Hungry Heart We tried the "Hungry Heart" restaurant last weekend. Unfortunately, it wasn't a great experience for our first visit. However, we must say that we returned for breakfast and were very satisfied. On our first visit, things started off badly because, despite the website stating otherwise, it wasn't possible to make a reservation by phone. After about four or five attempts, the phone went to answering machine, which doesn't seem very well thought out for a restaurant that generally accepts phone reservations.
So we took a chance and drove there – the "Hungry Heart" is located right by the Fraunhoferstraße subway entrance – and managed to get a small table for two. The restaurant's first impression was pleasant and welcoming, with about 15 tables of varying sizes with chairs, some with long benches, cozy seating areas on the windowsills, large wooden tables for comfortable seating, and wine racks along the walls. We took a seat on a large, upholstered windowsill and were handed the menus relatively quickly by a friendly server.
The menu is relatively concise and very clearly laid out, divided into appetizers, main courses, and desserts. Apart from the breakfast menu, it's limited to one page, which I generally liked. (For example, Käsespätzle, vegetable quiche – both of which we ordered – penne with beef strips, salads, soups, etc.) The menu also listed Fritz-Kola lemonade in various flavors, but unfortunately, two of the flavors we wanted were unavailable, which I don't consider a good thing for a relatively new, small, and manageable restaurant. Additionally, there are boards on the walls displaying business lunch specials and two or three extra dishes that change regularly and aren't on the regular menu.
Well… the food arrived relatively quickly, was brought by one of the numerous, friendly servers, and looked "acceptable," but not exactly "appetizing." The Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle) tasted quite good—after adding more salt—and pretty much as you'd expect them to. The vegetable quiche wasn't exactly a feast for the eyes, and as I discovered, it wasn't a real culinary delight either. Unfortunately, a small salad was placed next to the quiche, which was swimming in dressing and soaked through the entire bottom of the quiche. In other words, my meal was more of a pile of vegetables with soggy bits of pastry. The vegetables themselves were okay, but had a rather bland and strange taste. I managed to finish it, adding salt several times, but afterwards I was annoyed that I'd spent €8 on it. The Käsespätzle, at €10, were reasonably priced, but not exactly cheap, as you can get them much cheaper in other Bavarian restaurants.
Unfortunately, it must also be noted that the waitress appeared at our table while we were eating and asked to collect our payment, as her shift was about to change. While I've certainly experienced this in restaurants before, it still doesn't demonstrate genuine hospitality – we had only just started eating – and interrupted our conversation and our meal.
On another visit over the weekend with my companion, we decided to have breakfast at Hungriges Herz (Hungry Heart) and thus give the restaurant a second chance. We ordered the "Allgäuer Herz" (Allgäu Heart) breakfast (€8.90) and the "Fittes Herz" (Fit Heart) breakfast (€8.50), accompanied by two delicious latte macchiatos (€3.40 each), a Diet Coke (€3.60, 0.4l), and a cappuccino (€2.90). There was nothing to complain about with either breakfast; both were ample, tasty, nicely presented, and filling.
All in all, the Hungry Heart is a nice place to sit, chat, and spend a few pleasant hours – I won't be ordering main courses there again for a while, but breakfast is definitely no problem. The ambiance and service are also good.
