malaysian crepes.

Useful information about other aspects: dining/celebrating as a group, making reservations, etc.

As mentioned in detail before: A visit to Champor is a must! Whether you're a couple, traveling solo, or in a larger group, a visit is highly recommended. For groups of eight or more, Kiren and her friendly kitchen and service team will serve you fantastic Malaysian menus consisting of diverse, perfectly coordinated courses that authentically and creatively showcase the richness of Malaysia.

Another plus is the wonderfully unpretentious atmosphere and relaxed setting. It's cozy and inviting, but not overdone or pretentious. At Champor, you'll be perfectly at ease whether you're wearing a blazer and shirt or jeans and casual evening wear. What's far more important to Kiren is hospitality and personal contact with her guests. This is also why you can't book your table at Champor through one of the usual reservation platforms. At Champor, your restaurant visit, and thus your journey to Malaysia, begins with the first personal contact and your table reservation over the phone. Thumbs up for that too!

I wish you lots of fun in Champor and I'm really excited to see what you'll experience!
