Advance notice: „WINE MAILINGS“ on December 16, 2018 at the Mural Restaurant – Time flies. The first "Wine Dinner" hosted by Mastercard Priceless Munich took place in January 2018, and for the first time, guests were invited to "take a seat for a fantastic menu with perfectly paired wines." That was almost a year ago, and since then, ten very different and uniquely interpreted dinner evenings have taken place (there was no Wine Dinner in September 2018). Now, for the eleventh and final Wine Dinner of 2018, on December 16, 2018, the event will be held at the Mural Restaurant in the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art in Munich's Old Town.

A little taste of what's to come at Mural

The Mural restaurant in Munich

The grand finale of the "Weinmahleins" event series in 2018 takes place in December at Mural, a restaurant that combines street art and fine dining. Located within the MUCA (Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art), which opened two years ago, Mural impresses not only with its excellent cuisine but also with its unique ambiance. The restaurant is housed in a former municipal electrical substation, adorned with sophisticated graffiti, illustrations, and paintings. Street art is everywhere you look. What makes it special is that, just as the artworks themselves are constantly evolving, so too is the restaurant Mural itself – the cuisine adapts to the art, and the restaurant's name is derived from the building's concept. "Mural" is a common term in the street art scene for large-scale murals. With its simultaneously unconventional and minimalist furnishings and modern interior, Mural creates a harmonious setting for relaxed and comfortable dining experiences. Guests can expect attractively presented dishes on their plates, featuring regionally sourced products. The focus here is on collaborating with small and smaller producers.

The young kitchen crew at Mural: Joshua Leise and Johannes Maria Kneip

A glimpse behind the scenes, or rather into the kitchen, introduces the young culinary team (Joshua Leise and Johannes Maria Kneip – both just 23 years old and former apprentices at the Sylt-based "Söl'ring Hof"), whom owners Moritz Meyn and Wolfgang Hingerl (known for the "Kopper Bar" and the "Mynah Bar") have brought on board. Young chef Johannes Maria Kneip already spent a year at the two-Michelin-starred restaurant Facil in Berlin; Joshua Leise at the three-Michelin-starred Atelier in Munich. A glance at the restaurant's regular menu reveals a variety of lunch dishes, while in the evening, guests can expect five to seven courses presented as sophisticated fine dining menus. I'm particularly looking forward to this wine tasting, not only because of the interesting team in the kitchen and the special ambiance, but also because I've been wanting to try one of the menus for a long time.

The winemaker of the evening, Johann Trapl

Wine dinner December 2018

On the evening of December 16th, an exclusive five-course menu with perfectly paired wines awaits you (and me ;-)) as participants of the event. Water and coffee are included in the price of €99 per person. So far, the wines have been generously poured at every wine-pairing dinner, and refills are gladly offered upon request, depending on the course and availability. I was given a sneak peek at the menu specially curated by Leise and Kneip. Contributing to the selection of the perfect wines was winemaker Johann Trapl from the Trapl Winery in Carnuntum, Lower Austria.

Course 1: "Arctic char, parsley, egg yolk, mustard"; followed by course 2 with "pumpkin, wild mushrooms, pumpernickel." The creative journey continues with "pork, nettle, parsnip" (course 3) and "corn-fed chicken, kohlrabi, juniper, bacon" (course 4). Course 5, a creative dessert, reveals the delicious combination of "oats, sea buckthorn, and white chocolate." No further details were revealed, deliberately stimulating the guest's imagination. The wines are equally diverse and exceptional. Trapl, with his winery in Carnuntum, is a true luminary. His wines feature the region's typical varieties: Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and St. Laurent. The Trapl vineyards are cultivated biodynamically, and all wines are spontaneously fermented and bottled without additives or fining. From the reserve wines onwards, the grapes are gently crushed by foot, which extracts the tannins even more gently and doesn't damage the seeds. On the evening of December 16th, starting at 6:30 pm, we have the wonderful opportunity to get to know the kitchen, the team, the chefs, and winemaker Johannes Trapl.

Hard facts

Those wishing to secure one of the limited spots at Weinmahleins can reserve a place in advance, along with their guest(s) (see below for details). My previous announcements and reports on past events offer insights into the origins and development of Weinmahleins. January to November 2018.I'm really looking forward to it and will certainly use the evening to review the entire Weinmahleins year.
