Viamala is a rather stylishly designed restaurant in Lindau on Lake Constance, with a direct lake view, friendly staff, and good food. It's rather difficult to get here without a car.
The Viamala is directly adjacent to the Lindau casino, is located right on the lake and offers a large outdoor area with large "beach chairs" and a large terrace with seating areas and parasols, where you can relax wonderfully in the sunshine and with a view of the beautiful Lake Constance.
On our first visit – we've been there three times since – we were incredibly lucky that the sun was shining and we found a spot in one of the popular beach chairs. (These can't be reserved, as we tried to do on our second visit.) We sat down and were immediately attended to by one of the smartly dressed waiters. The Viamala menu offers a good mix: appetizers (e.g., tomato carpaccio, caprese, prosciutto, arugula salad), vegetarian dishes (vegetarian dumplings or baked potato filled with spinach), mixed "summer dishes" (duck breast, scampi, beef carpaccio, etc.), soups (e.g., lobster bisque, fish soup, tomato cream soup), pasta, fish (salmon fillet, fish platter, lobster ragout, whitefish fillet), children's dishes, various main courses (e.g., lamb ragout, boiled beef, mixed grill, Wiener Schnitzel, pork fillet medallions, involtini, etc.), desserts, and also various set menus for 18 euros.
We ordered the pike-perch fillet with potatoes (€17) and the spaghetti with arugula and cherry tomatoes (€12). Both were delicious – perhaps the stunning view from my beach chair overlooking the beautiful blue Lake Constance in the sunshine, accompanied by birdsong, also played a part ;-). The fish was tender and, together with the potatoes, which still had a nice bite, a generous portion. The pasta was also delicious and ample. Overall, the portions have been both ample and delicious on every visit. Our second visit, again choosing fish, was no disappointment either. (See photos). Fresh, delicious fish, plenty of side dishes, and a great view with a tasty white wine. (I can't remember which wine, I'm not a connoisseur...).
The Viamala's ambiance is both cozy and chic: dark tables, black upholstered chairs and benches, candles and beautifully folded napkins on the tables, subtle lighting, and understated decorative elements. At the front, some tables right by the glass facade offer a fantastic view of the lake. At the back of the restaurant, there's an additional room with about 12 tables, heavy curtains, and equally comfortable seating. (It gets very warm in summer!).
All in all, a visit to Viamala is definitely worthwhile. The ice cream/sundaes are truly indulgent in the summer. Delicious served with fresh fruit – perfect for relaxing and enjoying yourself by Lake Constance. If you don't fancy ice cream for dessert, you can choose from other delicious options. On our last visit, we paid €54 for two main courses and two drinks. Card payments are accepted. You can work off those extra calories afterward with a short stroll along the beautiful lakeside promenade. Go and try it out! I've never been there in winter – I'm sure it's lovely then too.
I'll be back: Yes, if I feel like driving for a good two hours for good food and a great view.
